Tina Noonan: Blackpool; Sunbeam; Childhood **Restricted Content**
Life History;
Tina’s father was from Blackpoool, and her mother was from Cove St. She has 8 siblings. She went to Blackpool School, which was since demolished; there they used to be given milk and buns.
Tina recalls some of a skipping rhyme she used to sing as a child. Her first job was in the Sunbeam factory, when she was about 14.
She remembers holidaying in Youghal, travelling there by train. As a child she swapped scrapbooks with other girls.
She talks about children’s lives now and as they were when she was growing up. She remembers pulling apples from the trees at the Sunbeam factory. Funerals today compared to long ago.

Pete Newman: Shandon Street, Unemployment, Machoness,
Life History:
Pete Newman (also known as Pete Duffy) was born in 1945. He grew up in Orrery Road off Cathedral Road. His relatives came from Broad Lane and moved up to Gurranabraher.
Cyclists going up Shandon Street used to hold on to the back of buses, which pulled them uphill. He recalls that some men could step off a moving bus and land perfectly still on the road. He remembers as a child being in a convoy of steering cars.
Pete says 90% of men during the 1950s were unemployed. He talks about the lanes of Cork; many had cobblers in them who were disabled men from the World Wars. Idle men played cards at street corners. He recalls pawn shops, and trying to pay for a watch in one of them, and remembers the free boots scheme. Women earned money at Christmas by plucking turkeys. He remembers the music his parents liked and the arrival of American rock and roll music. The Northside was very close to the countryside and country people came into the Butter Market.
Pete makes a number of references to men’s macho behaviour: whistling, smoking, swearing.

Noreen Cronin: Shandon, The North Infirmary, Childhood
Life History:
Noreen grew up in a tenement in Dominick Street next to Shandon in the early 1950s. She went to the North Pres School and worked at the North Infirmary. Her mother used to deliver babies in the area and helped to wash and lay out the dead. Her father worked in the Asphalt Company and had an extra job at the Opera House.
Noreen remembers American tourists giving her money in Shandon because she looked ‘real’ Irish with her red hair and freckles.
She talks about the Firkin Crane and the Butter Factory.
Noreen also mentions working sewing caps and hats in O'Gorman's factory and how the men all drank tea out of jam jars.
She recalls shops in Shandon Street; Spithere’s where they used to get salted butter and they’d bring a jug to get milk direct from the churn; Paddy Twomeys for offal and bodice and tails, Ormonde and Aherns where you got bread for 50c, JJ Welch’s sold perfume and face cream and operated a book system and Buckleys which sold dresses and uniforms
Noreen goes on to describes the milk and cake shops they went to. Mentions An Stád on Leitrim Street and Nosey O’Keefe’s where they bought sweets.
Recalls Jerry Healy's pawn shops and the return of the Sunday suits on a Monday.
Noreen describes how her grandmother, sister, herself worked at The North Infirmary.
She remembers the childhood games they played, skippy, picky, rounders, release, marbles, spin the bottle, Bob and Joan’s and the songs they used to sing whilst playing. Swimming at the Mardyke and the Lee. At that time children could be arrested for playing football on the street.
Delivering babies and the washing and laying out of the dead and wakes.
Describes the household chores: washing the ware and old washing boards.
She also talks about her aunts going for half pints in the snug. Mentions Jack Brown’s pub in Dominick Street and Nellie Naughton and Paddy Donoghue who sang there.
Recalls the food they ate; tripe, Drisheen, offal, hack bone and stews. They drank beef tea when sick. Rasa and currant cake at Christmas.
Talks about the night the Opera House burned down.
Ceilis and old-time waltzing, and watching The Dixielanders (The Dixies) at St Francis Hall. Watching other Big bands at The Arcadia.
Bonfire Night and drinking Rasa and orange juice.
Travelling on the Inisfallen and emigration.
Cork prisons and a man being arrested for stealing a loaf of bread.

