Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. This LGBT collection of interviews is stored within the Cork Folklore Project permanent oral history archive run in conjunction with UCC’s Folklore and Ethnology Department and Northside Community Enterprises, with both a physical and digital presence. TD Ah sure we heard it all the time my father like was in the special branch, and they were constantly in those days the guards like kind of following going down any cruising areas, or I remember once talking about some Judge that used to come to Cork like and they would follow him around because he picking up young fellas, there was a kind of balance as far I could see in those days, that, like there was no one obviously anyone open, they were about two openly gay men Martin Bennett in the, what was it called, he had a shop, the bargain stores in the North Main street, he was famous, everyone knew he was gay like, he would be getting off with Echo Boys and things and there was a guy, over in Boreenmanna, who was known as Father Tom I think, even though he wasn’t a priest who was into young fellas as well and there was a fella two doors up and so like it accepted that, our headmaster up in Chriost Rí used bring the good looking guys and he would sit them on his lap, like cute little first and second years and things like that, and we were aware of that, we accepted it, there was another brother who used to do it as well, and that was the norm. I remember now this, there was a brother there who used always fall in love with the young fella who would be playing the boy soprano in the opera, the annual opera, that Gilbert and Sullivan done every year like and he would be trying to kiss him backstage and we would grab, we would be working backstage as well, we would grab the young fella and we would be waiting to land, for Brother Amsel[phonetic??] would to appear, and we would shove him out in front of him. Because we just thought that this is the norm you know, but if you didn’t associate yourself with that, you would be kind of tempted alright to go looking for Uncle Tom, or Father Tom, whatever you called him, but then I kind have started an affair, or a fling with a friend of mine so that solved that problem. TW I suppose, when I put bisexual onto myself there would have been more fears, there was an even more different than the ones that are different so now there is the heterosexual people who would consider the homosexual different and then you throw bisexual into the mix now your just messing with it altogether but as I got older it makes me that little bit more unique, and as I always say there is more out there for me then there is for most people because there is more to choose from you know and when people ask me are you in the mood then for a woman one day and a man the next day, it’s nothing like that at all, you know its always, I’ll always go for the person themselves and whether they have a penis or a vagina is just, it just is, it doesn’t really matter that much, so, I mean, yeah I guess I just feel like it makes me that bit more unique. SD Em, you see I suppose my more negative was just been bullied when I was young as apposed to direct homophobia, I had things shouted from cars you know at me, or usually when I was with a certain friend who is a lot more obvious to look at that he is gay, em, but I never, I was never physically assaulted for being gay, it was just name calling, I had some problems in work, in a place I worked em but only the one place where I would come into a room and all the men would start talking about gay jokes, did you hear the latest gay joke, so they were directly throwing it in my face it was more a passive aggressive way of doing it em, but eh, I’ve never really suffered its really the only type of homophobia I suffered is my own homophobia in that I have tried so hard to fit in to a straight world where people do the whole hand signal thing that I hate where they throw their hand at a curve, you know bend it and you’re a faggott because of that, I’ve always tried to hold my hands a certain way so that when I am gesturing or whatever I would never hold it that way so I guess we all have a bit of internalised homophobia in us. DC But is that just social conventions then the way people dress and everything is so gendered… SD Yeah gender specific, yeah I mean, I would have loved like I remember when I was much younger and slimmer I had bought this top when I was in America and it was a, it was nearly see-through, it was all netting and I used to wear that going out and the amount of people that would just stare at me as if to this what the hell this because you know Cork is such a small, I know its come along way but there are still certain conventions when it comes to clothes that you are not supposed to pass, you know and em if you do your either gay or you know em… DC Do you think Cork is a good place to dress how you want? SD I think statistically Cork has a very low rate of Homophobia attacks so I think you know Cork is a good place for a gay person to grow up, you know to be gay in, em, eh, … DC I suppose yeah it’s a small city so. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. PM No, no I started going to the Otherplace at twenty-seven, twenty-eight, kind of, every Saturday night, sneaking in and sneaking out, I knew nobody so I was just going there, I used to get the last bus up, hop in, down the dark alley, sneak in the door, mortified, knocking at the door, please let me in, and going in so for the first kind of I’d say two days before I came out to myself I was kind of dabbling, not meeting anyone, just going to the club and stuff and then met a few friends and it got a bit more regular every week and then it was going to Loafers every week and then it kind of worked from there. SD Can you tell us a little bit more about your first time going to the Otherplace, the atmosphere, the feelings? PM Oh nightmare, nightmare, I used to stress, I don’t drink so I used to go up on the bus and I used to be getting ready at home and I used to get the twenty past ten bus now cause at that stage I knew no one so I used to go on my own and its down in the middle of town but its down a very dark street so you walk down, its two kind of doors and one is kind of closed off but not knowing it I used to knock at the wrong door so for the first few weeks I was like slow, knocking at the wrong door with no one coming out to me and eventually I kind of cased the joint and go out again and come