Tommy Rooney: Second City Jazzband, Cork Academy School of Music
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Tommy Rooney was born in 1931. He was reared in Crosshaven and was the eldest of nine. His father’s family were from Dublin. He joined the army in 1945 at the age of 14 and remained in the service for 12 years. He played music during some of that time with civilian bands. After the army, he played with Donny Collins in Limerick for 9 years and with Michael O’Callaghan for 7 years. He then formed The Second City Jazz Band and played with them for 20 years. Recently he has begun teaching music at the Cork Academy School of Music in Sunbeam industrial estate. He married one of the Creedon's, a well-known sporting family from Shandon Street.
Tommy talks about his life as a musician. His early days in the army as a teenager. He talks about the very start of the showband era, the bands and Cork venues, such as the Arcadia. The experience of playing in Protestant halls in Northern Ireland.

Sean Lucey, Terry McCarthy: Blackpool, Dixies Showband
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Seán Lucy was born in 1936. Seán is from a family of four. He started work as a radio and television repairman in 1950, before becoming a professional musician in 1960. He played the clarinet. He played with the Butter Exchange Band, a brass and reed band that started in the late 1940s.
Terry McCarthy was born in 1948. Terry is from a family of eight. He became a stonecutter in 1963. He joined a band in 1968 and began a career in music; he was a vocalist. Both were educated by the Christian Brothers at the North Monastery.
Seán and Terry talk about the Irish showband scene, and their band, the Dixies. The band started playing Trad Jazz as the Dixieland band, copying English bands who copied American bands. Terry had been in a band called The Sunset; joined the Dixies in 1985. The Dixies went professional in 1961, toured England and America. Showbands had to leave the country during Lent and play elsewhere. They identify the heyday of the showbands as being approximately from 1965 to 1971. Seán’s favourite venue in Cork was the Arcadia, in Lower Road, later the CIE club, with audiences of 3,000. They played in Northern Ireland before The Troubles began.
Rory Gallagher played support to The Dixies when he was very young. Terry saw Rory’s band Taste play their first gig, at the Cavern Club, Leitrim Street.
The arrival of discos killed the live music scene.
They discuss the extent of the Northside area.
They topped the bill at Carnegie Hall, New York in 1964. The band has an entry in the Guinness Encyclopaedia of Popular Music.

Seán Lane: Blarney Street, Butchers, Bowling,
Life History:
Seán Lane was born in 1942. His parents were both from Blarney Street, where he was raised. His father was a bacon butcher.
He talks about his childhood. Children were always on the lookout for any opportunity to make a penny, such as cow-herding or picking fruit. There was a great community spirit. People made do with allotments and bird-catching, they kept pigs, hens or cows. Some traders collected household waste as pig-feed. Children played in the streets but once television came in the 1960s, they stayed indoors.
He tells a funny story about leading a horse through a pub. He describes playing bowls, learning to dance in the dance halls in the late 1950s. He remembers some of the street characters from his childhood.
Seán’s father later had a shop and he pickled meat there; poor people ate offal bones, which had quite a lot of meat still on them. He recalls the various slaughterhouses around Blarney Street.

Peggy Kelleher: The Lough, Marriage, World War 2
Life History:
Peggy (born 1930s) grew up in Hartland's Road, near The Lough. She was an only child. Her father, William Power, from County Waterford; he worked at the Munster Arcade and lived through the Burning of Cork by the Black and Tans in 1920; he was involved in the old IRA and the War of Independence. Her parents married in 1928. Her mother, Gertrude Murphy, came from Youghal, and worked in the Post Office; she was an independent woman whom Peggy describes as a feminist.
Local shops were almost like community centres, where news was exchanged. She remembers a house shop run by the Carey sisters, and a local butcher that sold meat displayed uncovered.
She talks about childhood games, being watched over by mothers, and early bedtimes. Reading books was popular in her house.
Her father worked for 40 years without illness by died from cancer at 57.
Gas for cooking at home was rationed because of the Second World War. She recalls the jobs she used to do around the house as a child.
She recalls a story her father told about a marriage match.
Peggy describes the meal times of the day and what was eaten. The meat had to be bought fresh each day. The only fruit and vegetables used were those which happened to be in season. Fish had to be eaten every Friday; sometimes it was dried, salted fish.
She recalls childhood games; boys and girls played separately.
She went to a private school and then to commercial college, and ended up working as a dentist’s assistant. She got married when she was about 23.
She recalls teenage dances, hanging around in groups rather than as couples, and dances monitored by nuns. Girls expected to be married by the time they were 25.
Peggy compares the lives of modern children to that of her generation and wishes the present generation learned that happiness was simple and not based on materialism.
She recalls a number of pranks she played as a child.

