An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. R.F ...em and so that was kind of how I got to be a lecturer in Speech and Hearing Sciences at UCC.
D.H: So Robert going back what was your first impression of Cork?
R.F: My first impression of Cork, I remember driving in, I had a friend drive me from Dublin – she lives in Dublin – and she drove me into Cork. And em I don’t know, I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know what Cork would be like, I mean I know there was a match on when I arrived and the place was very dirty (there was litter everywhere) and we came up MacCurtain Street, because my B & B was at MacCurtain Street, and there was a huge amount of litter there, and I remember my friend complaining about the amount of litter, and then I just got a sense, I just thought that Cork looked very interesting: it was very kind of hodge podge, you know, different colours, different textures, different types of buildings, a lot of the buildings I thought were not looked after like you’d think, like monument type buildings very neglected. And em but I was interested in all the different, it was an interesting town, it was very em stimulating because of the different colours, different types of things to see. I noticed that there was only one type of person: it was just Irish people kind of thing: I’m used to much more, lots of different races and colours and people and that, it was just one type of person, it was, white European kind of people, and very few Africans or darker coloured people, but that has changed in the last five years of course, em but I do remember thinking it was very monocultural, and that kind of thing; I also came to Cork in kind of Summer so it was very bright, and I thought, I liked the city, I felt it was interesting. One of the things that really struck me as well about the houses was that they all looked so like on top of each other, and tiny and small, and being used to houses in South Africa where there is planning (the cities are really planned) they are all modern cities – they are not like medieval towns or cities like Cork. So everything is planned and there are long distances, you know and the houses are widely placed, and everybody has got a little plot of land, and all the houses are separate. I’m talking about middle class kind of European people, white people in South Africa. A lot of Africans now that’s also the case – they live like that in South Africa too, but there is that differentiation: African people are often poorer, but not all, of course, but I noticed that when I came to Cork I thought Gosh, the houses are so squashed up nearly like a township, really I think in South Africa, and I’d always be surprised going into a house or a shop: it looked so small on the outside, and when you went in it was much bigger on the like an oblong shaped house, a square house, and most houses in South Africa wouldn’t have a double story, most houses are single storey, and they spread out on the ground rather than going up, so I noticed houses having three or four storeys, and that was very unusual for me, and I was struck by just how everything was squashed up, so em houses are very different, just the way people build, and the way people live as well, and very small spaces for people to bring up very large families in, one just wonders how people with twelve children or even six children would manage on such a squashed up house, and then I said why isn’t there enough space to build, and it’s not like that, it’s just that there is a different culture of building houses and a different way of building and a different way of conceiving of houses. Em later on I mean I started noticing when I spoke to people, local people, em one of the big topics of conversation in Ireland is property, and that everybody wants to have property, everyone wants to have a house, whereas where I come from no one really talks about that, it’s just taken for granted: you might get a house or you might not; you might rent or you might buy, but there is no focus on ownership of property, em although everyone you know a lot of people have, buy houses over in South Africa. Here young people, young people between the ages of twenty and thirty, are you know they’re all talking about they want a house, they want property, they want to own houses, and then you look at the prices of the houses, and like that was one thing that would just astound me at the price of a house: to me 100,000 pounds or punt at the time was just, for a house so small, and so cramped, how could you ever pay that amount of money for a house, and so I never, I still to this day don’t understand this property obsession, and everybody focussing on ownership of houses, and why don’t people just spread the building out more into the country and open it up and have more houses, and you know it’s just very difficult for me to understand. But I suppose there is a history and there is a history of British occupation, and ownership, and people wanting ownership of their land because they were you know disenfranchised and their land taken away from them, so one can understand it from that perspective,

Robert talks in detail about growing up in South Africa, and makes some observations about Cork places and people.
Robert (b. 1969) is from a gold-mining town in South Africa. He talks about mining conditions there. He comments that South Africa has many different cultures and languages. He remembers Holy Communion as being a very religious event without the element of being given money. He talks about the kind of food and meals that are eaten by white South Africans.
After gaining a qualification in Speech and Language Therapy, he wanted to travel and he settled in Cork. After returning home he missed Cork and returned. He describes his impression of the city when he first arrived. He observes that Irish people are quite indirect in their conversation and avoid sounding confrontational, and he returns to the topic of how language is employed. He relates a couple of funny Cork conversations which he overheard.

Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. C.O'C: What was Gurranebraher like in the early days?
K.O'C Well I remember my mother now and my aunt when they were young, they used to come up Gurranebraher for their walks, you know their walks of a Sunday, maybe their walks in the evening after school, and it was only countryside, all fields. And then I remember when we were very young my mother would take us up what’s Knocknaheeny now do you know Knocknaheeny up there and I can see her she’d be in the field knitting: they were all knitters: all the mothers were great knitters, the little jumpers and the little dresses because it was cheaper to knit. And we’d be jumping over the ditches going from one field to the other so you see that was countryside to me when I was young, and it’s all built up now, and this place was countryside to people sort of in my mothers area and era, and it’s all kind of built up now. But it was lovely when we came up and no matter where we went, what’s Churchfield now is all fields, so we’d be over around Churchfield and we’d have great laugh, there’d be little ponds and you’d be gathering up the grass, and you’d be putting it into the ponds so that the water would rise you know. Even Sun Valley Drive down there now that’s how we would used to go and come to school, it was all fields, there was one big, big slope and we’d be running up the slope and running down and running up the slope and you might be an hour or two late coming from school and you would be murdered because your dinner would be burnt in the oven or in the pot, but it was lovely. Then we used to go out Fairhill – that was all countryside – and farmers, it was all kind of farming land really: you’d be looking in at the cows grazing, and we used to go . . .

