Tom Jones: Shandon Street, Emigration, Childhood
Life History:
Tom was born circa 1950 in a building at the bottom of Shandon Street.
He remembers watching the Cork Opera House on fire in 1955. He recalls childhood games and explains the game of Kick the Can and Pitch and Toss. He talks about the nature of relationships between parents and children.
At 16 he went to London and began to educate himself, finishing up in America. He talks about how Cork has changed. He remembers what the allotments were like, and collecting turf in a pram.
He explains how children could get into soccer games free if they pretended to be with a man, who was often a stranger. He recalls a shop called The Pantry, in Blackpool, where he had gudge cake and rasa [raspberry juice]. Youngsters caught tiny fish in bags and took them home.

Mick Moriarty: Barbershops, Fashion, Childhood
Life History;
Mick has spent his life in the hairdressing trade. He talks about changes in the trade and recounts some stories from his working life.
Mick is known as ‘The Baldy Barber’. He was born in Ballincollig in 1948. His father was a hairdresser and had opened his first shop in 1937. He comments on the population explosion in Ballincollig between the time he left and the present day.
As a child, he swam in a pool called Hell Hole, and played marbles (known as Glassy Alleys). There were also two gangs who fought each other, the Broad Lane Gang and the Hatton’s Alley Gang.
He talks about the emergence of long hairstyles in the 1960s and says that a number of barbershops in Waterford closed down as a result.
He describes the cost of a haircut and of running his business over the years. He used to work early in the morning to serve night workers coming off their shifts.
He tells some funny stories about awkward or amusing situations with customers.

Mary Marshall: Blackpool, Childhood, Hunting,
Life History:
Mary grew up in Thomas Davis Street, Blackpool. Both her parents were from Blackpool. Her mother liked to use Grand Parade library, and her father was an avid reader who told stories from Greek mythology. At the time the area bounded onto the countryside and there were many country people there.
She mentions some shops and businesses in the area, such as Mrs Tobin’s shop, Molly Howe’s pub, May Rogers’ shop, Edwards’ dressmakers and a neighbour who repaired radios. She played in Dan Duggan’s field.
Her father kept dogs and used to go otter hunting.
As a child she moved from Saint Vincent’s school to the North Presentation.
The family of Gypsy Lee, a fortune teller, lived nearby; she used to make paper flowers.
During the 1950s animals used to be herded through the streets. Alice Fray collected household waste for pigs. Jackie Cremin, of Spring Lane, had a piggery.
After hunting everybody would go back to the pub (pubs closed at 7 o’clock then).
She sings a song that her father used to sing, called ‘Scoura Hill’.

Liam Foley: Blackpool, Showbands, Arcadia
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Liam is originally from the Northside, from Great William Street in Blackpool. His whole family were musical, and even though his father worked as a cabinet-maker, he and the rest of the family were very keen on playing music at home. He went to Blackpool National School, Commons Road, where corporal punishment was the norm; the building was later demolished.
Liam talks about his experience of the showband scene. He tells a funny story about a gig where the marquee tent blew down on the band in a storm. He had a natural musical ability and settled first on playing the drums and afterwards the guitar, which became his favoured instrument. Showbands were prohibited from playing during Lent, and travelled to London to play; some of them approached a bishop for aid, but he closed the door in their faces. The bands spent half an hour playing a particular artist’s hits, such as Elvis Presley, The Shadows. The bands were usually given a meal before playing, but sometimes not much of one, and they had to hang around a cold ballroom before playing. Bands were comprised of 8 or 9 instruments, and they could play for 5 hours at a time. The rise of the discos put an end to the showband scene. Audience behaviour and clothing styles at ballrooms. The story of The Devil appearing at ballrooms; of a ghost at the Arcadia Ballroom.

Liam Foley: The war of Independence, Corporal Punishment, Music
Life History;
Liam is a musician and he discusses his introduction to playing, as well as talking about his family and his schooldays.
Liam was born in 1940 in Water Lane. His father, John, was a cabinet maker, who also liked to play music, and could play accordion, mandolin and piano.
He didn’t like school, where one teacher used a cane on the pupils; some parents accepted corporal punishment but others attacked some teachers; he tells a story about getting his father to frame a picture to win favour with a teacher who still continued to hit him.
Liam tells a story about his mother avoiding a hand grenade thrown at British soldiers during the War of Independence, and her hearing the shots that killed Tomás MacCurtain [in 1920]. When his father was a young man a barbershop he worked in was raided by the Black and Tans and he had a gun held to his face. He tells the story of an uncle, Eggar Isherwood, who escaped a planned execution.
He talks about picking up music, learning to play the drums by listening to jazz records and taking up the guitar. He sings and plays some brief part on guitar to illustrate musical styles for the interviewer.