Pat Walsh: Barrack Street, Custom House, Dundanion Castle, Elizabeth Fort, Railways, Sculpture Factory, Trams, Transport,
Cork's Built Heritage
Pat Walsh talks about some of the transport histories of Cork, including the railway and tramway systems and their associated infrastructure; and about the history of Elizabeth Fort.
He talks about the channels of the River Lee within the city and the bridges that cross the river. He recalls an accident in 1965 when a ship failed to anchor and crashed into one of the bridges. He remembers a fatal accident in 1945 when a steam train collided with a horse and cart.
He talks about the old buildings of the south of the city, and about his own developing interest in local history. He remembers Barrack Street and he talks about what Elizabeth Fort meant to him as a child and about its general history, particularly during the Siege of Cork in 1690

Noel Magnier: Gerald Griffin Street, Shops, Box Cars,
Life History:
Noel has written a book about growing up in Cork in the 1940s and 1950s, called Is That You, Boy? He was born (1939) and reared in Gerald Griffin Street. He has 4 siblings. He recalls the shops and businesses on the street.
Denny’s cellar was a piggery that gave much local employment.
He recalls sports such as bowl playing.
He remembers the various shops and businesses of Shandon Street. Every house had a ‘box car’, a wheeled cart for carrying provisions home.
Shops sold kindling wood in bundles, and coal was sold by the peck, and carried home on one’s back. Families put medals into gas meters instead of coins; people also made sawdust fires using old barrels.
Noel talks a little about some of the characters he knew. Men who returned from working in England were called Dagenham Yanks.
He talks about the Lido cinema and the serial films shown there.
He recalls the milk and cake shops of Cork; and the food they used to eat every day, including sheep’s head soup.
Noel recalls Wren festivities on St Stephen’s Day and later, and sings a verse from a song they sang. He recalls some of the popular songs of his youth, such as “Saint Teresa of the Roses”. They used to eat Pickle: pigs’ blood and water.

Michael Murphy: Worklife; Murphy's Brewery; Childhood
Life History:
Michael was born in 1941. He was born in Francis Street. He had 6 brothers and 5 sisters. His earliest memory is of his grandfather’s funeral, with a hearse pulled by two horses, in 1945. His mother’s pregnancies and the arrival of newborn children was not discussed. His children’s clothes were passed on to a neighbour’s child. He recalls the practice of buying a habit for a dead person.
His father (b. 1910) started work at the age of 10 at Murphy's bacon factory on Evergreen St.
Michael’s best friend was a Jewish boy, Isaac Charger.
He went to the Savoy cinema, dancing in Francis Hall and the Arcadia, drinking in O’Riordan’s, Merchant’s Quay. He went to confession after the pub; the owner gave him tea leaves to chew to take away the smell of drink.
He started working in Murphy’s brewery in 1959 and rose through the company.

Mary Marshall: Blackpool, Childhood, Hunting,
Life History:
Mary grew up in Thomas Davis Street, Blackpool. Both her parents were from Blackpool. Her mother liked to use Grand Parade library, and her father was an avid reader who told stories from Greek mythology. At the time the area bounded onto the countryside and there were many country people there.
She mentions some shops and businesses in the area, such as Mrs Tobin’s shop, Molly Howe’s pub, May Rogers’ shop, Edwards’ dressmakers and a neighbour who repaired radios. She played in Dan Duggan’s field.
Her father kept dogs and used to go otter hunting.
As a child she moved from Saint Vincent’s school to the North Presentation.
The family of Gypsy Lee, a fortune teller, lived nearby; she used to make paper flowers.
During the 1950s animals used to be herded through the streets. Alice Fray collected household waste for pigs. Jackie Cremin, of Spring Lane, had a piggery.
After hunting everybody would go back to the pub (pubs closed at 7 o’clock then).
She sings a song that her father used to sing, called ‘Scoura Hill’.

