Una Lyons: Oliver Plunkett Street, Cinemas, English Market
Life History:
Una (born 1960) grew up in a guesthouse, a Georgian building on Oliver Plunkett Street. She had two siblings. Her parents had an unusually cosmopolitan outlook. Her father was an engineer with CIE trains. The street was quite residential but she also recalls a number of named businesses, including Cold Storage, which sold ices. Most of the guesthouse guests were lorry drivers from Dublin. She recalls an African man who called for lodging having been refused elsewhere in Cork. Una remembers seven cinemas in Cork; her mother left her at The Savoy for an afternoon at a time. She recalls the English Market when it specialised in meat. She describes the different shops and businesses in the city centre.

Noreen Hanover: Christmas, Childhood Games, Cinema, Ghost stories, Milk and Cake Shops, Pawnbrokers, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Working life,
Life History: Cork:
Noreen grew up during the 1950s in Nicholas Church Place, off Cove Street. She says the house was a tenement house shared with a family who lived upstairs. She went to the South Presentation Convent School. Her father died when she was 10. She left school at 14 and worked for 11 years at the Cork Shoe Company until she got married.
She remembers some of the shops in the area of Nicholas Street and Barrack Street. In one of them, a short-sighted old lady kept her money on the counter and used to have money stolen. There were a milk and cake shop, Ciste Milis. She talks in detail about the games she played as a child, including playing house. Girls could make dolls out of the newspaper; they would get remnants of material to clothe them. They also tied ropes high on street poles and swung on them. Indoors, they collected cuttings from newspapers and books and made scrapbooks. An outside ball game had a simple chant, which she quotes. Christmas presents were often modest, but the excitement was high.
Her mother used to tell ghost stories to the local children, and Noreen remembers a story about a dead girl’s golden leg and a telling of the Babes in the Wood story.
She and her siblings were washed in a big tub in front of the fire, while her mother cooked bacon and pigs’ feet (crubeens).
She recalls the use of the pawn shops and her being afraid to be seen coming out of a pawnshop by her schoolmates.
She talks about local character Andy Gaw.
She remembers using the outside and indoor public baths, with swimming wear that was just regular underclothes, and running home by St Fin Barre’s cathedral, afraid of two stone angels whose trumpeting was said to herald the end of the world.
She recalls the Polo [Polar] Ice Cream Company, and the huge ice cream wafers she could buy.
In the Summer the family would go to Crosshaven or Youghal for inexpensive holidays. Personal entertainment could be had to pick blackberries, going picnicking with jam sandwiches, or going to the cinema. She tells how the pennies to go to the cinema were found by sweeping the floor or looking under a rock.
After her father died, her mother went to work for a Jewish family, the Rosses. She describes her mother’s working life and way of raising the family. She lists the different meals eaten during the week.
She remembers her grandmother visiting and singing Hey Diddle Diddle. At family gatherings, people would sing Alice Benbow [Sweet Alice Benbow, a.k.a Alice Benbolt] and other songs, of which she remembers the odd line.
Her older sister would go to the cinema and then tell the other children in the family the stories of the films she had seen.
She talks about moving to Ballyvolane after she got married, the community there and how Cork city has changed. She mentions going on holidays to Galway; sending the baggage up by train and hitching lifts up there. She used to go to dances in Cork and walk home safely early in the morning.

Noel Magnier: Gerald Griffin Street, Shops, Box Cars,
Life History:
Noel has written a book about growing up in Cork in the 1940s and 1950s, called Is That You, Boy? He was born (1939) and reared in Gerald Griffin Street. He has 4 siblings. He recalls the shops and businesses on the street.
Denny’s cellar was a piggery that gave much local employment.
He recalls sports such as bowl playing.
He remembers the various shops and businesses of Shandon Street. Every house had a ‘box car’, a wheeled cart for carrying provisions home.
Shops sold kindling wood in bundles, and coal was sold by the peck, and carried home on one’s back. Families put medals into gas meters instead of coins; people also made sawdust fires using old barrels.
Noel talks a little about some of the characters he knew. Men who returned from working in England were called Dagenham Yanks.
He talks about the Lido cinema and the serial films shown there.
He recalls the milk and cake shops of Cork; and the food they used to eat every day, including sheep’s head soup.
Noel recalls Wren festivities on St Stephen’s Day and later, and sings a verse from a song they sang. He recalls some of the popular songs of his youth, such as “Saint Teresa of the Roses”. They used to eat Pickle: pigs’ blood and water.