An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. D.H: So we’ll speak about the English market, you can tell me about it, what prompted you to take a stall in the market?
I.S: Actually it’s all circumstances: I never meant to take a stall in the Market, except I met French people who had a stall there previously who were making cheese, and they wanted to, they had a big stall, now it was in 1991 no ‘92. In ‘92 the English Market wasn’t the way it is now – it was getting not kind of not a very good reputation in Cork, and you know like the stall had been let down a bit, there was loads of empty stalls, and nobody wanted them, and those French people came in there, and I was laughing at them, and I said is not like the market in France, you know, this market isn’t going to bring you anything, that was the time. And eh and they said you’ll see, you’ll see, you’ll see, you’ll see, you see this is going to change right. And I said right, ok and they brought me to share their stall and they were doing cheese at the time so I was going to do charcuterie which is a cooked meat, and pates, and cured meat, it’s usually based on pork meat, you know, so I said why not, and then I started importing those, and then I started making my own, and eh and then they left, but it was very, very hard at the beginning because there were very few people interested in the kind of product we were doing, and the condition of the market was actually was also difficult, you know. And then year by year it improved, and the other stall came in, and the other cheese stall came in, and then after a few years then we had the Café Centrale, and then I moved to a bigger stall, and that makes a big difference, and the market is now running so well, it is so bright there is a diversity of product, and still what makes it very special is the mixing of old and new

Isabelle Sheridan is from a suburb outside Paris called Le Pleine de Mont Esson. She moved to Ireland in 1986 and eventually established the well-known charcuterie called ‘On the Pig’s Back’ in the English Market in Cork. She discusses her childhood in France, differences between France and Ireland, and some of the social nuances of running her market stall.
Isabelle started ‘On the Pig’s Back’ artisan food company which began as a stall in The English Market in the early 1990s. Isabelle grew up in an apartment block in a village called La Plaine de Montesson, a suburb near Paris, where vegetables were grown and mushrooms were farmed underground. She has two younger sisters. Her father was an engineer and her mother was a painter. She remembers going to the opera and museums in Paris, as a treat, with her godmother. Isabelle is married with three children. Her husband is from Mayo. She states that there were fireworks everywhere on the 14th of July and in the area where Isabelle grew up they had a Village Day where local villages came together to host parades, barbecues, and have fireworks. They celebrated Saints Day, La Toussaint, around Halloween, which was a day of dedication for the dead when they went to the cemetery to visit family graves. At Christmas, they would all go to mass on the 24th, which was followed by a family meal at midnight. She made her communion twice. The boys and girls all wore the same rented white robes. Isabelle describes her love of food and cooking as a child. Her father taught her to identify cheese and cut it properly. She talks about the culture of French food and wine and how having dinner with others was a social occasion. Every house had a wine cellar. Her grandfather’s cellar held up to 800 bottles of wine.
Isabelle came to Ireland as a purchaser in a new factory, initially for six months. Then, having met her husband, she stayed. Isabelle describes her wedding in Nantes and the differences in the civil ceremony experience as compared to Ireland. Isabelle offers a good description of the differences between French and Irish working practices. She highlights that French people commuting in and out of Paris would not have had the time, upon arriving home, for much else than cooking and eating dinner. In Ireland, she states there is enough time, upon arriving home, that you almost have a ‘second day’. Cork has a large French community which meets regularly mainly for children centred activity. Isabelle gives good detail on the development of The English Market, the types of traders and the food stalls available there and how she set up her own charcuterie stall. She began importing French food and eventually set up the well-known brand ‘On the Pig’s back’.