around and eventually I learned that there was cameras inside so they were all watching me, laughing at me because over the time they said you were always going to the wrong door why did you keep picking the wrong door, and you had to be a member at that time so the first few times was a nightmare, walking in and this big blurry, burly bouncer said do you know where you are and I said yeah cringing, then the people behind the counter taking your coat and I’m saying I hope I know no one, you walk up a stairs, then you open a door and everyone turns and then you die, and then after a while you kind of, once I’m in there then I’m fine its just initially getting inside the door was a nightmare, for about a month, it took me months to get used to walking in there, hated it, cause you could open the door and see anyone, it could be a woman dressed as a man, or a man dressed as a woman, sorry, and it could be a bit intense so yeah, nightmare, but after a few months of that it was grand. DC What year would this have been around? PM I’m now forty-four so twenty eight how long ago is that, sixteen years ago, so it would have been 1990’s, late 1990’s, so I was doing the club scene from the 1990s onwards and then I was doing Loafers now and again, like once, depending on who I was with and hanging around with but yeah it was around that time, 1990’s, late 1990’s when I started to kind of dabble in that part of life. PMc Well in the 1960s, 1970s in Cork, there was no scene, I don’t even know, I never remember hearing the word scene, I discovered that people who felt like me, met in public toilets and the Nell MacCafferty thing obviously reinforced that, and the Nell MacCafferty court cases never put me off going into public toilets and meeting people and when I think about it now, it all sounds terribly sordid and I know it has become a kind of a subculture within the gay community, the whole cottaging the scene, and though it isn’t kind of necessary anymore I think there are still people who like to do that, almost for old times sake I suppose, that was my, that was all I was aware off in Cork. In the late 60’s early 70’s and, you know because of the nature of the situation like you went into a toilet and you met somebody and it was usually for sex and nothing else. Because you were meeting other people, who were every bit as isolated and lonely and maybe repressed, and maybe terrified that somebody would see them, as I was, and that was it. And in a way I mean I was relatively young, and I suppose anybody that I went off with, could actually have been in very serious trouble because essentially I was underage and they weren’t so it was quite an abusive situation but I didn’t see it like that you know, and it is something that I look back on now, with sadness and [pause] and I don’t think it is the most healthy way for anybody to develop their sexual identity. But that was all that was there, that was all we knew, those of us who frequented public toilets as I said, we weren’t aware of any scene, I am not sure if there was a scene, I certainly wasn’t aware of it. And one of like there is nothing you can do now. It is a, it is been, it is a huge source of regret to be now, that my formative sexual years, were carried out in that kind of environment that kind of situation, it is when, when I look now at people, growing up in their teens and, and, coming to terms with there identity and seeing all the support that is there for them, the fact that it is talked about in the schools, that is on in the school curricula and there are books TV programme etc all sorts of things around the place. And most importantly of all, places where they can go and meet other gay people and relate in a normal natural healthy way that I didn’t have growing up that and it is not just me, nobody in Cork had, as far as I know, at that time. Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. This LGBT collection of interviews is stored within the Cork Folklore Project permanent oral history archive run in conjunction with UCC’s Folklore and Ethnology Department and Northside Community Enterprises, with both a physical and digital presence. KC Em, I suppose do you know what, I actually think probably becoming a student union officer in the late 90s, or mid to late 90s would have been really where my view changed, because I grew up in a part of rural very, em, [pause] let’s just say we weren’t very forward-looking in our thought perspective, like I give the example of-- there was a gran-aunt of mine, now deceased, a lovely lady, but she got a -- she got a blood transfusion in hospital and her two-- her biggest concern when she got the blood transfusion because she had black and blue bruising around it was that she was after getting a black-man’s blood and I explained to that wasn’t how it worked, ‘twas just bruising and I also had to explain to her, look the blood could come from anywhere and of course this sent her into free-fall, because as bad as it was the idea that it was a black man’s blood, she then realised that she could’ve got protestant blood and that would’ve been the ultimate no-no, that there was protestant blood gone into her system so I had to get a priest to come along and literally give her a blessing and things to make sure that this protestant blood was dealt with, em, and that wasn’t a hundred years ago, that was literally a little over-- that was within the last twenty years that happened, and I know to this day I’m still interacting with people in different walks of life who haven’t embraced or haven’t opened their eyes to the wider community particularly, so, I suppose, I’ve always been very strong on feminist issues, I’ve been strong on, I suppose, on this particular issue, but like, and I remember when the-- I remember having to explain to people years ago when I took part in a protest about em-- which one that I still to this day can’t get my head around is the blood transfusion, that men-- that gay men can’t give blood, em, and I-- I got-- I was on the television at the time talking about it and I had umpteen people onto me afterwards “Jesus Ken, what were doing, supporting the gays, what’s that all about like?” Whereas to me it just seemed insane, I’m a blood donor as well, there’s a huge shortage of blood donations all the time. These were people for every solid medical reason they could give blood, for, they were willing to give blood when an awful lot of people weren’t and we were turning them down, and unfortunately to this day it still hasn’t been resolved. So em, there’s been-- there was no one issue but a kind of a combination of all that like, I was always going to be supportive when something like this came along then. Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. This LGBT collection of interviews is stored within the Cork Folklore Project permanent oral history archive run in conjunction with UCC’s Folklore and Ethnology Department and Northside Community Enterprises, with both a physical and digital presence. I told him one night, it was around Christmas, his family had gone to bed and we were still having a few drinks and I told him by the way and even authorised that he could tell everyone the following day if he wanted so it got out around that particular circle eventually. I never told anybody at work as such except one fellow and that was pure accident, em, I used to work down west Cork at the time but I lived in the city but this one character he used to like to come up to Cork for a few drinks, wouldn’t say every week now but every second week and he tried to make a point of meeting me and we used to always meet on Douglas Street, the Gables generally at the time and eh, I’d want to get down to Loafers before closing time do you know just to see who was around, whatever, he used go nightclubbing the nights he would come up, stay in Cork for the night and go nightclubbing. I was always escaping from him around eleven o clock and em, one night he says to me, em, Fi (possibly short for Finbarr) where do you go now, you always go away around this time, where do you go? I’m dying to know, ah I said I just go down the road to some other pup down there. Which one do you go to and maybe I had a few pints that night and I said well Dennis actually its fucking Loafers and I told him straight out then and he got the biggest land of his life, em, he more or less said he thought I would be the last person in the world to be gay but anyway he said you know what I always wanted to see what that pub is like can I come down with you, so he actually came down with me for a drink that night. DC Ah cool! FK And em I still meet the same guy, I’m gone out of that firm nine years now maybe and he’s gone out of it even before me but we still meet regularly for a drink, well when I say regularly maybe once a year, twice a year max and he never told anyone else down in work so as far as I’m concerned work never knew but I was always, I worked in west Cork, lived in Cork city so the two lives didn’t clash you know, I kept my social life completely separate from work life so as far as I know nobody down there knew, for as long as I was there now maybe I’m wrong maybe they did know and they were just been polite you know as I’m a good actor you know. I worked with another fellow in Cork, em, up to three years ago and god he was every day he’d be telling me about his conquests for the night with different various women whatever, I met the guy there last year for a drink and em, there was another member with us who he had got to know we used to meet kind of regularly and he got to know another gay character with me and the gay fellow was going away one night and my friend says where are you going now and he said I’m going down to Loafers and he said uh and when he was gone the other fellow asked me I never knew he was gay and I says sure you never asked him, I suppose not he said, by the way I am too he said whaaaat…(laughter) now a week later I met him again or two weeks later and as it turned out he ended up coming back here and initiated some sexual activity. Yeah, 71’ or ‘73 I forget what year. I have always been interested that we should always keep cutting out everything. I mean I worked in RTE and I was in the film Department and when we would be going out on the road I was well known going into the van with the Irish Times, the Irish Press, the Irish Independent as I went through all the papers, cutting everything out, cutting them perfect, putting the date on, and it went into the Archive of the Irish Gay Rights movement at that time, and I kept an interest in Archives and I mean I did a film about the Irish gay people because I felt it was very important, it shouldn’t be lost and about two and a half three years ago I thought, would you get and interview people about there story what it was like, growing up as being gay and lesbian, I mean at the time, we found that the gay movement, we were all known as homosexual people. There was no, there might have been lesbians we didn’t know about transgender and we didn’t know what the word gay was except having a great time on Gay Byrne, people like that, and it just, it is the sort of thing, I have always been interested, that we should always have information and it is the same way even today, when I have my coffee and everything else in the Irish Film Centre, I always sit at table thirteen, and people say why table thirteen? I say it is the best seat to see everyone that comes in for coffee, so you don’t miss anyone that you may have known or didn’t know. So I have been always interested in gathering up information because I think the more information we have, the easier it is to tell a story. DC And throughout your years in RTE, did you always, did you feel like you were going to do something like this later. EL Yeah, I mean RTE wasn’t a gay area as it may be now, a lot of gay people, the only time it was gay it was at Christmas, when the lights were turned on, in the whole complex, you know, outside and everything else. I, I came out as being gay in RTE I didn’t care, and I always learned that word, F off which was really good, you could say it nicely and you could say it hard, but I didn’t put up with people who were anti-gay, a lot of people might have been anti because they didn’t know what gay was. And I was a, when RTE did programmes about like Cathal O’Shannon and things like that, I knew about it, they would ask me about certain things. Because people made them, oh this is a new story lets get out and be the first ones with it, but RTE wasn’t a pro-gay, but it wasn’t anti. SD Right. Can you tell us about your vision for your project, what is your end result? EL My end result of this project is, that our history isn’t forgotten, that it has been available to everyone, especially for the thousands of young, gay and lesbian and transgender people coming on, that they will know something of their history their story, because their story has been told by people, it has not being told by me, I am just acting as