Marie Crean: South Parish, Cinemas, Black and Tan’s
Life History:
Marie was born (in the 1950s) and reared in High Street, in the South Parish, off Douglas Street; she thinks the street was formerly Quarry Lane. Some of her area was altered to make a new road. She went to school in South Presentation.
She recalls picking blackberries and slogging apples. There were few cars and everybody walked everywhere. As a child, she travelled a lot with her family on the train.
She talks about her early working life. She worked for Hanlon’s fish merchants.
Marie remembers her old neighbourhood and how some of it was demolished, both houses and shops, particularly Jackson’s Terrace.
Some men in her neighbourhood were involved in the War of Independence and the Civil War. She tells the story of the Black and Tan’s searching for them at a funeral.
Young people went courting on the disused Bandon railway line.
She worked making altar breads, with the Reparation Nuns.
She tells a funny story about how a corpse was washed and the water was thrown after the hearse afterwards.
She mentions several cinemas in Cork and recalls that The Savoy cinema had a great organist.

Joseph Lane: Gurranabraher, Milk and Cake Shops, Pranks
Life History:
Joseph grew up in Gurranabraher. He remembers three pawnshops of Cork. When people left Ballymacthomas to move into new corporation houses, they left their old houses behind, still complete with furniture and fittings.
Joe recalls a childhood expression, “Up the Ux” which was used to claim the right to eat part of an apple. He remembers cinemas of Cork city including The Lido, Blackpool. There was a milk and cake shop in Cork until the 1970s. He remembers living conditions: without washing machines or fridges; and having an outside toilet. There was a prank they played called “Thunder up the alley”, where this lit paper in people’s drainage pipes. He remembers one of the first Polish people who came to Cork, after the Second World War. He remembers the ice cream sold in Cold Storage. He recalls two public baths in Cork.

Jim Horgan: Pouladuff, Theatre, Superstitions
Life History:
Jim (born 1960) grew up in Croaghtamore Cottages, Pouladuff. His father was a draughtsman with Cork City Council. He was also an amateur film-maker, who made films with Jim and his siblings as actors. Some films required significant splicing by hand. His mother acted in the community as a kind of unofficial welfare worker. Jim became a photographer and graphic designer. He later became a fashion photographer, shooting models for the Fidelma Supple Agency in Cork.
As a graphic designer for Musgraves, he designed fliers by hand in the days before computers were used. He recalls the introduction of computers and new technology.
As a teenager, he preferred reading to sports and made great use of the library. Croaghtamore Cottages had been built on the site of a market garden, and the soil allowed him to conduct some amateur archaeology; he found old clay smoking pipes.
After leaving school he became involved in amateur drama and theatre, firstly with the Penny Youth Theatre; he was also involved with CAT (Cork Arts Theatre) and the Blackrock Players.
He talks about theatre superstitions.

Helen Prout: Film-making, Cinema, Youth
Life History;
Helen recalls her life as an amateur film-maker, as a teacher of film-making in Cork, and her involvement in the film festival scene.
Helen grew up in Millstreet, where her father’s cousin ran a cinema, through which she developed a love of film. She began making amateur films with a small camera. Her family moved to a farm in County Tipperary, but had to leave, and moved to Cork around 1950.
Helen won a film competition in Cork in 1977, and she taught young people in Gurranabraher how to make short films. She and her son, Con, began to liaise with schools to encourage film-making among the pupils. She also set up a festival for showing young people’s film and video. She was awarded the title of Cork Person of the Year in 1980.

Fergal Crowley: Patrick Street, Munster Arcade, Black and Tans
Life History:
Fergal worked in the Munster Arcade, Patrick Street. He describes the shop. His father started work there in 1901. After the building was burned by the Black and Tans during the Burning of Cork, the British government paid to have buildings on one side of the street rebuilt.
He remembers and names all the old cinemas of Cork. There was a milk and cake shop near O’Sullivan’s Quay. During the Second World War, he was issued with a gas mask; rationing continued until 1951.
He tells a funny story about a Guard and not having a light on his bike. He notes that the city was safe, and contrasts it with today’s more violent society.
Fergal talks again about the Munster Arcade; how clothes were displayed. He tells a funny story about sleeping at work and one employee sneaking out to a dance.