A place-based interviewing project exploring everyday life in Cork City, with excerpts disseminated on a series of online digital maps. <br /><br />In 2010, the Cork Folklore Project initiated a new collection and dissemination project, entitled the Cork Memory Map. We wished to step up our interviewing programme and enhance public access to our holdings through the creation of an online map of stories and memories. A central concern in this initial stage was to keep our research agenda as open as possible in terms of generating accounts of everyday life in the city down through the years. As we were not carrying out topic-focussed interviews (in contrast to previous projects on topics such as song in the Northside, drag hunting and occupational lore), the place-based focus enabled us to explore everyday life at different stages of interviewees’ life histories, remaining open to cues from the interviewees while maintaining a sense of direction and purpose for all involved. The fact that the interviews were structured around memories of place, rather than taking the form of life history interviews, also had an impact on the material gathered. The initial phase of interviewing was carried out in the main with older residents of Cork City, Ireland, who grew up in the city centre or adjacent suburbs and who were born between 1929 and 1950. Lasting between 45 minutes and two hours, individual interviews in the Memory Map project tend to follow a similar pattern. A description of the interviewee’s childhood neighbourhood is followed by a succession of ‘grand tour’ questions about daily routines, work and play within the neighbourhood. Places important or familiar to interviewees were explored, as were routes habitually taken through the landscape. This narrative base was used as a springboard for using cues provided by the interviewees as the basis for follow-up questions on significant people and activities mentioned. <br />A sub-collection of shorter interviews was generated during Heritage Week (20-28 August) 2011. The Cork Folklore Project, in collaboration with Civic Trust House, launched the Memory Map Project with an exhibition and collection event throughout the week. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to ‘put themselves on the map’ through short interviews. The Memory Map also featured in a ten-minute Curious Ear documentary broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 during Heritage Week, and available as a podcast (The Curious Ear/Documentary on One (Cork City Memory Map) http://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/2011/0816/646858-curious-ear-doconone-cork-city-memory-map/).<br /><br />The bulk of the interviews were carried out between July and December 2010 (21 interviews), with 9 full-length interviews carried out in the second half of 2011, along with 18 shorter interviews carried out during heritage week, 23-27 August 2011, and 9 interviews in the second half of 2012. 1 video interview was carried out in January 2014 with Memory Map interviewee Pat Speight. The design for the map and supporting database design was carried out by Cheryl Donaghue (UCC) as project work for an MSc in Interactive Media, with assistance from Colin Mac Hale. <br />The Project received support for the further technical development of the map from the Irish Heritage Council in 2012. The map itself has undergone various iterations, the most recent being its preparation for use on the Omeka platform by the CFP team and PhD candidate Penny Johnston in 2016/2017.<br /><br />Existing and subsequent interviews from the CFP collections have also been utilised for the online mapping dissemination project: the interviews designated as ‘memory map’ interviews are those carried out specifically with the map in mind from 2010 onwards. And then, the other side, if you came down the bottom of Chapel Hill, you went left you had the Coopa, but if you went right, down towards - - again I’m calling it Church Avenue - - but heading down towards Eason’s Hill, there were two or three houses, knocked down. What did we call - - we had a name for those houses now that were hauled down - - we’d the Coopa on one side - - I can’t - - it’ll come to me now in a minute. We used to play in there anyway, they were kind of half knocked down houses, and they’re gone since, they have an old, bit of a park laid out there now. But the name will come back to me after Geraldine, honest. But that’s another place we used to play in.<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> Yes, and where there any people, characters that you remember from around the neighbourhood?<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> Oh Geraldine, the place was full of characters. As a child, I can remember ‘the Rancher’. The Rancher, the rancher. I remember the day the Rancher got married, I was only a young fella. The Rancher got married. The Rancher used to chopsticks now, over by Shandon now, right? But what I remember about it - - ‘twas grand now they got married in the North Chapel, and what I heard afterwards, and it didn’t make sense to me as a child, but it made sense afterwards - - when they got married, they came out and he said em, ‘we’ll go to the Small Steeple now, for our celebration.’ ‘Oh no,’ she said, ‘I’m going to Jack Ford’s or I’m going to Jack Rum’s.’ ‘No’ he said, ‘we’ll go to the - - we’ll go to the Small Steeple.’ ‘No, we’ll go to Jack - -‘ ‘You go to Jack Fords and I’m going to the Small Steeple.’ And he went one way, and she went the other, and they had their wedding party there. Happy out like that. Em, I remember em, who do I remember? The fella with the snotty nose, who was that again? Always wiped his nose, was that Holy Joe was it or was it - -<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> I don’t know now - -<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> Could be Holy Joe, always wiped his nose, but very good, you know, very kind to children and everything. Who else was there now? Do you know who was there then - - and he’s dead since, so I have to be careful - - would be em, eh - - he used to play cards, he used to kick the coin up in the air, kick it up into his top pocket. Em, what was his name again? Ah for God’s sake, Pat O’Brien would know him now, well. Not Tony, Tony Hennessy was kind of a character growing up, but he was Mr Soccer, and his mother was a great person. Who was the fella who used to kick the coin? O’Leary, Dony Leary. Dony, I’d say Dony O’Leary. Mad Dony we knew him as. Mad Dony, he used to be there. Who else? And birds. Everybody had a bird. My father used to keep birds. [It’s] a bit awful now, he used to trap birds, we’ll say canaries - - not canaries - - goldfinches and linnets and then he’d breed them and he’d get a mule. So a lot of houses would have a birdcage outside their window as well. That just came to me there now. And they used to have birds.<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> Would many people go drag hunting in the area?<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> Now I never went. I wouldn’t be ashamed to say I never went drag hunting, but right behind our house was a place called Barrack View and there, there was a man - - a character - - called O’Callaghan. Now his sons still do it, but they were actually related - - his wife was Bridie Lordan. Funny thing about that area when it comes to me - - and I know I was only talking to someone about it the other night about it - - all the women that got married, retained their maiden names. Cause my mother would be known as Hannah Clifford, right? Mrs Welsh, Bridie Lordan em, Annie - - Annie, Annie, she was - - all the women were known by their maiden names. Funny they held on to it. Esther Lordan. They never took their married names, which is kind of something good in a way as well. But coming back to that again. Bridie, Mrs Doyle married - - right? - - O’Callaghan. Now this Mrs Doyle would be a daughter or a grand-daughter of Connie Doyle of the famous armoured car, right? So - - and then, this fella O’Callaghan used to keep hounds there. There’s still hounds there today, his son still has the hounds for the drags now. And these were small houses now, tiny houses like. And they used to keep big families and big dogs.<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> It’s fascinating Pat, and I think that our own Cork City, like, and on the Northside especially, people loved the opera too, the singing was there, would you know - -<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> Well the other thing, the Opera - - I saw the Opera House catch fire, I was only a child. I saw the Opera House go up in flames, I was only allowed go down to as far as Mulgrave Road and look across to it. But the sky was just red, I remember that. I wasn’t conscious - - I’d be conscious of the Opera House myself for the pantomimes, but I don’t remember it much, the pictures were our big thing, we had so many picture houses - - or cinemas - - around Cork. We used to go to the cinema a lot. And I remember my father bringing me to the cinema, but there was one particular shop - - I should’ve thought of it there - - it had a huge influence on me later on in my life. At the very bottom of Shandon Street just before where it joined with Blarney Street, there was a shop at the corner there, and ‘twas ‘Pilo’s’[?], I think ‘twas Pilo’s. ‘Twas a comic shop now people didn’t know what a comic shop was, they’d think it was a sense of humour shop and it wasn’t. ‘Twas where you swap comics like The Beano, The Dandy, The Hotspur, all these things, and you could - - on Friday night, my father would come up. He’d pass up another shop called ‘Nosey Keefes’ [?], Nosy Keefe's was at the bottom, and they used to have the most beautiful broken chocolate, every kind of thing. We’d get a bag of that, and he’d get a few comics for us, and we’d be as happy as Larry. So you’d read the comics, and the next day you’d go down and you’d swap them for some other comics.<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> You got to read everything so.<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> You got to read everything, and there was one type of comic called The Illustrated Book of - - The Illustrated Book of Classics, right? ‘Twas a comic, right? A dear comic, but it dealt with everything from Robin Hood to El Cid to Huckleberry Finn. All the world tales were in it, and I’d say that probably influenced me later on into - - you know, in the story-telling world, that at that age we used to read so much.<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> Yes - -<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> And then they’d comics called - - eh, forty-five pages or forty-six pages was it - - that, they were war pictures, where the Germans couldn’t shoot an elephant if ‘twas ten feet away, and the Brits could shoot at two hundred miles away and still knock the eye out of a fly. You know what I mean?<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> [laughs]. I do. And what was Christmas like, up around your neighbourhood Pat?<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> Christmas was great. Ah, Christmas. I - - to this very day, I celebrate Christmas. I love Christmas with a passion, because - - for nostalgia. For the cooking, the cooking in our house - - ‘cause my mother was a great cook. Like, for our Christmas dinner now, you’d have - - you’d have the turkey stuffed, right? You’d have a couple of stuffings on it, you’d have bread stuffing and you’d have potato stuffing. They did chestnut stuffing now, but we just did potato stuffing and bread stuffing. And I’d help with that, we’d all help with it, right? Then we’d have spiced beef, right? And the ham, the ham used to cause all the confusion, because midnight mass you weren’t allowed to - - you weren’t allowed to eat before going to midnight mass, because if you were going for communion, you couldn’t. So my mam would have the ham boiling, right? And we’d go to midnight mass, and we’d come back and we’d attack it. The other thing - - Christmas, to me would start, right, with sending the letters away to Santy, all that. Now, I dunno how my father and mother did it. There was five of us, and we always got something. We always got something, so I’ve only happy memories of it. Not looking at it through rose-tinted glasses, I honestly think we had lovely Christmases. We had - - my father and mother then, would disappear into town on Christmas Eve to do the shopping, and they’d come back half cut. They’d be kinda nicely - - right? And you’d get a half-crown - - you didn’t know what you’d get, ‘cause if the father - - he didn’t drink that often, but - - I won’t say it didn’t suit him, he was a lovely happy man when he’d drink in him. So they’d be there, we’d head off to midnight mass, they might have a couple more drinks at home, ‘cause they’d be going to mass on Christmas Day, and then we’d tackle the ham. The ham at that stage. So you had ham, spiced beef was a big thing and then you had - - then you’d have - - ‘twas like a banquet. Now, you’d have roast potatoes, croquets - - now when I say croquets, we’d make our own croquets, kinda thing. Then you’d have everything - - and d’you know what we had? We used to have curried rice, this is way back when now. You know, people ignore it, but long ago, my mother’d make a small pot of curried rice. Absolutely gorgeous. Then you’d have - - now, of course, the dinner wouldn‘t start ‘til about three or four, and the smells coming out from the kitchen. You’d be weak with the hunger because you’d be smelling it and ‘twould be - - and there was never a panic, ‘twas three or four, that kinda way. I can’t even talk because my mouth is watering, now. Me tongue is swimming here in me mouth now.<br /><br /><strong>GH:</strong> [laughs].<br /><br /><strong>PS:</strong> But ‘twas always good. Now, but what we had then St Stephens’s Day. We never ate meat? Our family didn’t. ‘Twas - - I think ‘twas a Kerry tradition that my mother brought back with her. That nobody ate meat on St Stephens’s Day, because - - the house was full of meat - - but by abstaining from meat, ‘twas felt that you’d kept bad luck and ill health away from the house for twelve months. Now, whether ‘twas a Pagan thing or a Christian thing, I dunno, but there’s maybe - - I still don’t eat meat on St Stephens’s day. Now I’m not sure about the rest of the family, but I just do it because, you know, the old Irish saying, ‘Na de an nos agus na bris nos’, ‘Don’t make, or don’t break a tradition.’ So, I still wouldn’t eat meat on St Stephens’s Day, but five past twelve on St Stephens’s night, by Jesus you couldn’t get between me and the meat. Cork Storyteller Pat Speight (b. 1940s) was born near the North Cathedral, known by locals as the North Chapel. His first house in Cork he thinks was a kind of tenement, with three families living in one house; his father later bought out this house.
Pat briefly recalls childhood games, bonfire night. He explains how steering carts [‘steernas’] were made. He describes the local shops and their role in the community, and how his mother bought food in different shops and put it on account on a daily basis.
Pat also recalls his schooldays. Poorer children got a glass of milk, a bun, and thruppence. He describes his childhood playgrounds, including Bell’s Field (‘Bellsa’). He describes the Coopa (cooperage), where locals threw their rubbish over a wall and down a sheer drop. He tells a funny story about having to climb into the rubbish to look for a lost ring.
He remembers that many local women kept their maiden names after marriage. He recalls Christmas dinner and the different food they had to eat, and a tradition of not eating meat on St Stephen’s Day. He remembers comic shops where children could buy and swap comics. He recalls his grandfather catching wild birds.
The family used to visit relatives in Kerry, where he saw many aspects of modernisation.