the, I won’t say a judicator because I am not going to be judicate, I’m a facilitator I think would be a better word of getting people telling the story I may, bring them in a certain direction, to make sure that they haven’t forgotten something, you know, which is important like. I interviewed someone recently and I was out, at the GALA Awards did someone mention did so and so mention about, when I person died from an AIDS-related disease, the undertakers wouldn’t take the body, they had to prepare it, so there was a group of people in Dublin who were preparing peoples bodies for, for burial, I didn’t know about my in Dublin, I was in the middle of a lot of things, but I didn’t know about that, but that sort of story, and I also talking to people, who talk about their children that they have adopted and so forth, and I, you know I have learnt a lot of thing. A lot of single older gay men, may not have known that they were gay, but they were the one people that were left at home to mind there mothers to look after them in old age, and people tend to forget that, and they also tend to forget the amount of good work, be the people that have been priests, pastors, have have, done. But there are stories that I am getting out of people but it is in their words and of course before I interview anybody, they have to sign a release form, and maybe doing everything on television but that is so I can get the transcript, the transcriptions done but it also means that it can be made into programmes but only with their permission but if they decide, they do not want it to be transmitted and that, that doesn’t, it doesn’t get done. And it is going to a University, University of Galway and it will be available to everyone, it is not going into the National Archives because I regard it as a black hole of Calcutta. SD Okay DC Okay. SD And can you tell us so a little bit about the book that you plan from your Irish LGBT History Project? EL I have been in touch with the History book of Ireland and they are willing to publish it. They have been talking about cutting it back and I have, and still say no. I am a person that, I think it needs to be bigger. I think I showed you the size, I think the book can be done so I can everything in, but every person I have interviewed, I have all passed it over too, a friend of mine who is a barrister and every interview has been checked, for example, anyone a promise have been named, their name has been changed, unless you give permission for the name to be left in it or they have died because I can’t be sued if they die. SD Right, and the format that the book will take, is it going to contain direct transcripts or are you going to break everything down into themes or? EL It maybe still open, it may be down to themes and then again it may not. I am one of these people, an ex-television person, you don’t make up your mind till nearer the time, and I think there would be a mixture of both. SD Okay, can you talk to us a little bit about the documentary that you directed, did anyone notice us? EL Well I am happy to say, it was shown down here at the Cork Film Festival and it was a surprise to me that I won, I didn’t realise that, I came up with the idea, in RTE, went to Cathal Cohen who was, he wasn’t director general then, no he was head of programmes and I said Cathal, I would like to do it, you know and I said not for the organisation, can I have the use of all, all the footage, and it was forty thousand pounds worth of stuff, he said, go on, it wasn’t costing them money and so I got it all. And I knew what was in the library, that was a good thing about it and then I sat down to write a story and decided what was the best way to do it, and I thought that some classic stuff and I thought that Gay Byrne was so good, when the woman who was talking to, when she was talking about the inserter and the insertee, you know, and it’s a film that is available to everyone but someone without my permission put it on Youtube and I haven’t had, I didn’t bother take it down. I didn’t mind but I think it is important for people to have it. SD Right and the dates of that documentary go from 1973 to 1993? EL That’s when the law, we were all marching up after the law was changed. SD Why 1973, is that our earliest RTE records of that. EL It was the earliest that RTE would have, I think it was the first one they did, was The Late Late Show, with Rose Robertson, which unfortunately was wiped, and you know that was the time they were doing it, you know that was the time they were doing it that, I think the only thing was, was a piece on the radio, done by Líam Nolan talking to two gay people at the start of the first gay conference. DC And that was in 73? EL Yeah, which I was one of the people organising it. But I mean the Late Late Show, I asked Gay Byrne would he agree to have Rose Robertson on and talk about the, yeah, I said would you pay here fare over you know and the hotel, as you would with your guests, yes I would do all that. Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. This LGBT collection of interviews is stored within the Cork Folklore Project permanent oral history archive run in conjunction with UCC’s Folklore and Ethnology Department and Northside Community Enterprises, with both a physical and digital presence. E K How would I define drag? Well, I think drag has changed over the years, drag has gone from very straight up guy in a frock lip-synching to more performance art, to now it has evolved so much over the years. Now there is drag where people don’t even consider it drag, because it is just what people look like or decide what they want to wear or you know, you know drag is a kind of a funny one really you know because, again it all depends on what you, what you consider drag and the era of the drag artist. D C Yeah. E K You know, that they take on. So I mean, you know you have guys with beards these days who just wear makeup and that is considered drag, you know, you have, [pause] then you have got your Drag Kings, which I guess has been happening for quite a long time, where you have women who dress as men or you know women who have facial hair and call themselves Drag Kings. And so like I think, drag to me is fun it is not to be taken seriously and it is that’s what I think drag would be and it is about expressing yourself really I guess and kind of unleashing a side to you that you might never get a chance to do unless your that other alter ego I suppose, you know? D C So do you think it kind of had an