Founded in 1924 by Fr Christopher O'Flynn. The theatre, up to the year 2000 was based out of the upper floor in Linehan's sweet factory John Redmond Street which is why it gained the moniker "The Loft". Since its inception, the group has put on a variety of Shakespeare's works in various theatres in the city including the Cork Opera House and the Everyman Theatre. He recalls whenever a boat would come in to Cork the women from Spangle Hill would go down the hill with prams to meet their husbands or male relatives who were coming over from England and use the prams to transport their luggage back up the hill. On a big day you would see a lot of them pushing prams up the hill. He says they would also use the prams for bringing shopping home. He says speaks of how some local men would be over in Dagenham Ford plant during the War. There would be little or no traffic on East View Terrace. There was just a row of houses, just sixteen houses on one side, on the left, and on the right you had the wall of Quaker graveyard, a blank wall. East View Terrace was the place to play ball to our mind! But some of the residents didn’t like it. We often held a full-scale hurling match there, on a Sunday afternoon. I remember one particular incident, one of the lads who used to play there with us, one age with myself, he and I and another chap, Michael Maverly (God Rest him) who was a few years older than us, and we were playing ball, at lunchtime in East View Terrace, and old guard Halloran coming on his bike, from Barrack Street Station to his home in Ballinlough at lunchtime just swung casually into the terrace and caught us playing ball. So he took our names and one of the lads who was with us there, his grandmother lived as he did, in East View Terrace, his grandmother came down and spoke to the guard and said “this lad wasn’t with them at all, this is Pat, my grandson, catching him by the hand and attempting to take him away. So Guard O’Halloran in his wisdom said, “ One moment Mam, that lad was playing with them when I came along. And incidentally, he said, “aren’t you the woman who came into the station to report these lads. The three of us were fined for playing ball there, three and sixpence (three shillings and sixpence) V.C: An innocent offence, B.McC: Three shillings and sixpence each, for playing ball, V.C: That was a lot of money then, B.McC: And very coincidentally when Guard O’Halloran called after the court hearing to collect the fine, it turned out that he went to school with my mother. V.C: He still took the three and sixpence though! Haha! B.McC: He still took the fine. Title A name given to the resource Billy McCarthy: Quaker Road, Public Baths, Childhood Description An account of the resource Billy was born in 1941. His mother, Mary Ann Cronin, was from Mayfield; her father, William Cronin served with the British army during the First World War, and later became a postman. His father’s family came from Dunmanway, West Cork. His father, Patrick McCarthy, served with the IRA between 1919 and 1921, and later came to Cork to work as a conductor on the trams. He was reared on Irish nationalist history and recites a poem he wrote in his twenties, The Glorious Hour, about Michael Collins and Tom Barry. Billy grew up at Quaker Road. The house had a large garden, and his father raised pigs; on the way to Murphy's Bacon Factory on Evergreen St, they were taken through the house itself. He comments on watching the pigs being slaughtered in the factory. Billy remembers Scannell and Finnegan’s shop, which sold oils, and scrap pictures for scrapbooks. Teenage treats could be got at Kiely’s Chip Shop Maylor St, which he believes was one of the first in the city, and at Harrington’s milk and cake shop. He tells a story about playing street hurling and being caught and fined by the police. Swimming could be done at the indoor Eglantine Street Baths and outdoor Lee baths at the Straight Road. In Summer these were always overcrowded, and he learnt to swim in the River Lee instead. Billy talks briefly about fishing for tadpoles, roach and trout. As a kind of initiation, young boys would lie beside the railway tracks as a train passed. He recalls “the snotty bridge”, an old limestone bridge that had developed stalactites underneath it over time. He sings a song called The Leprechaun. Billy recalls the polio epidemic of 1957 and the fact that Cork people were not welcome in other counties as a result. He briefly recalls the Marian year of 1954. He sings a song called “By Degrees”. ML Okay from the practical point of view it was to improve my English because I did a degree you know after dropping my medical studies. I did a degree in English philosophy to become a secondary teacher and then by the time I finished I..my marriage was not going very well whatever you know and a few circumstances were together you know and I wanted to leave the country definitely then. My choice could be an English speaking country and because one of my best friends in Madrid was married to an Irish man from Cork you know she recommended to me that Cork would be an ideal place and everything. I came here and I’m here. I just came for 10 months and now it’s been almost 4 years since I came. SH And what do you think of the relative living standards between the two? Cork and (?) would they be similar standard of living or expectations? Would one be better than the other one? Or what would be some similarities or differences? ML That’s a hard question because I don’t know. There are many differences regarding you know as simple things as times for meals you know? That is kind of a big issue when you first move here you know? For me, it was really difficult to think about having my dinner at 6 when in Spain we never have it before 9 or 10 or if you go out for a dinner even later you know than some it kind of a big difference but I would say that nowadays we could just go towards … there are not so many differences. Most people try to be happy to get a living from their work and to improve their situation. SH Would you think that Irish people had a similar amount of money, disposable incomes, spending power or a bit more? ML No, I would there are more money in Spain because I don’t know how it works but most people that I know they are in debt. That some Irish people have rents in Madrid for example if you consider a teacher married to a nurse lets say their standard of living would be better in Spain than here. I don’t know exactly why maybe the tax system is stronger here or wherever and definitely things like food are