An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. <strong>The following is a short extract from the interview transcript, copyright of the Cork Folklore Project. If you wish to access further archival material for this interview or other interviews please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com</strong><br /><br /><strong>D.H:</strong> Billy are there any places in Cork that bring back memories to you or that you see every day and have a little bit you want to talk about. <br /><br /><strong>B.Mc:</strong> Yes there are, I think the Lough in Cork comes to mind straightaway - it is a place one of the earliest memories I have I’m sure of going someplace without my parents; it would be fifteen, twenty minutes walk from where I lived in Quaker Road in Cork, em we used to go there after school to fish for torneens, sticklebacks. sticklebacks ok, we used to fish for them there, and roach and rudd and that sort of thing; long summer evenings fishing for those. Another thing that comes very close to my memory when I speak of the Lough is the Hurling League matches that used to be played there, oh I’m talking fifty years ago, and they were sponsored by Dan Hobbs who was a men’s clothier in Patrick Street; he was also a local comedian who appeared many times on the stage of the old Opera House, em, he had a slogan which said, you see he was a men’s clothier, and he used to have the slogan if you want to get ahead get a hat. As I say he used to sponsor the local hurling leagues at the Lough which were played in the long summer evenings! Another incident was my brother had a what we would call a racing bicycle - a bicycle with turned down handlebars, you know, and he was very, very particular about that: he wouldn’t let us use that, we were too young to use that, so that was his pride and joy. But one summer he went to the country working as a helper on a combine harvester, (combine harvesters were very new at the time, and they used to require so many people working around them), and he was doing that for the whole summer, and while he was away I took advantage of his bike, and one day we were cycling in the Lough. Now you can walk right around the Lough: there is an inner path and an outer path; the outer path was always regarded as an Irish mile around the Lough, now it would take a person walking a good ten or eleven minutes to walk around the outer side, but that wasn’t good enough for me: I was cycling the bike in the inner path. Now there is a little wall all the way around it, it is about ten inches high, now while I was cycling around the Angelus bell rang, are you familiar with the Angelus? The Angelus bell rang, and being brought up in the strict religious code that I was, I made a sign of the Cross, and to do that of course it entailed taking my right hand off the handlebar, and while I had lost concentration for that moment, the front wheel of the bike struck the curb which ran right around the Lough and I went head over heels into the Lough with the bicycle following on top of me. Completely submerged in the water, and that’s the way I had to go home and confess my sins that I had taken my brothers bike out and that I had to suffer the consequences. That for me was the Lough, it has many, many memories, and eh I brought my children there down the years, and now I bring my grandchildren there! D.H: Do you find that it is the same, or that it has changed in these many years? B.Mc: The beauty of it in fact is that it is full of wildlife now, it is full of so many different birds - there were just swans and water hens on it in my time, but now there all sorts of ducks and geese that weren’t known around here then, but it is now a wildlife sanctuary and it is beautifully kept and it’s lovely to see, so the Lough has improved to what it was in my time. Legends surrounding the Lough, there is actually the legend of the Lough, which is, it has been written in quite a number of books written about Cork and it’s a the story goes that it is the site where once stood a great castle and the King of the Castle of course had the usual beautiful daughter, who was enthralled with this lovely prince, and one night when there was a big feast in their honour being held at the castle, the King asked the princess to go to the well and bring a jug of fresh water for the table, but warned her that she wasn’t to spill any water because the story went if the water was spilled then the castle would be submerged in water. So the princess went and of course the prince being the gentleman that he was he accompanied her to the well, the jug overflowed, and spilled, and the castle was submerged, everybody was lost, and people say that on particular moonlit nights now you can still hear the music that was being played at the ball, at the time of the function you know, so that is something along the lines of the legend of the Lough now which you can read in quite a number of books about Cork. So that is the Lough was just a beautiful place to go, and it seemed the natural place to go of a sunny summers evening. Fitzgeralds Park too was obviously a great attraction for us young people, particularly I think in our teenage years, when eh guys like myself were chasing the girls and that you know, you’re always bound to find them around Fitzgeralds Park lying out there in the sunshine, and I think that is where we did most of our courting in our time so a lot of memories there. A lot of memories too in the Marina for the same reason; you know we didn’t have any transport or anything like that so all these places were in walking distance and we would spend many, many hours around there. For instance on a Sunday evening, you would have motorcycling on what was then known as the Monaghan circuit, it consisted of the Monaghan Road and Centre Park Road, the motorbikes used to race up and down those roads, there was a natural circuit there, em, so that used to take up quite a lot of our time, eh watching the motorcycle racing, which doesn’t happen anymore of course. Again there were motorcycling racing on the Carrigrohane circuit which consisted of the Carrigrohane straight road, out as far as where the roundabout before you come to Ballincollig (the Poulavone Roundabout) eh bicycles would round that and go back the Model Farm Road, as far as Dennehy’s Cross, go out then to Victoria Cross and back out the straight road again, and that would have carried on up to possibly twenty years ago, when there were some objections I think from the residents of Model Farm Road (that became fairly well built up at that time) and these motorbikes would have been practicing there three, four o’clock in the morning, em, so now you would still have what they call the Flying Kilo, and that sort of thing, there is a kilometre marked out on the Carrigrohane straight where they do speed trials, and that sort of thing, but that’s as far as it goes now, you don’t have the Carrigrohane in use anymore. Do you know all those things they all mean something, and they’re all memories of childhood and growing up in Cork you know, that’s nice to think back on. D.H: This has been wonderful, thank you very much, Billy! B.Mc: You’re very welcome indeed.