impact on Cork and influenced people? E K Hugely. D C And changed -- E K I think that most definitely, I think that I found with Alternative Miss Cork at the start when we just started it off it was mainly just gay, do you know what I mean, it was just gay people you know, who came to the show and then the second year you could see gay peoples friends coming along. Then the third year you could see just gangs of straight people coming in because they have heard, they heard it was such a good laugh and so different, and then again you know, you saw even with the last Alternative Miss Cork we ever did, like you know over the years we went from doing small venues, to, to, to packing out the Savoy where you have got like eleven hundred people coming to this Drag show do you know what I mean, competition, drag, this, this drag competition you know, and I mean [pause] there was just like, it was actually half straight and half gay by the end of it you know. You had couples coming in, one of the shows we did was on Valentines night I think like there was an awful lot of straight couples went to it because they were just so bored of like going sitting in a restaurant with a candle between them, you know, it kind of gave people something else people to do. But I think it definitely influenced Cork I think it opened up a lot of peoples minds to diversity and to people’s sexuality as well and I think it also helped the gay scene to unite a bit because and create a bit of competition but it kind of pulled a lot of people out of the woodwork who wouldn’t necessarily be on the gay scene all the time and I think there was a lot of friends made from Alternative Miss Cork, and I think in general it was really good for the, for the, the, the Gay scene and [pause] the entire city. Description An account of the resource Eddie Kay was interviewed for an article on the Alternative Miss Cork competition that will feature in the Archive Magazine Issue 18. He was chosen as an interviewee because of his experience of organising and co-founding the Cork event. The interview came about due to knowing the interviewee socially, and from having experience of volunteering for the Alternative Miss Cork. Eddie talks about the establishment of the Alternative Miss Cork show as part of the city’s gay scene. Eddie explains how it was organised tentatively until it blossomed into an event attended by both gay and straight communities and eventually filled The Savoy theatre. After 20 years the Alternative Miss Ireland competition in Dublin closed and the Cork competition did the same. The Cork show broke down barriers between the gay and straight scenes and between the gay scene and local businesses. Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. CD No I think of a general realisation, I suppose because I am a very private kind of a person, I don’t think I am came dashing out through the snow, or like running out from the back of the bushes or anything like that, I just kept it to myself, and I you know, it wasn’t until later years that I was when I was with my current partner, I told my mum, and I told my family and you know, so I don’t think it was a big coming out event, it wasn’t that big of a deal, I told her, I expected she wasn’t going to be very happy about it but she actually, she was very happy about it, she didn’t mind, you know, I had the bags packed at the door, but you know. And I think it is good in my mind, it was kind of easier, because I was gay with somebody else, that you know because sometimes, I find that in that thing, I think I over thought it for so long, like I was twenty-six about the time I told my mother, it was kind of like all the time thinking, oh Jesus what is she, what will happen if this, if, if , if, if all the ifs and buts were going through my head, and finally I said, look I will do, but I think being with somebody else helped me, you know, and I know now that annoys people when I say that, that you have to be in a relationship to come out, I don’t think that at all, for me it was an easier path to take. SD Okay. DC And did your parents, did your mother have any suspicions, when you were a teenager? CD She asked me before and I looked not at all, that is nonsense you know, but I think, I think that is because I didn’t realise myself, you know, I was kind of fighting with it myself, because in school, you know there was a few bullies and things and they used to call me gay, and I used always be trying to know I am not. I am not different at all I had girlfriends and blah blah blah, you know but I so, she did ask, and she kind of ‘oh well I always knew that’ and that kind of annoyed me even more, because you see, what was it about me that you thought like, how dare you, you know, and I am going through the series of having to be in front of the person when I came out so I have to sit in front of the person to see the reaction, and if their eyes were a bit skewed or if they looked down or looked up, then, oh that person, they are okay with it so I can’t be talking to them but my mother went on a spree of telling everyone, when I told her she just, I think she got up on top of the, the truck at the back of the house and just told everyone, so Clive is gay, Clive is gay, Clive is gay, Clive and I hated that because I wanted to see the reaction you know of people, but I think one of the sadder things about being gay, is that you have to, you are constantly telling people, it is not just when I was twenty one or eighteen or when you are meeting new people, [phone rings in the background] constantly your, your telling people, and you know that is very, you know it is hard, you know that you are always having to tell people about your, you know, about your sexuality. CB Without even realising it, yeah, on of, you’ve just reminded me but apologies my pet fly Freddy has come back (laughter), when we had our ceremony our neighbours they used to be ourselves and our other neighbours up the road, we were the only ones here just until recently and we just got to know them, we never said anything and then we were having our ceremony and we invited them and I never forget the wife, she is a lovely lady, Joan and she turned around and she said you know what she said delighted to be invited but I’ve also never been to one of these before and I just wanted to see what way it would turn out and even at the ceremony one of my cousins turned around, I’ll never forget she was walking by me, the language, it wasn’t bad language she said feck sake this