much more expensive here than they are… the bare essentials not much you know? They are expensive. SH What about the poorer people do think they would be better off here or the welfare state would be more inclusive here for them? ML Definitely the welfare state is better here you know? They have more support from the state then they will have in Spain but for example, if you think people here they have kind of benefit employment or whatever but the thing is that if you go onto some kind of work in the black market it’s much better paid in Spain then here you know? Then I think that makes the difference because definitely Spain is the country in Europe with the highest rate of unemployment but people are surviving. They are so happy if you go to a disco it’s full of people. If you go to a restaurant it’s full and then I don’t know how people can manage but definitely they are managing. She talks about differences between Galicia and Madrid. Maria talks briefly about ghosts and superstitions of Galicia and about the Galician language. N.H: Well when we moved to Listowel in 1967 I think it was mm we were notorious we were the wild Hennessey bunch that blew into town one day and caused a storm until the day we left, what we used to get up to was ah there was a castle in the square in Listowel, and we used to climb that, get up to the top of it, and there was a gooseberry tree on the top of it and used to eat the gooseberries off it you know. We used to ride horses, we used to ah play games with this goat we had. You’d put down your head forward, and the goat would put down its head forward and run at you, you know, and you’d grab it by the horns and push and it would push you know? We’d ah … we used to… cowboys and Indians and all those things you know that children did back in those days you know. S.H: Can you remember any older sort of traditional childhood sort of games like ah .. variants of ‘four square’ or skipping ‘hopscotch’ boys don’t usually skip but ‘hopscotch’ or marbles or? N.H: Yeah, marbles conkers, ah the spinning top a piece of wood shaped sort of like a cone, and you have a piece of stick with its ring off it and you whip it and it spins, spinning top you know. And yoyos’ we had, but one of my earliest memories would have been in mm in Longford or Laisebrooke?? in the square in Laisebrooke playing conkers during the school break you know. S.H: Yeah. N.H: There was a lot of conker trees around the area you know, but ah .. yeah we had a lot of creatures as pets when we were growing up you know, we’d tortoises we’d hedgehogs, we’d foxes, we’d a hawk we’d ah… S.H: How did you come to have a hawk? N.H: We found - It fell out of a nest, and we had a crow as well. S.H: Gee, at the same time? N.H: Different periods. S.H: What sort of hawk was it do you know? N.H: Just an ordinary hawk. S.H: Yeah. N.H: I think we S.H: Was it friendly or? N.H: We used to feed it you know. I think we let it go, let it into the wilds. But we had a crow, Jacko was its name, and mm it would squawk every time it was hungry and it would be in the garage you know, and we’d go out and feed it bread and milk you know, but ah Jacko – I mean, he used to sit on my mother’s shoulder while she was reading a book you know, and he would try and read, try and communicate with us you know. Or when we had the foxes we used to play with the foxes. S.H: How did you come to have foxes? N.H: Ah my father brought them home one day from Tarbert, when Tarbert Power Station was being built you know, and ah he brought it home, thought that we might like it and its name was Rooey it was a vixen. S.H: What was its name? N.H: Rooey. S.H: Rooey, yeah. N.H: It means red one, red one and mm Rooey, we used to play with it and, it used to eat liver that is all it would do. We eventually gave it to Eamonn De Butleir who had a wild sanctuary up in Dublin somewhere – up in Wicklow. He came down from Wicklow one afternoon while we were at school, but he waited until we came home from school and then he took the fox and let it free in his reserve you know. S.H: Obviously, he thought it was nice to tell you kids it was going, he didn’t just want to take it. N.H: We had got a dog then you see, we fell in love with this pup called Sancha, and ah my mother rather than put the fox down we decided to give it to Eamonn De Butleir and let him look after it you know. S.H: Would the dog and fox not have been able to co-exist? N.H: Not really I wouldn’t have thought so because the fox would have been frightened of the dog you know, even though the dog would have been a pup you know. S.H: Yeah. N.H: They wouldn’t have really got on because the dog would have got older much quicker, and its instinct for a dog to hunt foxes anyway you know. He spent his earliest days in an orphanage. His father was from Egypt and his mother was Irish, and their relationship was frowned upon by his mother’s family. He was adopted and lived in Dublin and then in County Kerry. As a child, the family had a pet crow and a pet fox. His father was a construction engineer. In Listowel, he was taught by writer Bryan MacMahon and learnt to speak Irish. He talks about the difficulties of being mixed race in Ireland. He spent time in London and set up a co-operative organisation to provide housing. H: Did you ever hear the phrase ‘‘ lime burners '' applied to the people around Millfield, the Millfield Cottages? L. F: No. S. H: I only mentioned that because somebody told me that, that was a name in the twenties and thirties sometimes applied half-jokingly later to people from around that area because apparently A lot of, quite a few people from that area joined the British forces in the First World War. L. F: Is that right? S H: And, yeah so the story went, and then after independence people didn't want much to do With them, you see because they were “lime burners”, and if somebody's been burning lime there's a horrible stench from them. L. F: I don't know? S. H: No I just thought that you know, perhaps you had heard the phrases, it's interesting to see how far these phrases carry. L. F: The only things I can tell you about the British thing right is, that em, my own mum was nearly killed by a hand grenade in the buildings down here you know Maddens buildings down here, she had just eh, she was in the shop getting messages… S. H: What shop would that be? L. F: That would have been, do you know it could have been Murnane’s, just one of the shops down the street here right, it had to have been right, and she had just got in the door right, and there was this unmerciful bang