Johnny Chris Kelleher: The Evening Echo, Schooldays, Tuberculosis
Life History:
Johnny Chris was born in 1929 in Fair Lane, later called Wolfe Tone Street. His mother, Mary Margaret Kelleher (1901 - 1970) was married twice; her first husband died of TB in 1924; she had to get a job selling newspapers to support her family. His father was Tommy Kelleher; he later lost his legs. His sister lost an arm in an accident at O’Gorman’s hat factory. Johnny Chris still sold newspapers into his 80s, to keep agile and to meet people.
He lists some of the old lanes of the Northside. He describes the housing on Corbett’s Lane. The areas of Shandon Street and Ballymacthomas were close to the country, and men worked as cattle drovers for farmers, bringing cattle to fairs in the county. Without a social welfare system, people turned their hands to all kinds of menial work. There was nevertheless a good quality of life.
Johnny Chris talks about people’s sports and past-times. He praises the rise in the standard of living but laments the loss of a sense of community. The character of the Northside was formed by social housing and the movement of masses of people who lived side by side to new housing there, again side by side. He talks about the street names and the lanes of Cork.
He discusses his schooling and the teaching of the Irish language.
Johnny Chris recalls the editions of the Evening Echo newspaper printed during World War II, and his working life selling the newspaper. How he heard about the death of Christy Ring; telling Taoiseach Jack Lynch the news. The different newspapers reflected people’s political persuasions; the Echo was for working people.
He talks about Blackpool, its residents and industries.
He recalls the North Infirmary, and how it was used by people; how his father had a leg amputated there. He remembers hearing about his sister’s industrial accident.
He worked for Cork Corporation. People didn’t really take holidays. Johnny Chris then describes working life at The Cork Examiner newspaper, and how the Evening Echo was distributed.
How drisheen and tripe were eaten is also discussed.
He recalls Father O’Flynn, who had a method to cure stammering; the BBC made a documentary about him in 1948; he went over to help King George VI.
He relates a funny story about the Corporation making and storing coffins in case of any local bombing casualties during World War II; they were gradually stolen and sold on to undertakers for money to buy drink. He tells another story about Whacker, a local character.

Frances McCarthy and Betty O’Mahony: The Dixies, Christy O'Mahony
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Frances has always lived on the Northside. She was born in Poulraddy, went to school in North Presentation school. When she was seven she moved to Ballyvolane and went to school at St Patrick’s College, Gardiner’s Hill, and Mayfield Community School. After she married she lived in Fairhill, and then in Tivoli. (The other interviewee, Betty O’Mahony, is her mother.)
Frances talks about her father, Christy, who was a musician with The Dixies showband. She describes the extent of the Northside area, which she says consists of Fairhill, Churchfield, Farranree, and Blackpool.

Eileen Jones: Blackpool, Shawlies, Sunbeam,
Life History:
Eileen Jones (b. 1931) was born in Millfield Cottages. When she was 4 years old her family moved to Welsh’s Lane in Blackpool; members of her extended family lived nearby. Her mother was born in 1896. Her father was a builder’s labourer.
There was no secondary school in Blackpool, but some students could stay on in primary school. She left at 14. She praised a teacher, Miss Hourigan, who gave the class a love of the ritual of the mass, and of basic maths and arithmetic, which stood to them in later life.
Eileen worked in the Sunbeam factory, and in Cork Spinning Company. She later got a job in Roches Stores, and she tells the story of how she came to get chosen for the job.
She talks in detail about the neighbourhood of Welsh’s Lane; how visiting strangers were quizzed. Children played out all day, their meals served according to the time kept by a local factory siren.
She recalls some of the words of the rhymes they sang while skipping. She lists the names of the lanes she knew in her youth.
Mentions that Kilcully graveyard had a lot of Traveller graves [Interviewee calls the Travellers ‘gypsies’]
She remembers the names of local shops; and The Co-Op where you earned stamps to exchange for goods.
She talks about a savings bank in St Mary’s Hall; it was a shilling to join.
Eileen remembers the clothes women wore before the war: shawls, kitchen aprons, petticoats. Her grandmother wore a black shawl; Traveller women wore fawn and brown plaid shawls. She tells a story about a woman who collected shawls from the deceased when they were laid out.
When she was born she was not expected to live and was taken close care of. She tells the story of her being christened with a name chosen by the priest.
She worked in the Sunbeam factory. Her supervisor lead prayers during the day. She didn’t like the portrayal of the workers in “The Sunbeam Girls”. The women workers sang as they worked.
Eileen also recalls bonfire night, drinking ‘razza’ and listening to people singing. Workers could go for baths in the Sunbeam factory; few people had baths in their houses.