An account of the resource
Billy, a one-time Cork Folklore Project member of staff and long-term collaborator, was born in Cork in 1941 and grew up with his six siblings in Quaker Road. His mother was born in Cork and his father came from Dunmanway. Billy attended St Marie’s of the Isle convent school and then Christ the King School in Turners Cross.
Billy recalls that, even though times were hard, life was good, and people didn’t feel underprivileged because all their neighbours were equally poor. He talks about emigration and the Innisfallen ship that sailed out of Cork City every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, full of emigrants. He would make money as a child carrying bags for country people arriving by bus heading for the boat. He witnessed the heartbreak at the quayside, and he calls this the ‘sad side’ of life in Cork.
Billy recalls having to leave school at fifteen to take over his father’s job as a bread van driver when his father took ill. His career also included working at Sunbeam (Sunbeam Wolsey Textiles), which he describes in detail, and at Cork Airport.
Billy talks about his father, who started off working as a tram driver then became a bread van driver, and who was also involved in the War of Independence. Billy talks about the characters he met while working with his father, collecting eggs and bread from country people and Travellers. He tells a tragic-comic story about his Holy Communion and the May procession.
He talks about various aspects of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), including his presidency of the Douglas club, an account of what hurling is and how it is played, and the link between the GAA and Irish Nationalism.
He tells a humorous story about being taken out of school to cycle from Cork to Watergrasshill to tend sheep on land his father owned.
Billy also remembers fishing and playing hurling up at the Lough. He shares memories of the Lough and its changing environment over the years. He remembers trying to meet girls in Fitzgerald’s Park. He recalls motorcycle racing on Monahan Road and Centre Park Road, and on the Carrigrohane circuit on Sundays.