right, just right where she is and it damaged the door even right ...so. S. H: What happened? L. F: Somebody threw a hand grenade, at one of the Brits I think, maybe one of the rebels, threw it. S. H: Was anyone hurt? L. F: No, no one hurt. S. H: You, can't, she wouldn't remember the year, it would have been 1919 or 1920... L. F: Well she was living in the buildings at that time so, she wasn't married right so she must have been only a teenager, she must have been em, probably around fourteen or fifteen, but I remember her telling me that story. S. H: Did she also tell you something about hearing the shots that killed Thomas MacCurtain? L. F: She did, yeah... S. H: What could she remember about that? L. F: The shots, remember, em, remember hearing the bangs at the time of the, and, I, I'm not absolutely sure of the story but I think at the time, she might have been in somebody else’s house near at hand when it happened, and these bangs went around the place, and nobody, people are used to hearing bangs around then as well of course right ... and, or I said there's some shots gone off right, and it's only then did it come out that they were after being shot you know. So she did hear the shots, yeah. S. H: Did any of them have sort of Nationalist or Republican leanings, your family, or did events more or less pass them by? L. F: They did pass them by but there was always a close, like that thing like about the bomb now going off right, something similar happened to my father because he was a barber first, right, in his young days, when the British people were ruling completely, right, and they used have these sort of eh, I don't know what you'd call them, I suppose eh, this thing that they'd come in with their guns and search every place, do you know what I mean? So they came into the Barbershop and all hand up in the air immediately right and they searched the place and they gave it a real gruelling over, I mean right down into the pots and pans and whatever it was that they had in the thing looking for bombs and he was only a young fella at the time serving his time, he told me this and em, he eh, he was scared out of his livings, because they'd put the gun in your face and that was it right, and when they went away the guys that were, the other two barbers that were there were laughing about the whole thing, and they put their hand up the chimney and pulled down this box full of soot and opened it and here's two guns inside in it, the box right... S. H: You could have all been shot maybe yeah... L. F: Oh, no problem, you know, and he said that was the closest brush that he ever came across. S. H: Were they Black and Tans or Auxiliaries or Regulars or could he remember? L. F: The guys that came in were the Black and Tans, right, and the guys that were the rebels, or what we used to call em in those days, what were they? The IRA I suppose, the Old IRA I suppose, you know... S. H: That's very interesting. Liam was born in 1940 in Water Lane. His father, John, was a cabinet maker, who also liked to play music, and could play accordion, mandolin and piano. He didn’t like school, where one teacher used a cane on the pupils; some parents accepted corporal punishment but others attacked some teachers; he tells a story about getting his father to frame a picture to win favour with a teacher who still continued to hit him. Liam tells a story about his mother avoiding a hand grenade thrown at British soldiers during the War of Independence, and her hearing the shots that killed Tomás MacCurtain [in 1920]. When his father was a young man a barbershop he worked in was raided by the Black and Tans and he had a gun held to his face. So did you have a favourite journey when you were driving, a favourite train journey? J.C: Favourite journeys now were, the favourite trains that I worked anyway were the 8 o’clock routes to Dublin, that was a great train. I used do a lot of chaps turns on the 8 o’clock routes because there was money in it, there was nearly double the amount of what you’d earn on other jobs. You see there was all the mileage and the overtime. Well as I say I was a kind of family man and I didn’t spend much away from home. I always tried to make as much as I could for the family like you know. But of course a trip to Dublin on the 5.30, I remember one evening; I’ll tell you about a trip to Dublin. I left Cork one evening at 5.30 and you’d be supposed to pass Charleville at six minutes past six, and I passed Charleville at six minutes past six and at eleven minutes past six I was after passing Charleville down and I was going fairly well. All of a sudden the brakes went on the train. I got on to control and I told them that I was in trouble. I didn’t know what was wrong I said but the brakes were after going on and I said I’d get back to you. I jumped off the engine anyway to go back to the guard to tell him I was in trouble and I hadn't to go far when I saw what trouble I had. There was a hose between the engine and the first carriage, ‘twas gone, it must have blown into a field. The air from the engine was blowing mad you see, I was losing…. S.H: What would the hose do control the air pressure? J.C: Yeah. You see ‘twas the connection for the carriages so when I lost that, I lost all the brake, the brake went on. So I went back to your man anyway, Control and I said ‘I’m in right trouble’ I said, ‘the air hose is gone’ I said. ‘It was blown off’ I said, ‘Jesus’ he said, ‘we’re in right trouble’. ‘Why’, I said. He said ‘there’s no one in Cork to go to your assistance and there’s no one in Limerick. ‘The only thing’ he said ‘I can do’, and ‘twas just quarter past six at this time, he said ‘I’ll send a man down with a hose to you from Dublin on the 6.25’. ‘Is it codding me you are’, I said. ‘6.25, what time will that be down here to me?’