Noel Magnier: Gerald Griffin Street, Shops, Box Cars,
Life History:
Noel has written a book about growing up in Cork in the 1940s and 1950s, called Is That You, Boy? He was born (1939) and reared in Gerald Griffin Street. He has 4 siblings. He recalls the shops and businesses on the street.
Denny’s cellar was a piggery that gave much local employment.
He recalls sports such as bowl playing.
He remembers the various shops and businesses of Shandon Street. Every house had a ‘box car’, a wheeled cart for carrying provisions home.
Shops sold kindling wood in bundles, and coal was sold by the peck, and carried home on one’s back. Families put medals into gas meters instead of coins; people also made sawdust fires using old barrels.
Noel talks a little about some of the characters he knew. Men who returned from working in England were called Dagenham Yanks.
He talks about the Lido cinema and the serial films shown there.
He recalls the milk and cake shops of Cork; and the food they used to eat every day, including sheep’s head soup.
Noel recalls Wren festivities on St Stephen’s Day and later, and sings a verse from a song they sang. He recalls some of the popular songs of his youth, such as “Saint Teresa of the Roses”. They used to eat Pickle: pigs’ blood and water.

Michael Creedon: Bradley's
North Main Street, Cork
Michael Creedon relates some of the history pertaining to Bradley's, a 4th generation shop established in 1850 on North Main Street. He discusses the changes that have taken place during that time in the area and the importance of supporting local businesses to keep the character of Cork City local.
Bradley’s off-licence and footsore, on North Main Street, was established in 1850 and is currently in the 4th generation of family ownership. Michael Creedon, current owner of Bradley's, discusses the history of the shop within the family dating back to his grandfather (the third generation back from him) and the changing character of the street as well as Cork City over time. He states that the shop started out pasteurizing and selling milk and would have had two other locations on Shear Street and Douglas Street. His grandfather (Michael) and his great-uncle (Frank) worked together in the business before it passed to his uncle who first introduced the notion of the business as a food shop as well. From there Michael discusses his own memories as a child and the close relationship his family had with the shop, including enquiring after the shop at Christmas almost as one would a person. He relates a memory, at the approximate age of five, wherein they kept fire lighters within the door of their shop on bonfire night. He states there would have been no pressure from the family to take on the direction of the shop but that, among his siblings, he was the most suited for it. Finally, the conversation moves on to his own perception of North Main Street and Cork City over time. Michael expresses his regrets that the localised nature of the city is diminishing in favour of large shopping centres, citing the construction of the pedestrian bridge from Popes Quay to Cornmarket Street as well as free parking in other locations in the city as drawing away foot traffic from local businesses. He states that because he is a small business, he makes an effort to support other small businesses in the products that he offers for sale and emphasises that people who care for Cork should support Cork and appreciate the historic quarter.

Mary O’Donovan
Mary is an elderly woman who recalls her life history. She feels that her memory is not so good, but she clearly recalls personal rather than more general events. Mary was born (circa 1901) in Sarsfield Terrace. Her aunt was ‘a lady’s companion’ to the wife of a colonel who lived in Sunday’s Well. Her grandmother wore a black cape and a black bonnet. The family moved to Hibernian Buildings, and then to Church Avenue, Chapel Hill. Her mother was a dressmaker. As a young woman she worked as a shirtmaker in Dwyer’s factory, and then met her husband. (She states later that she got married in 1922). She and her husband lived with her mother before the corporation gave her a house in Farranferris Avenue. She remembers a fragment of a skipping rhyme she sang as a child. She briefly describes the religious ceremony of ‘churching’, which she describes in a positive light. Mary worked for Tomás Mac Curtain, the Lord Mayor of Cork who was shot by the Black and Tans, and she describes her last day at work with him before he was killed. She sings a verse of ‘Wrap The Green Flag Round Me, Boys’, which a street singer had sung earlier in the day before Mac Curtain was shot. As a Girl Guide she joined others saying the Rosary outside a prison in Cork where Republican prisoners were on hunger strike.