An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. 37 ethnographic interviews carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city in 2004/2005 and in the latter half of the twentieth century. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.

A.H.: I did. I’ll tell you the first experience about going abroad. One of the people I met when I moved to the Northside was a man called Kevin Gardner. Kevin and I became very close and we were always talking about slipping away out of Ireland, you see. I was only fourteen at this time, you see. Kevin was fifteen and a half. To tell you the truth, we ran away. We got a train from Cork up to Dublin —two kids— and we got a boat from Dublin to Liverpool. I remember because when we got off we went to a place called Lime Street Station in Liverpool. And we must have been noticeable. We must have stuck out because the next day the guards picked us up —my poor mother at the time God, and they sent us back to Ireland, you know. Needless to say I wasn’t too popular with the mother when I got back, you know? So I got the real taste for travelling then. And then, when I was seventeen, I said to my mother I’d like to spend some time with another distant relation who lived in London for about twenty-odd years at the time. So, I said I was going for a visit but, in actual fact —I was seventeen years of age— I got the Innisfallon at the time… we used to get it to Wales and get the train and I went to London but I didn’t stay… I met two Cork men at the time: Thomas Mulcahy and Seán O’Rourke from the Northside and we eh… they put me wide —so to speak— about getting flats. So I didn’t go and visit the cousin at all, because I knew there would be sort of restrictions on me. I wanted to be a free spirit at the time. But I spent the first five weeks in a place called Shepherds Bush and one of the lads said to me, like, you know, “what we have to do —because we had no place at the time— is go into the bus station in Shepherd’s Bush and they were wide because they had been there for a while— always pick the last bus in the station to sleep in because it would be last out in the morning”. It would be the furthest bus away, you see Noel, and many a night we were woken up at about three or four in the morning and told “get out!” and we’d be sleeping in benches until we got…
N. O’S.: And how many other… would there have been other children or young people…?
A.H.: There was five of us! I always remember there was three from Cork and two from the North of Ireland and we kind of… we stuck together because we were all Irish. We were very young at the time and I actually was working! I then… what happened is the boys said “to get a job now, like, this is where the Irish people hang out, in certain pubs” —there in London. And I met this man and they told me he was “the ganger man”. The ganger man at the time meant nothing to me. I soon picked up on all the slang words, so to speak, and I met this man called George Foley, who was a Cork man. George Foley, the first thing he says to me was “I’ll give you a start, but you’ll have to change two things: first” he says “you have to change your age, you’ll have to tell people you’re nineteen” —I was only seventeen for God’s sake — “Okay” I said, “what is the second thing”, he said “the second thing is you have to change your name” because everything was into the hand… this, that and the other… I learnt an awful lot, like, about how to get on as a young Irish person in London from people who had been there for twenty and thirty years. And I appreciated that. Now, it was during this time on a building site in London, I met a truck driver who used to deliver stuff to the site in what —at the time to me— was a very peculiar accent. And, as time went by, anyway, he told me his story. He was an Australian. Now, I had read about Australia, but I knew nothing about it…

N. O’S.: There’s not much life experience at that stage anyway…
A.H.: No, it’s not, you see. Age is experience —which soon came along after that. And, eh… I had spent quite a while in London and I met a lot of Irish people —a lot of Cork people, in fact— and they had no intention of going nowhere, to be very honest with you. And that was their thing. I don’t blame these people, like. It’s just that me… I just had this thing that I wanted to go and see how the rest of the world was. I first landed then in South-East Asia before I went to Australia. I eventually got my visa to go to Australia in a place called “Australian house on the strand”. I got my little brown suitcases at the time… And I can remember very clearly —this actually happened to me— I got a train from Victoria and I was heading towards Heathrow airport and —there must be about eight million people in London— and I was sitting in the carriage and Noel’s —my brother’s— friend comes into the carriage and spots me… comes up to me —he was a man of about twenty-three, twenty-four at the time. He says “Where are you going?” Well I told a lie at the time, I said “Well, I’m actually going home”. “That’s great” he says, “they’ll be looking forward to see you!” But he looked at the tag on my bag and he says —and he hit the roof—, he says “does your family realise you’re going to Australia” you see? So I said “Ah, yeah! I told them”. He was very insistent in coming to the airport, so much so, I jumped off the train —I did! I actually jumped off the train to give him the slip and I got to the airport. But, you see, I wanted to stop over —I didn’t go straight to Australia—, and headed down to Singapore…

