Cork, Ireland, 1950s-2000s
Noreen Cronin: Shandon, The North Infirmary, Childhood
Life History:
Noreen grew up in a tenement in Dominick Street next to Shandon in the early 1950s. She went to the North Pres School and worked at the North Infirmary. Her mother used to deliver babies in the area and helped to wash and lay out the dead. Her father worked in the Asphalt Company and had an extra job at the Opera House.
Noreen remembers American tourists giving her money in Shandon because she looked ‘real’ Irish with her red hair and freckles.
She talks about the Firkin Crane and the Butter Factory.
Noreen also mentions working sewing caps and hats in O'Gorman's factory and how the men all drank tea out of jam jars.
She recalls shops in Shandon Street; Spithere’s where they used to get salted butter and they’d bring a jug to get milk direct from the churn; Paddy Twomeys for offal and bodice and tails, Ormonde and Aherns where you got bread for 50c, JJ Welch’s sold perfume and face cream and operated a book system and Buckleys which sold dresses and uniforms
Noreen goes on to describes the milk and cake shops they went to. Mentions An Stád on Leitrim Street and Nosey O’Keefe’s where they bought sweets.
Recalls Jerry Healy's pawn shops and the return of the Sunday suits on a Monday.
Noreen describes how her grandmother, sister, herself worked at The North Infirmary.
She remembers the childhood games they played, skippy, picky, rounders, release, marbles, spin the bottle, Bob and Joan’s and the songs they used to sing whilst playing. Swimming at the Mardyke and the Lee. At that time children could be arrested for playing football on the street.
Delivering babies and the washing and laying out of the dead and wakes.
Describes the household chores: washing the ware and old washing boards.
She also talks about her aunts going for half pints in the snug. Mentions Jack Brown’s pub in Dominick Street and Nellie Naughton and Paddy Donoghue who sang there.
Recalls the food they ate; tripe, Drisheen, offal, hack bone and stews. They drank beef tea when sick. Rasa and currant cake at Christmas.
Talks about the night the Opera House burned down.
Ceilis and old-time waltzing, and watching The Dixielanders (The Dixies) at St Francis Hall. Watching other Big bands at The Arcadia.
Bonfire Night and drinking Rasa and orange juice.
Travelling on the Inisfallen and emigration.
Cork prisons and a man being arrested for stealing a loaf of bread.

Liam Ó hUigín: Henry Street, The Marshes, Childhood
Life History:
Liam grew up in Henry Street during the 1940s. He talks about the marshes of Cork and Pike’s Marsh, named after a Quaker merchant family.
He recalls the practice of adding “a” to the end of some placenames, such as Pana for Patrick Street. There were many more shops in his day, and shopping was done in small amounts because there were no fridges. He remembers the various shops in Henry Street. Bills were paid weekly and at Christmas, regular customers were given a present. Glass bottles could be redeemed for pennies at Ogilvy and Moore’s. He borrowed bicycles from visitors to the Mercy Hospital while they visited patients. He talks about William Penn, who went on to found Pennsylvania, USA. Cake shops and poor hygiene. Bath time and being given syrup of figs. Robert Day’s shop used to be at Dunnes Stores, Patrick Street (which opened in 1944). He recalls shops which sold comics; these could be swapped between friends later.
Wartime meant that food was rationed and gas masks were issued, specially fitted for each member of the household. He talks in detail about the types of sweets that were available; a Lucky Ball might have a coin inside it. He recalls milk and cake shops, known as milk and nods.
Liam talks in detail about the old pubs of the city and tells a story about a man hiding in a pub. He talks about the lanes of Cork and the churches; Catholic churches had to be called chapels. Henry Street, Grattan Street and Sheares Street were all built on what used to be rivers.
Shawlies would work as poultry pluckers.
Crafts and industries included Farm Products, Hornibrook Builders, Charlie Nolan’s that dealt in butter and feathers; tinsmiths, box-makers; quilters sewed and sold quilts. He details the slang language for different coins. He lists a lot of childhood games played by boys and girls. Cigarette cards were called 'fagas'. He recalls many slang words they used when he was a child. He lists the many characters that used to frequent the city such as Mackey Gumboil.
There were tenement houses in Blarney Street, Barrack Street and The Marshes. They had one outside toilet, and sheets of newspaper were used as toilet paper. Houses did not have clocks, and time was told by the movement, arrival and departure of various groups of people. They got free shoes from Cork Corporation.
He lists some famous sportsmen who came from Cork and The Marsh. He tells the story of how the Shaky Bridge came to be built.