Eileen Jones: Blackpool, Shawlies, Sunbeam,
Life History:
Eileen Jones (b. 1931) was born in Millfield Cottages. When she was 4 years old her family moved to Welsh’s Lane in Blackpool; members of her extended family lived nearby. Her mother was born in 1896. Her father was a builder’s labourer.
There was no secondary school in Blackpool, but some students could stay on in primary school. She left at 14. She praised a teacher, Miss Hourigan, who gave the class a love of the ritual of the mass, and of basic maths and arithmetic, which stood to them in later life.
Eileen worked in the Sunbeam factory, and in Cork Spinning Company. She later got a job in Roches Stores, and she tells the story of how she came to get chosen for the job.
She talks in detail about the neighbourhood of Welsh’s Lane; how visiting strangers were quizzed. Children played out all day, their meals served according to the time kept by a local factory siren.
She recalls some of the words of the rhymes they sang while skipping. She lists the names of the lanes she knew in her youth.
Mentions that Kilcully graveyard had a lot of Traveller graves [Interviewee calls the Travellers ‘gypsies’]
She remembers the names of local shops; and The Co-Op where you earned stamps to exchange for goods.
She talks about a savings bank in St Mary’s Hall; it was a shilling to join.
Eileen remembers the clothes women wore before the war: shawls, kitchen aprons, petticoats. Her grandmother wore a black shawl; Traveller women wore fawn and brown plaid shawls. She tells a story about a woman who collected shawls from the deceased when they were laid out.
When she was born she was not expected to live and was taken close care of. She tells the story of her being christened with a name chosen by the priest.
She worked in the Sunbeam factory. Her supervisor lead prayers during the day. She didn’t like the portrayal of the workers in “The Sunbeam Girls”. The women workers sang as they worked.
Eileen also recalls bonfire night, drinking ‘razza’ and listening to people singing. Workers could go for baths in the Sunbeam factory; few people had baths in their houses.

Cork, Ireland, 1940s-2000s
Pat Speight: Northside, Childhood Games, Schooldays,
Life History:
Cork Storyteller Pat Speight (b. 1940s) was born near the North Cathedral, known by locals as the North Chapel. His first house in Cork he thinks was a kind of tenement, with three families living in one house; his father later bought out this house.
Pat briefly recalls childhood games, bonfire night. He explains how steering carts [‘steernas’] were made. He describes the local shops and their role in the community, and how his mother bought food in different shops and put it on account on a daily basis.
Pat also recalls his schooldays. Poorer children got a glass of milk, a bun, and thruppence. He describes his childhood playgrounds, including Bell’s Field (‘Bellsa’). He describes the Coopa (cooperage), where locals threw their rubbish over a wall and down a sheer drop. He tells a funny story about having to climb into the rubbish to look for a lost ring.
He remembers that many local women kept their maiden names after marriage. He recalls Christmas dinner and the different food they had to eat, and a tradition of not eating meat on St Stephen’s Day. He remembers comic shops where children could buy and swap comics. He recalls his grandfather catching wild birds.
The family used to visit relatives in Kerry, where he saw many aspects of modernisation.

Alice Delay: Togher, Country Life, Childhood
Life History:
Alice remembers visiting her grandmother in Togher, which was the country, and eating bread and home-made butter. Her grandfather was a farm labourer. The house had an earth floor, and a ceiling made of sewn flour bags. Someone described the house as a cow shed with a door. It had a lean-to for the hens.
Her mother used to knit jumpers after being given the wool, which was weighed afterwards to see if she had stolen any. Alice comments on social relations with better off Cork families.
Rasa used to be sold for a penny.
She mentions her family's involvement in the War of Independence and the Civil War. Alice also talks about her father working in London during the Blitz.
Alice describes the Lido Cinema as a fleapit. She recalls having to have a penny for the ‘black babies’ collection. She used to go slogging apples, and her mother would make an apple tart. She talks about bonfire night in her youth and in modern times.