Andy Hawkins was born in The Marsh and lived there until he was 7 when his family moved to Mayfield. He was the youngest of nine. He went to St Francis School. His father ran a small carpentry business in The Marsh. His father died when Andy was young and his mother died in February 1979. Andy went to London at 17 and to Australia at 19 where he lived for 30 years. His wife Bernadette is from Cork. His two children were born in Australia and still live there.
When he was seven they moved to Mayfield and he remembers the novelty of having a bath and developing an interest in wildlife and in breeding birds. He describes how he went to Ross’s Wood and on fishing trips with his dog Buster. His got his first pair of long trousers for his first Holy Communion. A family friend offered the ‘communion breakfast’ which was the norm back then.
Soccer was a big interest for him. He describes, with excitement, the big adventure it was going to games and travelling out of Cork for a match. A big treat was getting his 2 and 6 pocket money on a Saturday morning so he could spend it on watching Cowboy films at the cinema where “who is the boy” was an important question.
Andy recalls a local man called Seanie Downey who was a boxer in the Irish Army and who represented Ireland in gymnastics. He talks also of another well known local figure called John Walsh who sold bundles of sticks and give him donkey rides along the Coal Quay.
Andy’s brother kept a pigeon loft and Andy earned thruppence to clean it out. He was fascinated that the birds returned ‘for their dinner.’ They kept a garden and his mother taught him about growing fruit and vegetables. His mother became a widow in her 40s. In those days women never remarried.
When Andy was 14 he ran away to London with a childhood friend. They were picked up by police and sent home. He left for London at 17 on the Inishfallen and gives detailed description about his arrival in London, sleeping rough, getting work on building sites and his dream to go to Australia.
At 19 he left for Australia via Singapore. His first job in Perth was in a foundry. He hitchhiked to other towns and took the Indian Pacific train to Adelaide to avoid being conscripted. He spent time in Sydney and Perth and describes with humour some of the unusual jobs he had: working with horses and being the driver for an alcoholic railway manager. He recounts how his saving grace in Australia was the fact that he could play music. He started traditional music sessions in pubs in Perth and it was a great scene.
Andy describes coming back to live in Cork in May 2000. It was more complicated and expensive to get accommodation and services than in Australia. When he left Ireland was more conservative so he wasn’t prepared for how less subservient people were and how they discussed their sex lives openly at work.
There was a sense that Ireland had made a sudden jump into the Celtic Tiger. Andy noticed how much more money young people had and how much beer they drank. He felt the community spirit had gone and the new building developments didn’t take care of people’s community needs. Describes how he loves being back in Cork for the social life and knowing so many people and for the ‘ball hopping’.

Alison Morley was born and raised on the Northside in Cork. She was blind to the age of four due to an early bout of German measles. Here she recounts her personal memories of growing up in Cork. Her descriptions include: her first day at school at Scoil Mhuire in Mayfield, secondary school at South Presentation on Douglas Street, going on the hop-on nice days to Lee Fields, first Holy Communion and being a teenager having her first boyfriend.

<p>This collection focuses on a building on Grattan Street which has served as a Quaker Meeting House, a public Dispensary and as the Grattan Street Health Centre. The project was a collaboration between the CFP and the Cork North Community Work Department, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Health Services Executive HSE. </p>
<p>The interviewees fall into two main groups: those who worked in the building and those who lived in the surrounding area and availed of the services provided in the building.</p>
<p>This project follows on from the collaboration with the HSE in the “<a href="https://corkfolklore.org/archivecatalolgue/collections/show/10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HSE Orthopaedic Hospital Oral History Project (d'Orthopaedic)</a>”. There is a further connection between the two projects as many of the staff and services once provided in the Grattan Street Health Centre have now relocated to St. Mary's Health Campus (St Mary’s Primary Care Centre) Gurranabraher, the former site of the Orthopaedic Hospital. This topic of the relocation of services is also covered in some staff interviews. <br /><br />To date (October 2021) 13 interviews have been completed for the project.<br /><br />Interviewees discuss the Grattan Street building itself in terms of its historic significance, its benefits and drawbacks as a workplace. Broader themes related to or inspired by the building are also touched on including: personal relationship with the building, staff camaraderie, the problems with parking, memorable incidents at work, patient experiences and descriptions of the people and services for which the building catered.<br /><br />Healthcare professional interviewees detail their training, career progression and comparisons between Grattan Street and other workplaces. Their testimonies also provide a link with the community of patients they served giving further insight into attitudes to healthcare, diseases, vaccines, description of social conditions and the changes in medicine and technology in their working lives.<br /><br />Non-healthcare professional interviewees describe childhood experiences in or around Grattan Street (The Marsh or The Middle Parish), the social, cultural and economic conditions of the area, tenements, businesses, attitudes to and experiences of healthcare, vaccines, diseases, medicines and medical professionals as well as observed changes in these areas over time.<br /><br />Interviewees also reflect on the possible future uses of the Grattan Street building.<br /><br /><strong>Related Reference Sources</strong></p>

<p>Artist Edith O’Regan-Cosgrave (also an interviewee for the project) created a visual artwork based around the Grattan Street Medical Centre building itself, as a workplace and health centre. The artwork incorporated direct quotations from the oral history interviews conducted for the project, and also included brief historical paragraphs about the building researched, written and edited by the <a href="https://corkfolklore.org/community-oral-history-outreach-officer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CFP Community Oral History Outreach Officer</a> Kieran Murphy. This exhibition was launched on 6<sup>th</sup> February 2020 in “St Peter’s” on the North Main Street where a “Listening Event” was also held to mark the occasion.</p>