. ‘Look’ I said, ‘leave it to me, I’ll see what I can do and I’ll get back to you’ you see. S.H: Right. J.C: And I walked back the train to go back to the guard to tell him that I was in right trouble. On my way back I found a big nut and bolt, right? S.H: Em. J.C: And I was thinking where am I going to get a hose and I thought there should be a hose in the back on the rear carriage. But you see I also thought that they are put on with a machine, so anyway I went back and told the guard, he was gone back a distance now but I gave him a shout and I started beating, flaking the big nut anyway. I flaked and I flaked. Jesus the next thing it started to come, I could feel it slackening and I kept at it and kept at it and I got it. I told the guard to call for a man that was on the train, his name was Mick O’Connell, he was an electrician in Dublin and I saw him on the platform in Cork. Now he was in his good clothes but at least he’d be of some assistance to me. S.H: What do you think the rest of the passengers were thinking by this time? J.C: Well I told your man to tell them that we’d be a while. S.H: Yeah. J.C: So anyway, he called for this Mick O’Connell, the electrician. Mick came out. ‘Jesus’, he said ‘what’s wrong with you’, and I told him. So we went up and I fixed on the tube, the hose and your man gave me a hand to beat it on then like, and I hooked up. Got up on the engine and phoned your man in Control again and I said ‘I’m ready now nearly to go on with this train’. ‘Your not’, he said. I said ‘I am, I’m ready now’. Says he ‘there’s a man on the 6.25 gone down anyway’. So I got the brake, got everything in order, everything was right, got up on the engine and off. Do you know where I met him? S.H: Where? J.C: Above in Templemore. We’d have been about two hours late; I was only half an hour late getting into Dublin. But I was congratulated, I got a letter from Dublin and I got a new uniform and I got fifty pounds and a letter of congratulations, I have it as a matter of fact still. So that was my good trip. S.H: Yeah, and what about Mick O’Connell? J.C: Oh, I’ll tell you the story of Mick O’Connell. In my report then I told them that ‘there was a man travelling on the train, an electrician, Michael O’Connell, and I would be very thankful to you if you would see fit that he should be compensated for the work that he did with me during the break-down’. He was paid four hours and he was brought in on over-time that Sunday. He got a Sunday and he got four hours for working with me. S.H: Very good. J.C: So he was a very happy man. Title A name given to the resource John Collins: Working Life, Railways, Corporal Punishment, Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource John was born in 1928. His family was from Bandon. His father worked on the Cork and Bandon Railway and was transferred to the city in 1929, the family living at Killbarry Cottages, Blackpool. The family moved to a house in Lower Road which was also owned by the railway company. John left school at 16 and joined the railway immediately. His earliest memory is of seeing the cattle trains pass the cottages and his dreaming of being a train driver. He tells a story about corporal punishment at school that rebounded on the master. He recalls a supernatural experience at work. John describes his work as a train shunter, preparing trains for travel to various stations, which he says was well paid. His first job had been cleaning the train engines, which he describes as dirty work. Kent station used to employ up to 500 men, but when steam trains were replaced by diesel trains, employment fell off. He worked as a fireman, loading coal into the steam engine, and was stationed in Courtmacsherry and Mallow. He explains that steam train drivers had to be very skilled at their job. He became a diesel train driver in 1962. He tells a story about unexpectedly having to work on a train all the way to Dublin when he was 17. He tells another story about repairing a train brake hose at night and receiving a commendation afterwards. He remembers an incident when a thief stealing barrels of Guinness from the wagons had a leg cut off by the train. He laments the closing of railway lines, particularly the line to Youghal, which he remembers as very busy. John retired in 1993 but retains his interest in the railways. I had an engine off the road in Tralee. Vandals… S.H: Yeah, when was this? J.C: It was about 1989. Vandals, they broke the light in a dolly, ‘twas called a dolly you know. And there were two white lights and a red light and they broke the red light so at a distance I could see no red light. So, unfortunately, I took the wrong colour then, you see ‘twas two white lights but they were in the wrong position and I went off the road. S.H: Do you think these people do this knowingly, knowing they could cause a terrible smash? J.C: Oh they did of course, ‘twas young fellas like you know. S.H: It could actually cause two trains to collide or something. J.C: Ah no, no, ‘twas only in a shunting-yard, you know. I was unlucky anyway. S.H: How would they get into the shunting-yard? J.C: Oh sure I mean coming from school ‘twas a shortcut going home. S.H: Oh I see it’s not even fenced off. J.C: No, no, ‘twas a shortcut going home you know and they’d be passing these places and unfortunately they broke the light and I walked into trouble over it. S.H: What was that like actually, was it that you got a horrible jolt? J.C: I got a big jolt and it took a while to put her back on the road then you know. S.H: You didn’t have to have time-off work or…? J.C: No, no, I didn’t. S.H: Do they have an enquiry into an incident like that? J.C: Oh there was no enquiry but… S.H: They just come around and have a look, do they? J.C: That’s it, yeah. S.H: Do you have any special railway police? J.C: Oh they’d have police now around Heuston and Inchicore and these places but in the yard over. S.H: Would they be very specialised? J.C: No, no, they’d be a Group 4 crowd you know. They’re around over in the yard you know for fear stuff would be stolen and that kind of thing, the same in all yards where there are Guinness now or groceries or stuff? J B: Many, many occasions. S H: What do you think, do you think he was one of the greatest of all hurlers? J B: He was, no doubt, he was, he was simply a marvel. But there were many other great players too. Ring had -- S H: Did you meet him? J B: Funny, I met him once and, an unusual occasion, one famous match in Thurles in 1944 and there was no transport in Ireland during the War. And we went to Thurles, we cycled to Thurles, three of us, the two chaps I told you about earlier and myself, three of us cycled to Thurles. We left Cork early Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock and we stayed in Cashel that Saturday night, on to Thurles on Sunday morning. And one of these chaps, Sean Norton, he’s still alive, he was working in Suttons. Suttons had a big store on the South Mall at the time. And Christy Ring was driving a lorry for Williams in Midleton, and he used to come into Sutton's collecting stuff or delivering stuff, one or the other, probably both, but Sean knew him from coming into Suttons, and we were in Thurles on that Sunday morning and we met Christy Ring. J B: And we were only 18, 19, Christy was a couple of years older. And