is better than my own wedding, heterosexual couple, so we are making probably slight changes as you say but we still get a few little knocks. There is a crèche here in Mallow that we used to have our son in, we took him out for health reasons for him and the owner turned around and when we were speaking to her she said well we did make allowances for your family unity. Now when she said it at the time I was, okay fine, we are doing the right thing by taking him out of here and putting him in another place and not a bother, I think we’re, myself and Tracy the ones who are more conscious of peoples reaction, do they think I have lied to them, you know because I haven’t said we are a couple but yeah making small little changes, I wouldn’t be surprised when Sean starts school that there might be another same-sex couple who might be putting their child in cause I remember ringing up. I rang up last year to put Sean's name on the list and the lady turned around and said you are not living in Dublin dear you can ring next year and put his name on the list whereas in Dublin when the baby is in the womb you have to put the child's name on the list to get them into the school but this is Mallow I think you could probably put the child's name down a couple of weeks beforehand. So I just said to her also look I was looking to see if we could meet the principle. I said em, Sean he has two mothers, I’m assuming I probably shouldn’t but that it was an old dear because there was a bit of stuttering and coughing and pick yourself up off the floor kind of thing, no problem whatsoever whenever you want to make an appointment that’s fine my dear, yeah, you just ring back whenever you are ready and I rang back and it was the same lady, and I said I am looking to make an appointment with the principle to come in just to explain about Sean and that he has two mothers. Oh, I was speaking to you before, come in whenever you want, there is no problem, come in whenever just call in. We haven’t gone in, no need, we think if we go in it will kind of make it a bigger thing. Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. This LGBT collection of interviews is stored within the Cork Folklore Project permanent oral history archive run in conjunction with UCC’s Folklore and Ethnology Department and Northside Community Enterprises, with both a physical and digital presence. CK John Roche, now I am not sure, how you know the usual thing but he is dead, I am not sure about his family they, the problem when people die, like the same with Flynn, Foley, Flynn and can’t remember his first name, Flynn in Fairview Park, when he was beaten to death his family objected to us, saying that he was cruising that he was gay, in fact, what we did is said, well look even if he is not gay, that is exactly the point, that in fact even straight people are risked by homophobia and battering. SD Yeah. CK But John Roche was a, you, you know he was a lovely guy he lived in Cork -- SD I was just going to ask did his death help influence you in marching when the Fairview murder. CK Oh absolutely you know because I mean, the other one, is that before the Fairview murder as well there was the Charles Self. And the Charles Self was a designer at RTE, this was in 1981, he was murdered. 1982 was the protest around it, and he was bludgeoned to death, I didn’t see photographs or anything but the description, he was bludgeoned to death in his apartment, he was a well to do designer in RTE, what is presumed is that he brought somebody back and this person went psycho and bludgeoned him to death. Now I suppose I should say that to me this is something I haven’t really talked about before I have, talked to a couple of people personally about it is, in many cases I say to people I have been very lucky, like for instance Lawrence Davis, I hope he doesn’t mind, I am sure he won’t mind me mention it, he is kind of the chair of the LGBT staff network here in UCC, he is from America, but he is living in Dublin and he is commuting up and down but Lawrence and I were talking about violence against gays, because I was saying, we were somewhere yes, we were walking through, and the day of the referendum count, Lawrence was in Cork and we were walking from the count centre to get something to eat, about four or clock in the afternoon, you know the count was coming in, the count centre people were sitting in and cheering, I said to Lawrence this is going on much longer but I am going to need some food, I am going to go out and get some, and he said well I will go with you because we will come back you know, we came back for six o clock news but on the way to get food, we passed by the Gate cinema, and as we were crossing the road, Lawrence said lets go across the road here, and I said why? There were a bunch of young fellas, young teenagers just horsing around, but he felt kind of nervous, I said look, trust me I am from Cork, I know how to handle these guys at this thing but talking about it afterwards I said but I have been lucky really I had never had any violence, I think he said, I have been beaten up twice and it really makes you aware you know, how vulnerable. And I’d had a friend in Dublin and the scene in Dublin and he was a lovely guy, he was a teacher, well he is a teacher, but a lovely guy and he was great outgoing and great fun and, and then I heard he had been beaten up, he had been out cruising in Powerstown [phonetic spelling] Park and he had beaten up and I didn’t see him for about six or nine months and then I met him about yeah twelve months later, and I was talking to him over drink. And he said Cathal my whole life has changed, he said now, said before this happened, I walked around and I didn’t even think about safety, I just assumed I was safe everywhere I went, I didn’t even look around me, I just, now he said, I am terrified of even going to a gay bar without looking around, are there, are there bashers, you know looking for clients there, looking for potential targets, you know because they will follow you out of the bar and then beat you up, he said look I am terrified, my sense of safety, I can’t relax at all, they have destroyed my very living day to day every minute, now Lawrence wasn’t as bad obviously but it was again, if you were beaten up, I said, I was saying to him I haven’t had that experience but then, of course, I ended up saying to him, telling him I think about an experience I did have which was in Cork. I mentioned that Tadgh and Dominic had showed me how to cruise