<p>Grew up in Balbriggan County Dublin, seaside town between Dublin and Drogheda. When growing up she was allowed to Drogheda to shop by herself but not to Dublin because Drogheda was considered a safer town. [Jane mentions that Drogheda is not considered safe at present this is an allusion to drug gang related violence in Drogheda which was in the news around the time of the interview.]</p>
<p>Also mentions Skerries as a seaside town in County Dublin. Went to school in Loreto Convent in Balbriggan at 4 and finished when 17 and refused the nuns’ offer to stay another year. Stayed in the same school for primary and secondary school, the benefit of which is having the same people with you.</p>
<p>Had a school reunion about a year previously. Some of her classmates she didn’t recognise, but some of their names she also didn’t recognise.</p>
<p>Says she loves Balbriggan.</p>

<p><strong>Moving House as Child</strong></p>
<p>Balbriggan and Skerries were just 4 miles apart, moved to Skerries when a teenager but considers herself to be from Balbriggan. Rivalry between the two towns and Skerries is considered to be nicer.</p>
<p>Balbriggan was more “Wavin pipes”, more industry, Skerries was more for tourists. There was a holiday camp called Red Island that people in Dublin used to go to in Skerries. It was like the holiday camp in Dirty Dancing. [3:27-3:33 Aoife O’Brien who had been interviewed for the Grattan Street Project previously walks into the room at this point.]</p>
<p>Skerries would have considered itself snobby as it has a rugby and sailing club.</p>
<p>Even though she moved to Skerries she still went to school in Ballbriggan which was “not the done thing”. Her brothers went to school in Skerries and are married and live in Skerries.</p>
<p>Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan which has been there forever and she remembers going there for her Holy Communion breakfast.</p>

<p>It was a small group making their holy communion in the convent church rather than the town church. It was special in the sense that there were few children making their communion. Kathleen Gavin was given the wrong time for the communion and turned up an hour late and “the nuns ate her” and the nuns wouldn’t admit that they gave her the wrong time and she had to bring it in the next day to prove it to them. Kathleen still tells that story and is traumatised by it. She had to make her first holy communion by herself.</p>
<p>It was a lovely sunny day and they all stood on the steps of the convent for a photograph. Confirmation was made in town.</p>
<p>Now people will have a meal out after a communion or confirmation but in Jane’s time that was not always the case. But her aunt who lived next door brought her to the Grand Hotel (now the Bracken Court Hotel Balbriggan) for a lunch/brunch after the ceremony. And this was “a huge deal” because it was not a common occurrence at the time.</p>
<p>For confirmation there were a few schools being confirmed at once. And there was a line of boys and a line of girls being confirmed at the same time in the church. All the girls wanted to be kneeling beside John Conway a boy who everyone fancied.</p>

<p><strong>Games when growing up</strong></p>
<p>She wasn’t big into sport. Lived in a big old haunted house which her grandmother left to her mother. It was near the sea. As children they were allowed onto the rocks by themselves.</p>
<p>She played basketball in school but was not very good at it. Didn’t like that kind of confrontation.</p>
<p>Played by the sea, it wasn’t a beach but rocks. Picnics and playing. Her dad built a ship in the garden, with a deck and sails. She was a big fan of Enid Blyton books as a child, especially the Secret Seven and the ‘Famous Five’ books. Her dad build them a Secret Seven type hut in the garden. As children they “went on mysteries”. They followed one man in imitation of the Enid Blyton books and decided that he was a smuggler. And they followed him up to a Martello Tower where he happened to be going to urinate.</p>
<p>They had more freedom then, allowed to leave in the morning and return in the evening. That was the norm and there wasn’t the supervision that is present today.</p>

<p>Fancourt: big Georgian house. She hated leaving the house as a child. It was very expensive to keep the house and there were also rates to pay. In addition there were fees to pay for the convent school and there was five children going to school.</p>
<p>So they moved to a smaller house in Skerries.</p>
<p>Fancourt: Three storey, basement and land attached to it but there was more but it was sold to try to keep the house. Discusses the house and its jointly owned green area with the neighbouring houses.</p>
<p>Haunted house: where priests were staying which was her sister’s bedroom- she saw a ghost of a monk. Other stories of ghosts including knocking on doors and foxhunters.</p>

<p>When you knelt down your uniform had to touch the ground. Ward sister demanded to see under Jane’s uniform to see she was wearing a slip under her uniform.</p>
<p>Nurses were allowed to wear a cardigan at night but had to take it off in the morning.</p>
<p>A nurse went to Saudi Arabia where she was murdered.</p>
<p>Thinks they were strict about stupid things. Discipline was important. No one thought to question it.</p>

<p>Did midwifery in Rotunda. The Scottish matron didn’t hire any of the students but hired Scottish nurses.</p>
<p>Jane & fellow midwifery students boycotted the graduation event in protest at this. Matron spoke to them individually. A brave nurse refused to answer any questions unless her union representative. Jane’s class is the only one not to have a group photo because of the boycott.</p>
<p>People didn’t defy superiors at the time.</p>

<p>Overnight Jane became Assistant Director, and colleagues at same grade insisted on calling her Senior Public Health Nurse which was the previous title.</p>
<p>Recalls an Assistant Director who was victimised in a more severe way to Jane which went to mediation.</p>
<p>It went away but it was nasty at the time Jane says.</p>