Sean knew him and we spoke to Christy Ring on that Sunday morning and just for five, ten minutes and he went away from us then. And that same day he scored a marvellous goal to win the game for Cork. J B: He did, he did. and he ran fifty yards solo run and scored a great goal. S H: And what do you think were his greatest attributes as a player? J B: Well he was an unusual man. Every game he played, no matter what the occasion, big or small, I would say every fibre of his being went into that game. J B: No matter what it was. And he was more determined than anybody else. And of course, he excelled in all parts of the game then you know, striking, lifting, hitting, everything, he excelled in everything, he was a truly marvellous man. But it was his, just his grim determination to get the ball you know, I think that singled him out above everybody else. S H: Yeah. Did he have a great tactical sense of the game? J B: Oh he had. He had. But that came with advancing years then. But there were three different Christy Rings. His career spanned a long time and for the first eight, nine years he was a beautiful young hurler, truly a joy to watch, and he suffered a lot in that time from close marking and by close -- I would say nasty marking. And then for the second period, he was a hard man, he gave back what he got, just as hard as he got he gave back and these were his great days, he was a truly marvellous man then. And then for his third period he to use your rugby cliché, he got his retaliation in first. J B: Yeah. He was, he was -- S H Turned mean? J B: Mm, he was. You had three different Rings. And I mean you hear older people now, of course, only old people remember Ring now, and depending on what county you came from or what club you supported, they remember the Ring that suits their own point of view. S H: Yeah. J B: But there were three. S H: And do you think despite that like obviously he had to develop a certain level of aggression to survive I suppose but, and succeed, but was he basically a fair player? J B: Oh he was, he was. S H: A clean player? J B: He was. God, I saw him doing some wonderful things. In his dying days, you might say when he was on his last legs I saw him and the way he could chase after. I saw him doing this --- a ball going into the corner and he would chase after a fullback and the fullback would be younger and faster and the fullback would reach out and Ring would race out and then just 15 yards before the fullback got to the ball Ring would suddenly vary away from the ball and the fullback would get to the ball and he’d hit it out and Ring would be waiting out 15 yards to catch the fullback’s and score, and I saw him doing that on a couple, what, on at least two occasions. Jack (born circa 1926) grew up in O’Connell Street. His parents were both Northsiders. His father worked for the Post Office. His mother was born in 1888 and grew up on Scoura Hill. (Jack believes the term is a corruption of an Irish word, translating as Hungry Hill.) His father’s mother had a shop at Wherland’s Lane until 1922. He mentions the Bride River and a walk along it called Debtor’s Walk where people who owed money could travel without being seen. He talks briefly about the ghost known as the Foxy Lady, which may have been the image of a young woman killed by machinery in the Sunbeam flax mill. His father served in the British army and he says his neighbourhood had many ex-servicemen; he muses on people’s attitude to the Second World War, and on Irish neutrality. And then I came up to UCC straight from the Leaving Cert. And that was really when I arrived in Cork in '72. So I've been in Cork for, what is that 27 years is it? Good God. Terrifying. SH: Was '72 with the Northern situation in a way, it was almost in the sense of em, you know actual military hostilities and the number of people engaged and riots and demonstrations was almost like, the peak of the troubles, of the modern phase of the troubles in one sense like it's become a lot more sophisticated perhaps, a lot of the military activity since then but it never really has reached a no-go areas and things like that. Was there a sort of feeling that this thing was just going to go on escalating or could go on escalating and possibly engulf the whole of Ireland somehow? TMcC: Well you know, I suppose my own situation was peculiar in that really in 1972 at the age of eighteen I was really only interested in myself and my own poetry you know. Everything else that happened was a very distant second. SH: Was it quite a good feeling to be distant from something like that? TMcC: Well, for me it was absolutely necessary because something terrible had happened. Em, when I was a young man, in fact, I was involved in the Fianna Fáil party which would see itself as mainly as the inheritor of old Sinn Féin, as the Republican party, very anti-Britsh, very anti-English and adamantly and furiously confident that Ulster would become part of Ireland, that the British administration of the six counties was only a temporary arrangement. Em, but you see I 1970 when I was sixteen the arms trial blew up in the face of the Fianna Fáil party and split it. So, em by 1972 when I was 18, really I was utterly and absolutely uncomfortable with the Fianna Fáil party. I suppose the kind of people I hung around with, people like John Freher and George Armstrong of Lismore and Ned Lonegan of Cappoquin and that, these kinds of people, they would have been in the PD wing of Fianna Fáil, the kind of Desmond O'Malley wing, not really the Republican wing you know? And so they were horrified by what had happened you know and believed a lot of the anti-Haughey propaganda of the time. And eh, so when I say I was only interested in my poetry and in myself it was probably a kind of survival mechanism as well, I didn't want to really have to deal with all these problems that arose for Fianna Fáil after the arms trial you know. I describe that time actually, and the year 1973 as well, in the novel I wrote 'Without Power'. It's very much sort a way of recapturing that time you know. Title A name given to the resource Thomas McCarthy: Waterford, UCC, Fianna Fáil Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Tom is a poet from County Waterford, who describes what University College Cork (UCC) was like in the 1970s. He is an admirer of Fianna Fáil and he discusses the party’s politics. He talks about his work and about other poets. Tom was born in Cappoquin, County Waterford in 1954. His mother’s family were heavily involved in Nationalist politics. Cappoquin