Marie Crean: South Parish, Cinemas, Black and Tan’s
Life History:
Marie was born (in the 1950s) and reared in High Street, in the South Parish, off Douglas Street; she thinks the street was formerly Quarry Lane. Some of her area was altered to make a new road. She went to school in South Presentation.
She recalls picking blackberries and slogging apples. There were few cars and everybody walked everywhere. As a child, she travelled a lot with her family on the train.
She talks about her early working life. She worked for Hanlon’s fish merchants.
Marie remembers her old neighbourhood and how some of it was demolished, both houses and shops, particularly Jackson’s Terrace.
Some men in her neighbourhood were involved in the War of Independence and the Civil War. She tells the story of the Black and Tan’s searching for them at a funeral.
Young people went courting on the disused Bandon railway line.
She worked making altar breads, with the Reparation Nuns.
She tells a funny story about how a corpse was washed and the water was thrown after the hearse afterwards.
She mentions several cinemas in Cork and recalls that The Savoy cinema had a great organist.

Margaret Farmer, Catherine McCarthy, Helen Donovan: The Emergency; The Black and Tans;
Life History;
Margaret remembers that her father used to shout “Up the Mollies” when he had drink taken. [Note: These particular Mollies were agitators controlled by Joseph Devlin MP in opposition to William O’Brien]. She recalls the days of the Black and Tans; on her Communion day a bomb went off in Cork, this was the Blackpool Bombing where several RIC officers were killed, and the tram she was in was stopped and passengers were taken off. She also talks about a raid by the Black And Tans on a neighbours house. They talk briefly about historical Irish figures, including President Seán T O’Kelly, who they say was nicknamed “The Leprechaun”. Margaret recounts that Noonan’s Road is named after two of her cousins killed by the Black and Tans. She talks about rationing during the war and the difficulties of using flour. Tea could be made from fried, grated carrot. Coal was carried along in a boxcar, which had two wheels and was pulled by too long handles. She talks briefly about “the glimmer man”, an official who checked houses for using rationed gas. She sings a verse of “The Night the Goat Broke Loose on Grand Parade”. She remembers being issued with gas masks during the Second World War; and the interviewees recall air raid sirens going off in Cork, and the locations of several air raid shelters. She sings a verse of a song about rationing [adapted from the song “Bless Em All”]. She finishes by singing a verse of a song beginning with “My lovely rose has lost its crimson gold…”
Margaret made a reference to the television, her son Donal Farmer, played the part of the priest in the series "Glenroe".

Cork, Ireland, 1920s-2000s
Margaret Newman: Greenmount, Cures, Working Life,
Life History:
Margaret (born circa 1920) grew up in Greenmount, near The Lough. There were 4 in the family; her father had passed away and her mother, Kate, went out to work.
She got cocoa and buns at her primary school. She tells a story about finding out that American tourists visited St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and gave money to people so she went there to collect some even though it was a Protestant church.
Because her mother worked she and her sister did chores around the house.
When she was 14 she got a job cleaning a house; she describes the work involved. She then got a job in McKechnie’s cleaners. She talks about going dancing during the Second World War, and Cork city in a blackout.
She talks about how people behaved in her time and how they behave today.
She tells a story about an elderly woman who put a hot poker into a jug of porter and drank it as a cure. The woman’s husband made herbal cures.
She remembers walks around Cork, and where lovers used to meet. She talks about minding children, and children’s behaviour today.
She tells a funny story about going into a mausoleum in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral.
She talks about her mother, who was a caring and charitable woman.
She used to make Christmas puddings and Chester cakes (also known as Donkey’s Gudge).
Note: This is one of 4 interviews conducted with Margaret.
