Padraig O’Horgain: Church Street, Funeral Customs, Republicanism,
Life History:
Padraig O’Horgain (Pat Horgan) was born in Church Street in 1951. His father was a Republican and was interned in Britain between 1939 and 1946. His father later worked at Cork Harbour.
O’Gorman’s hat factory and other businesses were cited in the street. Women in the area still wore shawls up to the mid-1960s. He remembers a travellers’ encampment at Bontys, off Knocknaheeny.
Padraig played handball. People played hurling; Gaelic football was not popular.
He recalls Cork characters The Rancher and Baby Joe.
Men walked behind hearses; women went instead to the church.
At Corpus Christi he was a flower boy; he kissed flowers and threw them at people.
In secondary school, they had a long lunch break so they could go home to be fed. The kinds of meals that were eaten during the week; how shopping was done.
His father kept cage birds. He talks about members of his extended family.

Mary Morgan
Life History;
Mary Was born in west Cork near Kilmichael in 1922, her parents were small farmers. Their house and that of her grandmothers were ‘safehouses’ during the war of independence and civil war. In her twenty’s she moves to the city to work in public houses run by her sisters (The Gables on Douglas St, The Phoenix on Union Quay, and another unnamed bar on Patrick's Quay.) In the city she met her husband and subsequently opened a shop in Togher. Soon after she took up residence in her home in Glasheen where she raised her family and still resides today.

Mary Morgan talks about her childhood and memories of growing up in West Cork. Her parents surviving the Spanish Flu of 1918 and her oldest sister being born prematurely. She remembers the impact of the Economic War in the 1930s. She recounts some of the stories she heard about the War of Independence and Civil War. Arrests by the Black and Tans and some lucky escapes by IRA members. Tom Barry’s wife having tea at their house. On her father’s belief in hospitality. Recollections of moving up to Cork city and working in pubs owned by her sisters, before marrying and opening a shop of her own. Hearing a first-hand account of the Famine from a neighbour. Clashes between Blueshirts and Republicans at Platform Dances in West Cork.

Her first impressions of living in Cork city and how it differed from the countryside. On family who emigrated to America and other parts of the world. Running a shop and eventually moving to Glasheen. Remembering hearing ghost stories from the old men in West Cork.

Alice Delay: Togher, Country Life, Childhood
Life History:
Alice remembers visiting her grandmother in Togher, which was the country, and eating bread and home-made butter. Her grandfather was a farm labourer. The house had an earth floor, and a ceiling made of sewn flour bags. Someone described the house as a cow shed with a door. It had a lean-to for the hens.
Her mother used to knit jumpers after being given the wool, which was weighed afterwards to see if she had stolen any. Alice comments on social relations with better off Cork families.
Rasa used to be sold for a penny.
She mentions her family's involvement in the War of Independence and the Civil War. Alice also talks about her father working in London during the Blitz.
Alice describes the Lido Cinema as a fleapit. She recalls having to have a penny for the ‘black babies’ collection. She used to go slogging apples, and her mother would make an apple tart. She talks about bonfire night in her youth and in modern times.