Denis P. Long: Working Life; Balckpool; Austrailia
Life History;
Denis grew up in Blackpool. His father was a train driver.
He worked for the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) but wanted to earn better money and went to Australia in the 1950s. He tells a funny story about visiting a rocket range and meeting someone who recognised him from Cork.
He describes Blackpool as having been made up of numerous lanes and observes that its name derived from it being a boggy place full of streams. He comments that the River Lee is said to claim at least one life by drowning a year. There were two holy wells at Sunday’s Well; another called Lady’s Well at Leitrim Street.
He talks briefly about Poulraddy Harbour, Micah’s Harbour, and Corkeran’s Quay. The latter two places had grand names but were insignificant. He sings a verse of a song about the latter called “The Cruise of the Mary Jane” and a song that a teacher made Denis remembers that there was an incident with a harbour ferry in the 1940s which lost its steering and caused great panic.
He recalls the sports played in Cork, including bird-catching. Denis wrote a book called The Spirit of the Glen, about Glen Rovers GAA club.
There was a flood in Blackpool in 1935, and he recounts a funny story about a boy floating by on a sofa.
He remembers that a local man developed a way to generate his own electricity using water power. He was a teacher; under the system then, school monitors could become teachers without passing a teaching exam.

Breda Sheehan: Blackpool, Childhood games, Lido cinema, Spring Lane.
Life History: Blackpool, Childhood games, Ellis’s, Goulding's, Lido cinema, Spring Lane.
Breda grew up in Spring Lane, off Thomas Davis Street, Blackpool. She grew up with five sisters. Her father was a soldier in the Irish Army and was away a lot.
She grew up in a row of cottages that she believes dated back to the Seventeenth Century. People rented their houses until the 1950s, when they began to buy them. In the 1970s, the area bounded both the city and the countryside. It was also an industrial area, with Goulding’s fertilizer factory and Ellis’s gravel yard. During the 1950s men queued at Gouldings looking for casual work.
She lists the games and pastimes she played as a child: catching stones, marbles (‘glassy allies’) and scraps (scrapbooks). She names the lanes around Thomas Davis Avenue, which residents called by its old name, Foster’s Lane. Neighbours looked out for each other’s children and for each other.
She tells a story about looking for apples at the Ellis family house, nearby.
The Lido cinema in Blackpool showed episodic films, which she loved to see with her grandmother; she describes the seating inside.
She talks about how Blackpool has changed, and how the lanes have gone or been renamed and the old shops have gone. Changes came in the way shopping was done, with the arrival of city centre supermarkets, while the lanes were replaced with new housing. Yet she thinks that Spring Lane has basically remained unchanged; she remembers that there was an orchard behind the lane, which was replaced by Glen Rovers GAA club.
She comments on Blackpool Post office, about which there has been a local dispute; she mentions that one site of the post office had been the home of Thomas MacCurtain, Mayor of Cork, who had been shot during the War of Independence. She mentions Madden’s Buildings as being among the oldest social housing in Cork, built in 1885 [1886].
She comments that demolishing Blackpool’s lanes meant removing people and that its community spirit declined as a result; she notes the arrival of immigrants.

Breda St Ledger: Blackpool, Childhood Games, Family Life,
Life History:
Breda (b. 1949) grew up in Thomas Davis Avenue, in Blackpool. The houses were built new in the 1960s. They lived with a relative who told her and her brother scary stories. She went to the North Presentation Convent school.
She talks briefly about the practice of grandmothers’ rearing a child of the family.
Her brothers seasoned chestnuts to play conkers. The girls played scraps – making cut out shapes. She says that children were never bored and had lots to do, like picking blackberries, or making a place to swim in; she contrasts them with today’s bored teenagers.
Breda talks about some of the memorable characters who lived in her area.
She remembers the gas man coming to collect money for their use of gas, but who might repay money, too. Food was bought on a daily basis, and her mother paid for things on a weekly basis, having an account in a number of shops; these included Dunleas, Miss Healy's, Cantys, Dan Lyons, Mary Welsh, Kingston's, O’Leary’s butcher's shop.
Clothes were sent from relatives in America. The family was well fed but there was nothing extra.