Cork, Ireland, 1940s-2000s
Kevin Leahy: Gurranabraher, Irish Army, Docklands,
Life History:
Kevin was born (circa late 1930s) in Kelly’s Lane (later Boyce’s Street). His father was in the British Army and later the forces of the Irish Free State. When Kevin was 14 he went to work as a plumber.
He remembers Blarney Street, and women who wore large petticoats and played ‘gadgets’ (accordions). He moved to Gurranabraher; and later to Farranree.
He talks about some childhood games he played, such as ‘Kick the Can’ (which he explains), steering cars, icing the road in winter to go skating.
He recalls being told in the 1940s not to play with children from families who had been informers during the Civil War.
He remembers the names of some of the lanes around Blarney Street. People in the area boiled crubeens, others sold flowers, all from the doorways of their houses.
Kevin talks about a local character called Damie Goggins.
How steernas were made.
Kevin’s mother (née Burke) sang thousands of songs, among them ‘The Irish Brigade’ (he sings a verse). His maternal grandmother was a formidable woman who liked to drink and fight.
There was a milk and cake shop, Mrs Cotter’s, in Blarney Street, where you got a pint of milk and a whole cake, the latter sometimes Donkey’s Drudge Cake.
Meeting the opposite sex had to be done on the sly.
He talks about the origin of the word ‘langer’.
Kevin joined the army and served in the Congo [early 1960s].
Women couldn’t drink in pubs, unless in snugs; men and women’s lives were completely separate. He explains that pubs closed at 7pm at night, after which men gathered, talked, sang and fought in the street until midnight.
As a child Kevin used to eat various sweets, ‘Munster Selection’, candy apples, twisted candy, ice cream.
He details the pranks he played as a child, slogging apples from the Sunbeam gardens, and how kids could sneak into the Lido cinema.
People kept animals, including goats.
He worked on the docks after he came out of the army, and talks a little about the work and the dockers he knew. He tells a funny story about meeting some visiting Americans.

Tom Spalding: North Main Street
North Main Street and South Main Street
In this interview, Tom Spalding, a local historian and author, discusses his research methods and interests concerning the development of the North and South Main Street area over time. His interest lies primarily in what he calls “street furniture” – street signage and other fixtures on the street within public areas (such as benches, bronze plaques, and post boxes). When prompted, he discusses the nature of changing street names within Cork: streets like Wellington Road will have multiple other street names associated with them and for which the properties receive their own address numbers, such as Montpellier Terrace, Connaught Place, and Garfield Terrace. Tom also lists Paradise Place on the corner of South Main Street and Castle Street, as another example of this phenomenon and describes the history behind the name “Paradise”. He also states that names may have been changed on paper, which can be traced through painstaking archival research reaching back 150 years, but that street names did not necessarily always catch on “on the ground”. Another topic of discussion is where North Main Street ends and South Main Street begins. Tom presents evidence for the divide occurring at the Liberty Street and Castle Street junction, explaining that Washington Street would have been cut through the medieval part of the city in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is some discussion of local pubs and businesses that Tom frequents: Leaders, the Benny McCabe pubs, the Raven, the Vicarstown, and the Castle. Lastly, Tom gets into a discussion of renovations and construction over old ‘street furniture’ evidence of prior businesses and old artisanship within the city. Some examples he lists are the renovation of North Main Street “20 years ago” (in the 1990s) as well as City Council pedestrianizing Prince’s Street in the 1980s. He advocates keeping things that are of heritage value that are still in functioning order and do not present a hazard to pedestrians.