and I said how horrified I was about all this, but I was having difficulty, finding people to have sex with, I have never been, I have always had difficulty with sex in that sense since I was you know. It is, in some people are great they can go into, I have never gone into a sauna, believe it or not, I have gone into a sauna to get money for the Fairview march from people in Dublin but I got it at the counter. I never went, I have never gone into and I lived in Amsterdam and I was just five hundred metres up the way from the night sauna and about seven hundred and fifty metres away from the, the day sauna. People used to say, but why haven’t you? I said, friends of mine used to go, go in but I never, I just somehow it is not my kind, I need to see people, I need to be able to relate to them. I, I need, I am probably still Catholic enough for me to believe, even though I have one night stands, I always said I never have one night stands, I always had a potential relationship until the following morning, they said goodbye, or I said goodbye. So that is the kind of mentality, but there I was in Cork, I was not settled into Cork, I was nineteen, I was living in Sundays Well with my own apartment. So I had my own place, so now I should have been just having sex every night, I should have had a live-in lover, but I certainly should have, I had my own space it was not a problem by not having a bed to go to, not having privacy but I still wasn’t getting the sex. People seem to be shying away from me or I was alienating people, blah blah, I hadn’t met, it was about the time I met David maybe, but the thing is that, I was, and used, I used to get, in those days you got paid in cash, and you got paid a week, once a, on a Friday, and you got, and your money was put in a little brown envelope and they gave it to you, you went down collected it so a Friday afternoon I collected my money, and I was just feeling, I went in, I, I decided to go straight into town. I had lunch at work, because that was kind of thing, I went straight into town went into the bar or whatever, I went into a bar had a few drinks, had a few more drinks, went to, it was probably Le Chateaux I think at the time, or possibly the Imperial or maybe both because there was a kind of, kind of a trail that you could do as well, you know the way gay people, you want to, one bar would be just so boring, it would be much more fun, particularly for the kind of cruisiness. You would move to, and the pub closed, and I was very drunk and I had my brown envelope in my pocket and I walked up, I remember, it must have been the imperial, I walked up North Main street, and there is, when you cross the North Gate Bridge, just at the end of Shandon street, there was a little, tiny little loo, there, which was open air, and was just like literally, two, if you can imagine two concrete walls and there was a kind of entrance way on one side and then there was a piss, wall, and basically just you could just piss there, and the water, and it is just flowed directly into the river, because it was just on the side of the river, so it is like if you know where the taxi company has a little hut there at the end of Shandon street on the quay just directly across from that, so I went and I decided and that was a cruising area a big cruising area as well believe it or not even though it could only fit like two or three people but there, what you need, the way it works. So I went in there [pause] and I came out and there was nobody in there and I so I pissed and I came out and thought right that is the end of it now I said, I am going to walk up home to Sunday’s Well up along the Quay, and as I was walking up along the Quay, I realised I thought there was somebody following me and looked around and there was gorgeous guy, tight clothes, looking like he could be a sailor or something, I thought, and he over took me as I was climbing the hill of Sundays Well and we got talking and he was on for sex, so we went back into my bedsit, and the next thing I remember, I was very drunk so the next thing I remember is that my coat, my coat was on the hook of the back of the door, I was naked, lying naked on the bed and it was just a single bed, and he was half clothed his top was off but not his trousers and he was sitting on me, and I remember him just sort of [pause] pinning my arms down, and saying so you like it rough, and I was saying maybe yeah please. And then he was slapping my face and he was suddenly, suddenly all I remembered is him saying, something about money and of course, I was such a person, I got so insulted with the idea, that there was going to be money involved with this, and then I got frightened. So I was robbed, and I just, so then I got scared, and I remember just saying just take the money, it is in the inside pocket of the jacket or whatever so he took my money and disappeared with all my money for that week, and of course in those days, I lived on a week to week to basis, a bit like Eastenders, you know you only have the money that you earn that week. And I think so, I had to go to Eddie, he was the only person I told about this. I couldn’t tell my parents they would have been horrified and Eddie lent me enough money to get through the week. And I never really told many people but deep down it obviously, when I say I have never been beaten up since. One of the things and that is why I was saying about the back of the bus and being visible, is that [pause] you can have a self-selected, you know, kind of, you control your space, so you never go to spaces where you are likely to be in danger, and so I yes, I would feel that maybe that even though I have covered it up, now that I am looking back, I would say what I learned from that thing, was that I was never going to put myself in that position as possible. And that when I have gone into positions, like when living in Amsterdam, I had an American friend visiting as well from New York but he was a good friend, but he we were walking along the quays one night coming from a bar, a beautiful night, and suddenly he got very edgy, there were two black guys coming for us, and I spoke fluent Dutch at this stage, and there was no thing, of racial, you didn’t have racism in Amsterdam you know it was quiet but he got, very and he had been beaten up in New York and it was, he had that New York kind of distrust of people who were black, in America, kind of deep down, and he is you know, unaware of, he went I said look trust me this is my space, I know it