Cork, Ireland, 1940s-2000s
Breda Sheehan: Blackpool, Childhood games, Lido cinema, Spring Lane.
Life History: Blackpool, Childhood games, Ellis’s, Goulding's, Lido cinema, Spring Lane.
Breda grew up in Spring Lane, off Thomas Davis Street, Blackpool. She grew up with five sisters. Her father was a soldier in the Irish Army and was away a lot.
She grew up in a row of cottages that she believes dated back to the Seventeenth Century. People rented their houses until the 1950s, when they began to buy them. In the 1970s, the area bounded both the city and the countryside. It was also an industrial area, with Goulding’s fertilizer factory and Ellis’s gravel yard. During the 1950s men queued at Gouldings looking for casual work.
She lists the games and pastimes she played as a child: catching stones, marbles (‘glassy allies’) and scraps (scrapbooks). She names the lanes around Thomas Davis Avenue, which residents called by its old name, Foster’s Lane. Neighbours looked out for each other’s children and for each other.
She tells a story about looking for apples at the Ellis family house, nearby.
The Lido cinema in Blackpool showed episodic films, which she loved to see with her grandmother; she describes the seating inside.
She talks about how Blackpool has changed, and how the lanes have gone or been renamed and the old shops have gone. Changes came in the way shopping was done, with the arrival of city centre supermarkets, while the lanes were replaced with new housing. Yet she thinks that Spring Lane has basically remained unchanged; she remembers that there was an orchard behind the lane, which was replaced by Glen Rovers GAA club.
She comments on Blackpool Post office, about which there has been a local dispute; she mentions that one site of the post office had been the home of Thomas MacCurtain, Mayor of Cork, who had been shot during the War of Independence. She mentions Madden’s Buildings as being among the oldest social housing in Cork, built in 1885 [1886].
She comments that demolishing Blackpool’s lanes meant removing people and that its community spirit declined as a result; she notes the arrival of immigrants.

Andy Hawkins: Australia, Culture, Celtic Tiger, Coal Quay, Holy Communion, Inishfallen, London
Life History: Cork; Ireland; Australia; London; Work;
Andy Hawkins was born in The Marsh and lived there until he was 7 when his family moved to Mayfield. He was the youngest of nine. He went to St Francis School. His father ran a small carpentry business in The Marsh. His father died when Andy was young and his mother died in February 1979. Andy went to London at 17 and to Australia at 19 where he lived for 30 years. His wife Bernadette is from Cork. His two children were born in Australia and still live there.
When he was seven they moved to Mayfield and he remembers the novelty of having a bath and developing an interest in wildlife and in breeding birds. He describes how he went to Ross’s Wood and on fishing trips with his dog Buster. His got his first pair of long trousers for his first Holy Communion. A family friend offered the ‘communion breakfast’ which was the norm back then.
Soccer was a big interest for him. He describes, with excitement, the big adventure it was going to games and travelling out of Cork for a match. A big treat was getting his 2 and 6 pocket money on a Saturday morning so he could spend it on watching Cowboy films at the cinema where “who is the boy” was an important question.
Andy recalls a local man called Seanie Downey who was a boxer in the Irish Army and who represented Ireland in gymnastics. He talks also of another well known local figure called John Walsh who sold bundles of sticks and give him donkey rides along the Coal Quay.
Andy’s brother kept a pigeon loft and Andy earned thruppence to clean it out. He was fascinated that the birds returned ‘for their dinner.’ They kept a garden and his mother taught him about growing fruit and vegetables. His mother became a widow in her 40s. In those days women never remarried.
When Andy was 14 he ran away to London with a childhood friend. They were picked up by police and sent home. He left for London at 17 on the Inishfallen and gives detailed description about his arrival in London, sleeping rough, getting work on building sites and his dream to go to Australia.
At 19 he left for Australia via Singapore. His first job in Perth was in a foundry. He hitchhiked to other towns and took the Indian Pacific train to Adelaide to avoid being conscripted. He spent time in Sydney and Perth and describes with humour some of the unusual jobs he had: working with horses and being the driver for an alcoholic railway manager. He recounts how his saving grace in Australia was the fact that he could play music. He started traditional music sessions in pubs in Perth and it was a great scene.
Andy describes coming back to live in Cork in May 2000. It was more complicated and expensive to get accommodation and services than in Australia. When he left Ireland was more conservative so he wasn’t prepared for how less subservient people were and how they discussed their sex lives openly at work.
There was a sense that Ireland had made a sudden jump into the Celtic Tiger. Andy noticed how much more money young people had and how much beer they drank. He felt the community spirit had gone and the new building developments didn’t take care of people’s community needs. Describes how he loves being back in Cork for the social life and knowing so many people and for the ‘ball hopping’.

Alice Delay: Togher, Country Life, Childhood
Life History:
Alice remembers visiting her grandmother in Togher, which was the country, and eating bread and home-made butter. Her grandfather was a farm labourer. The house had an earth floor, and a ceiling made of sewn flour bags. Someone described the house as a cow shed with a door. It had a lean-to for the hens.
Her mother used to knit jumpers after being given the wool, which was weighed afterwards to see if she had stolen any. Alice comments on social relations with better off Cork families.
Rasa used to be sold for a penny.
She mentions her family's involvement in the War of Independence and the Civil War. Alice also talks about her father working in London during the Blitz.
Alice describes the Lido Cinema as a fleapit. She recalls having to have a penny for the ‘black babies’ collection. She used to go slogging apples, and her mother would make an apple tart. She talks about bonfire night in her youth and in modern times.