was contiguous with the Ring Gaeltacht and he spoke Irish to native speakers; a relative of his was recorded by RTE reciting poems in Irish and by a local folklorist. He came to UCC in 1972 and has been in Cork ever since. He was involved with the Fianna Fáil party and wrote a novel based on the party’s history. He describes the party’s reading of Irish history. He talks about the political and social culture of UCC in the 1970s. He was a poet, and after college he became a full-time writer. How would they have related to that, would they have eh, we’ll say fancied themselves left-wing and rebellious but would they really have extended that to any sort of engagement. What was going on there like in protests about the vote? J F: Well yeah, that came into it and one or two of the more radical ones would have gone to down after school to join with the peoples democracy protests at Queens University and in our debating society and other groups. I remember vividly we invited Austin Curry who was a Stormont MP at the time to come and speak to us. And, that was rather a shameful meeting because there was also a very more vociferous Paisleyite element. Not probably most of the students were a political or would have voted Unionists or their parents certainly would have voted Unionists. But, there was a small left-wing element and there was also a small maybe slightly larger Paisleyite element and when Austin Curry came some of the Paisleyite students were or pupils were rather bad-mannered and displayed a Union Jack and asked rather aggressive questions. S H: How did he cope with it? J F: Well he coped with it well enough but I mean the teachers afterwards have us to understand that this had not been one of the more glorious days of the school's liberal reputation. And, I think they were right. S H: Was he already into the Socialist Democratic and Labour Party then? J F: He was a Nationalist MP I think, SDLP hadn’t quite been formed but he was known for his involvement in civil rights. Yeah, and I think that’s my one main memory of the rioting 68 – 69. But, I mean this is a selfish thing to say, I’m thankful that by the time I left school the real bad violence hadn’t started in Belfast. I mean it did affect the next generation of students. Bomb scares or tape on the windowpanes. S H: Would you have been-- J F: Threatening or it was -- the next generation of students found it difficult wearing the school uniform going if they went home certain ways they were a target. That would be quite painful to live through. S H: Would you have been a bit insulated from it in your area say more so then somebody with class difference? J F: To some degree, to some degree, yes but I mean eh, Belfast is still quite a small place. So, even though my earlier movement was unrestricted you know once the bombs stated I’m talking about a little bit later that became something that involved everybody and you couldn’t escape it. Well thankfully I did escape it, you know you knew it was going on. And, yeah, I mean Belfast through the troubles it's funny because people from my background middle class Protestants would often say oh, you could live in Belfast and not know there was trouble going on. And, I know what they mean but certainly in the 70s when the bombing campaign was on you certainly knew there was mayhem, trouble, terrorism whatever you want to call it. And, one could hear gunfire in, I remember hearing that one night in 1970, you know you couldn’t live in Belfast in the 70s and not know that blood was being shed and lives were being destroyed. S H: Sitting here and reality to all that to be living in essentially sharing the same supply station that we have in London or Paris or something and yet have all this craziness going on and not being able to stop it? J F: Well you just you adapted to it, people do and I remember coming back as a student from England I’d see the difference. Soldiers on the streets with loaded weapons, one presumed they were loaded. I’m sure they were, and then being searched going into shops and all of this minor inconvenience. You go back over the water to England, a society that knew nothing about this at that time. That made me as a young man quite angry, upset but you know? Am, being from Madden’s Buildings of course The Glen Rovers was a madness for any budding hurler so we would have played street leagues, we would have played on Glen Rovers under-8’s, under-10’s right up along, so yes hurling was a very, very big part of our lives and even on the street. I do remember being fined two shillings and sixpence at the tender age of eight for playing hurling on Great William O’Brien Street. SH: What a guard came along and he fined you on the spot? BH: Not on the spot no, we had to go to court -- I can remember my father having to take the day off work. SH: Was it embarrassing? BH: Well I was-- I suppose I was, I was terrified. Am, my father was certainly embarrassed along with many of the other. I think there were eight or nine of us before court getting a record at seven years of age but I suppose when you look back at it now, I suppose they could say you know that you’d be proud of what, what you had done, that you were playing your national game and were fined for it you know? He later became a teacher at the school, and he comments on education and on religious life. Brother Higgins (born circa 1956) grew up in Madden’s Buildings, Blackpool. He comments that hurling rather than Gaelic football was the game played on the Northside, and tells a story about being fined in court aged 7 for playing it in the street. He gives some details about his Communion and Confirmation. He talks about the North Mon, about the sport played there and about the teaching of subjects through Irish. Generally, there was a pride in Irish culture and the achievement of the Republic. He talks about the Irish language as a language, its richness and difficulties associated with using it. Returning to the subject of the North Mon, he praises the standard of education he got there. Afterwards he went to a teacher training college, where he was again taught through Irish. He comments on the role of educationalists such as Edmund Rice and Nano Nagle, and he dates the establishment of the North Mon to 1816. He lists some past pupils who have become well-known actors and he comments that the school put on pageants during the 1930s and 1940s. He describes the process of his training as a teacher and a Christian Brother, and he finishes with some comments about religious vocations and the importance of