just, but he didn’t we were walking past, and one of the guys could see something going you know could feel it. And just he started shouting what is going on over there, ye don’t like this or something or what and my friend ran, and then I was left there, they came over to me, and so I was talking Dutch to them and persuading them and trying got out of it by talking so I think yeah I mean I feel very strongly that if you know, if you talk about that is why when you look at the Fairview march as I said, this guy has just done his thesis on, on gays against imperialism and that all whole gay collective thing. And he makes a comment and I have just read it, and he makes a comment in it that you know, that we the documentation, and the Archive shows because I would have forgotten some of it so, we deliberately we made a very specific thing, that we were not conservatives saying hang them high, give them harder sentences lock them away for life. We turned the Fairview march in on, and the front banner said stop violence against gay’s and women, and we need to. Description An account of the resource The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) collection was launched and created in August 2014 by Stephen Dee and Dermot Casey, researchers at the Cork Folklore Project. The Project was established to record and preserve stories and memories of LGBT life in Cork City and County, with a focus prior to decriminalization in 1993 but also to document the important achievements and struggles that contributed to a society that today is far more accepting of LGBT people. This is proven today with the legalisation of same sex marriage through popular vote and the increased visibility of LGBT people in all areas of public life. The collection’s aims are to explore three main aspects: ‘Personal Recollections’ including but not limited to identity, coming out and experiences of homophobia; ‘Community Stories’ based on certain areas, streets, and forms of social interaction within the LGBT community; and ‘Political Movements’, chronicling political events, motivations and outcomes such as the creation of the Cork-based Irish Gay Rights Movement in 1976, Cork Gay Collective in 1980, and UCC Gay Soc in 1980. Each interview we conducted was unique with each interviewee covering some or all of these topics and with some areas being explored in depth. We hope the material can complement LGBT research in Ireland and also stimulate further interest amongst the public in LGBT history. To date we have distributed some of this material to the public with an audio visual presentation on YouTube and in 2016 in conjunction with Cork City Partnership for LGBT Awareness week we produced a public exhibition of our sound excerpts at Cork City Library. Special thanks to all our interviewees and also to Alvina Cassidy whose research also features in this collection. This LGBT collection of interviews is stored within the Cork Folklore Project permanent oral history archive run in conjunction with UCC’s Folklore and Ethnology Department and Northside Community Enterprises, with both a physical and digital presence. Partly I suppose because you know, say the three years in my undergraduate from the age of seventeen to twenty, I was realising more and more, this isn’t a phase that is a going away. This is how I am, and I must be the only one as well, but I knew I wasn’t, because there was an attempt and I, -- DC What was year was this now was this in UCC? BOD I started in 78 and I think it would have been maybe about ’79 or ’80 there was an attempt to establish a gay society and that is what it was going to be called a gay soc, gay in UCC. And the University opposed it, in fact, the University wouldn’t allow it, so I don’t know what year, I, I? DC I think it was about then because we spoke to Cathal and he? BOD To Cathal Kerrigan? DC Yeah, he was the auditor wasn’t he ? -- BOD Well he, well he was the auditor, well he was also that was an interesting story in itself, because that would have been either my second or third year so either 79 or 80 and he, he was elected as a, what would you call it, chairman or president, of the UCC students Union. And you know I think he got it because his dad was a TD so he was seen as a natural leader or whatever and then after he was elected president of the students Union, he came out or he let it be known that he was gay. And this caused a lot of consternation; I don’t think there is any way he would have been voted in, if that had been known prior, because, I actually I can put a date on this, I think it was 1980, or 81 because the hunger strikes were on in Northern Ireland, so it was an awful time in Ireland generally like you know the economy was down the toilet, and then you had this nothing seem to go right for the country but anyway the hunger strikes were on and as part of that, the students union, I think Cathal may have, I don’t know done something, like closed in sympathy or made some expression of sympathy in one direction or another. And there was a general assembly of the students call somebody objected to this, now I can’t remember what led up to this, but anyway so there was general assembly, in the main restaurant in UCC and Cathal stood up, and it was like prior to that he had led some kind of a student protest about fees or something like that, and there was a sit-in, in the presidents office and you know there were kind of general meetings, and he would have seen as somebody who was doing stuff that was worth doing but then he came out and there was this general meeting called, as I say, I think it was about the hunger strikes and the student response to it and he got up on the stage and he said something like oh we have a query here from somebody and the whole place erupted into laughter, and it was like, I was looking around, I was like whatever, nineteen, twenty, I was looking around, I was like seriously? Like that is the reaction, that is you know this is so funny because a queer has the said the word query? And I do remember thinking you know looking around the room and saying these are, this is Irelands future leaders, this is not a good sign, you know and to be honest I didn’t have a high opinion of my fellow students, and you know the kind of guffaws of laughter, and oh Jesus it was pathetic, but then things got on to things to discussing whatever substantive issue was, but that for me, was a kind of a real moment of kind rejection if you like by my peers even though it had nothing to do with me.