religion in society. Her mother was a professional costume designer. Her father was a stage manager and an actor. She appeared on stage for the first time at the Opera House when she was 7 years old. The family moved to Douglas when she was 4. She talks about her parents’ involvement in theatre. They met while members of a Gilbert and Sullivan group, and another group, Theatre of the South, that put on Summer Revels. She comments that people often joined theatre groups for the social more than the thespian aspect. She herself became involved with Blackrock Players. She comments that Cork people go to shows which reflect both Cork and themselves as Cork people. She talks about the Everyman theatre then based in Father Mathew Street. Most theatre groups are amateur and part-time. She feels that theatregoing was more popular with Cork people in the past and that an audience for plays has been lost. Mary talks about the superstitions associated with theatre, such as not whistling in the dressing room. She recalls a story about a ghostly figure in a showband ballroom. She talks about the fire which burned down the original Opera House building. The opera house site had previously been occupied by the Munster Hall, and then by the Atheneum. She talks about earlier, forgotten theatres of Cork dating from the 1700s, and about The Loft and Father O’Flynn. Her own career has moved from acting to directing to administration. H P: Oh sure that was another ordeal another event we used to organise we used to have filmmakers in from England and everywhere and from Yugoslavia and Denmark and America and they used to come yea and we used to have, we used to organise a parade like St. Patrick’s day parade I have it on video actually the whole parade I have and they would walk in the parade and we had the Civil Defence and all the Majorettes and we had them, who else had we em, the Cork Rose we had Roney Drew we had them all and em Cornel em whats his name Cornel Mc Lindon is it, I can’t think of his name now, he was the fellow that used to fix up the parade for me I think he’s from Wellington Road. MO’M: Glendon. H P: Glendon yea Major Glendon is it. MO'M: I think he was a Colonel I think he was yea. H P: But he used to organise the thing and we used to have St. Finbars pipe band and we used to have all the bands from Carrigaline and Ringaskiddy ea young peoples band we used to have all them buy ea it was great. MO'M: But why did it die off a bit then, ok the festival is still running I know that and it's still very strong because I was at it and I saw the turnout but like you wouldn't have that parade now today. H P: because it would be another event to organise and there wouldn't be enough people on the ground to do it and we used to hold the films in the cameo that them years as well and the place used to be packed and we had the people from the Irish film board down, and ea RTE came down and they came down to take a few minutes of the festival and they stayed for 4 days and filmed it all and ea we had a whole heap of things to do I don't know how we did them but we did. MO'M: Of course it's getting people to do it now today. H P: But it's all on a voluntary basis you know there's no pay. MO'M: And I suppose it's hard to keep people then is it? H P: No the people we have are so involved that they love it so much and when I see films they be some out there foreign and they have a camera and they get an event to film and they have upon it amateur video and that annoys me because it isn't shoddy because I says the word amateur for love of doing it. MO'M: That's true yea. H P: That's only a second-hand kind of a thing you know but em I said to the person behind the camera, actually it's the person behind the camera is the person thinking that makes the film and not the camera. Title A name given to the resource Helen Prout: Film-making, Cinema, Youth Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Helen recalls her life as an amateur film-maker, as a teacher of film-making in Cork, and her involvement in the film festival scene. Helen grew up in Millstreet, where her father’s cousin ran a cinema, through which she developed a love of film. She began making amateur films with a small camera. Her family moved to a farm in County Tipperary, but had to leave, and moved to Cork around 1950. Helen won a film competition in Cork in 1977, and she taught young people in Gurranabraher how to make short films. She and her son, Con, began to liaise with schools to encourage film-making among the pupils. She also set up a festival for showing young people’s film and video. She was awarded the title of Cork Person of the Year in 1980. L H: Em was it due to friends or family? E D: Due to friends really and ea you know we used to in our time in we had a very good couple of bowl players well they would be seeing us that time in Clohroe village we had two prominent very prominent men there em Paddy Cotter and his son Tony and Syril Horrigan was also a great bowl player. In our village, they were living actually a couple of doors away from me. L H: Right. E D: So that's how we grew you know we got to follow the bowling, go out of a Sunday they would be playing scores and I used to go out with my Father watching um and famous roads I remember ea Waterloo and Berrings they were two very famous roads, that’s in my early youth in the 1958/59/60. L H: To a person who is not that familiar with the game how would you describe it, what's the game of it or how is it carried out? E D: Ea well it's basically it starts at one particular point a starting point and there's a finishing point and it's aim is to go to that finishing point in the least number of shots to your opponent. L H: Right what's a score? E D: The length of a score? Ea L H: That's the distance between a and b or whatever? E D: It could consist of a mile and a half it could be a mile and a half usually about 20 shots which would be a mile and a half of road. L H: Even when you were younger would it have been a similar distance? E D: Oh it would have been still the same distance as it is now. L H: And would you have been playing with other kids around the area or would you have been? E D: No we would have been playing with our own friends in the area you know at the time like. L H: Would your own Father have played or? E D: No he never played it, never played it, but followed it all his life yea. L H: Right he would have gone out. E D: Oh he would have gone out following it he would yea he would. L H: And one thing I have come across is that Cork and Armagh seem pretty dominant places in Ireland for it, it's played very little anywhere else is there any reason behind that? E D: Well no not really it started I suppose with the great famous scores between Armagh and Cork you had Danny Mc Farland and Mick Barry they were two famous names Danny Mc Farland was a famous name in Armagh at the time and ea actually it's not called bowels in Armagh it's called bullets they call it bullets in Armagh and I suppose it stent from there really you know going back to 1960s and early 70s, there was some famous all Irelands between Armagh and Cork but now it's getting into parts of eh, Dundalk. Louth and Dublin there playing a bit of it in Dublin now as well but definitely the two famous places are Armagh and Cork. Title A name given to the resource Eddie Daly: Road Bowls Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Eddie plays road bowling. He talks about the sport, about how he became involved in it, and about some of the players and characters associated with it. Eddie (born circa 1949) grew up in Cloghroe, where road bowling was popular and started playing when he was 11. He briefly describes how the sport is played. Cork and Armagh (where it is called ‘bullets’) are the strongholds of the sport but it is being played a little elsewhere. There are underage teams and girls play too. Gambling is a big part of the sport and a player may have several backers who bet on him. He has been living in Carraig na Bhfear for 20 years and is involved in the sport there. He tells a story about player Mick Barry throwing a ball over a viaduct. Apparently I wander off from my home to my Grandmother’s home which was about a half a mile away. I stayed with her until she died and then my aunt; my mother’s sister reared me then until I was around twelve. I then went back home to Friars road to live again CC What is your most vivid memory KD The day that Suttons took fire on the South Mall, I was in town shopping and I met up with a fireman from the Cork Fire Brigade to inform that I was now on duty and whatever I had with me to bring it with me, and leave it where I was and come to the South Mall and help out the extinguishing of the fire at Suttons. CC So what was your exact occupation at the time KD A housewife CC Right ok, where were you born KD I was born in 20 Lower Friars Road in Turners Cross CC Have you lived there all your life KD I lived there all my single life, sorry that’s not true, I was born there in 1942 and I stayed until I was about two, two and a half until I wandered off to my grandmothers and I was there in Evergreen St. until I was about twelve, thirteen. Title A name given to the resource Kay Dunne: Childhood, Opera, Camogie Subject The topic of the resource Life History: Description An account of the resource Kay was born in 1942, in Friars Road, Turners Cross. Her mother died when she was a toddler and she went to live with her grandmother and was afterwards raised by her aunt, before moving back to the family home when she was about 12 years old. She lived at home until she got married, in 1966, after which she and her husband lived in Belgrave Avenue on the Northside. Her husband was in the Irish Army. In 1981 the couple began to manage Sundays Well Boating and Tennis Club, in The Mardyke. She talks about her love of opera, both collecting recordings and attending live concerts. Kay was involved in the auxiliary fire service and was in a guard of honour for President Kennedy during his visit to Cork in 1962. (She earlier comments about viewing a fire at Sutton’s warehouse on the South Mall in 1963 and being asked to help.) As a child, she developed a great interest in playing camogie, and she is still involved in the administration of the game. She recalls her playing uniform and changing her clothes at the side of the ditch. G G: Tshombe’s army was mainly controlled by mercenaries and the mercenaries came from all over the world, mercenaries from New Zealand, Australia and South America. They were mercenaries proper, mad for a fight, to fight was their lifestyle, you know. We found that they were great, they were white number one. When I went into Luena and took it over, there were Congolese army just on the edge of town and there was a Belgian in charge of it. Jack -- can’t remember his name now, Jack something. But the first night that I was there, I went over into his camp, I rang him up first on the phone, on the army line and I said who I was and that we were here to do a job to stop killing and he said ‘that’s my policy too, in taking this place we killed only a half dozen in the place’. So I went over into his camp, sitting at the table and I said for a start off ‘I have no gun on me, no gun on me, have you?’, ‘I always carry a gun’ he says, you know. I said ‘I wouldn’t like to talk to you with the gun there’, so he took the gun and he said here you have it he says, so that changed that, it went pleasantly then, we had comfort there but if any bit of trouble started I went to him or he went to me. S H: He was a Belgian was he? G G: A Congolese born Belgian, he was a gentleman, only a gentleman. No bother getting on with him, as I said they cleared that area now of the local Congolese tribe and kept the killing down to the minimum anyway. That was the rule. Title A name given to the resource George Glendon: Irish Army, World Wars, The Congo Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource George was born in Slievenamon, Co. Tipperary in 1915. He served in as a commandant in the Irish army from 1935 to 1971. His parents married in 1895. George's father was a serviceman in the British army. Both George's father and eldest brother fought on the western front during the First World War. His brother was captured and held a prisoner of war until fighting ceased. On his return from the war, his brother joined the IRA's 3rd Tipperary battalions flying column and was heavily involved till the end of the Civil War. George speaks of the societal and technological change that happened in his early life. How most people lived on credit and those who were subsistent farmer like his family had little to no social life. He mentions women performing physical tasks on the farmers due to not being able to afford male labourers. He speaks of attending a pattern day at a holy well in county Waterford and mentions that other calendar customs weren't really observed George was in involved with the Local Defense force before joining the regular army in 1935. He speaks of the lead up to the second world war and how he did not see it coming.
