Roger Herlihy: Barrack Street, Saint Fin Barre’s cathedral, William Burgess, Elizabeth Fort, Jimmy Page, Pavilion cinema, Second World War
Cork's Built Heritage
Ronnie talks about some of the buildings of the South Parish, such as Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral and Elizabeth Fort, and comments on some related photographs.
Ronnie (b. circa 1963)talks about the laying of the foundation stone for Saint Fin Barre’s and the introduction of ‘the goldie angel’, a statue that was afterwards said to be the herald of the end of the world. The architect was William Burgess, and guitarist Jimmy Page, who lives in the architect’s house, came to Cork in 2005 to talk about Burgess. Ronnie tells a story about people hearing what they thought was a ghost in the cathedral and exhuming a recent burial, only to find that the strange noises were coming from owls in the belfry.
He mentions Elizabeth Fort, and the Gateway Bar, believed to have been established in 1698, and the oldest surviving pub in Cork city. During the Second World War, the fort housed an air raid shelter, and he names other shelter locations in the city.
Ronnie discusses a photograph of the old barracks building in Barrack Street, which dated to the 1700s and which was burned out during the Civil War. The barracks were housed in Elizabeth Fort, and he gives a history of the buildings’ use.

Peggy Kelleher: The Lough, Marriage, World War 2
Life History:
Peggy (born 1930s) grew up in Hartland's Road, near The Lough. She was an only child. Her father, William Power, from County Waterford; he worked at the Munster Arcade and lived through the Burning of Cork by the Black and Tans in 1920; he was involved in the old IRA and the War of Independence. Her parents married in 1928. Her mother, Gertrude Murphy, came from Youghal, and worked in the Post Office; she was an independent woman whom Peggy describes as a feminist.
Local shops were almost like community centres, where news was exchanged. She remembers a house shop run by the Carey sisters, and a local butcher that sold meat displayed uncovered.
She talks about childhood games, being watched over by mothers, and early bedtimes. Reading books was popular in her house.
Her father worked for 40 years without illness by died from cancer at 57.
Gas for cooking at home was rationed because of the Second World War. She recalls the jobs she used to do around the house as a child.
She recalls a story her father told about a marriage match.
Peggy describes the meal times of the day and what was eaten. The meat had to be bought fresh each day. The only fruit and vegetables used were those which happened to be in season. Fish had to be eaten every Friday; sometimes it was dried, salted fish.
She recalls childhood games; boys and girls played separately.
She went to a private school and then to commercial college, and ended up working as a dentist’s assistant. She got married when she was about 23.
She recalls teenage dances, hanging around in groups rather than as couples, and dances monitored by nuns. Girls expected to be married by the time they were 25.
Peggy compares the lives of modern children to that of her generation and wishes the present generation learned that happiness was simple and not based on materialism.
She recalls a number of pranks she played as a child.

Margaret Farmer, Catherine McCarthy, Helen Donovan: The Emergency; The Black and Tans;
Life History;
Margaret remembers that her father used to shout “Up the Mollies” when he had drink taken. [Note: These particular Mollies were agitators controlled by Joseph Devlin MP in opposition to William O’Brien]. She recalls the days of the Black and Tans; on her Communion day a bomb went off in Cork, this was the Blackpool Bombing where several RIC officers were killed, and the tram she was in was stopped and passengers were taken off. She also talks about a raid by the Black And Tans on a neighbours house. They talk briefly about historical Irish figures, including President Seán T O’Kelly, who they say was nicknamed “The Leprechaun”. Margaret recounts that Noonan’s Road is named after two of her cousins killed by the Black and Tans. She talks about rationing during the war and the difficulties of using flour. Tea could be made from fried, grated carrot. Coal was carried along in a boxcar, which had two wheels and was pulled by too long handles. She talks briefly about “the glimmer man”, an official who checked houses for using rationed gas. She sings a verse of “The Night the Goat Broke Loose on Grand Parade”. She remembers being issued with gas masks during the Second World War; and the interviewees recall air raid sirens going off in Cork, and the locations of several air raid shelters. She sings a verse of a song about rationing [adapted from the song “Bless Em All”]. She finishes by singing a verse of a song beginning with “My lovely rose has lost its crimson gold…”
Margaret made a reference to the television, her son Donal Farmer, played the part of the priest in the series "Glenroe".

Frances McCarthy and Betty O’Mahony: The Dixies, Christy O'Mahony
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Frances has always lived on the Northside. She was born in Poulraddy, went to school in North Presentation school. When she was seven she moved to Ballyvolane and went to school at St Patrick’s College, Gardiner’s Hill, and Mayfield Community School. After she married she lived in Fairhill, and then in Tivoli. (The other interviewee, Betty O’Mahony, is her mother.)
Frances talks about her father, Christy, who was a musician with The Dixies showband. She describes the extent of the Northside area, which she says consists of Fairhill, Churchfield, Farranree, and Blackpool.

Fergal Crowley: Patrick Street, Munster Arcade, Black and Tans
Life History:
Fergal worked in the Munster Arcade, Patrick Street. He describes the shop. His father started work there in 1901. After the building was burned by the Black and Tans during the Burning of Cork, the British government paid to have buildings on one side of the street rebuilt.
He remembers and names all the old cinemas of Cork. There was a milk and cake shop near O’Sullivan’s Quay. During the Second World War, he was issued with a gas mask; rationing continued until 1951.
He tells a funny story about a Guard and not having a light on his bike. He notes that the city was safe, and contrasts it with today’s more violent society.
Fergal talks again about the Munster Arcade; how clothes were displayed. He tells a funny story about sleeping at work and one employee sneaking out to a dance.

Alice Delay: Togher, Country Life, Childhood
Life History:
Alice remembers visiting her grandmother in Togher, which was the country, and eating bread and home-made butter. Her grandfather was a farm labourer. The house had an earth floor, and a ceiling made of sewn flour bags. Someone described the house as a cow shed with a door. It had a lean-to for the hens.
Her mother used to knit jumpers after being given the wool, which was weighed afterwards to see if she had stolen any. Alice comments on social relations with better off Cork families.
Rasa used to be sold for a penny.
She mentions her family's involvement in the War of Independence and the Civil War. Alice also talks about her father working in London during the Blitz.
Alice describes the Lido Cinema as a fleapit. She recalls having to have a penny for the ‘black babies’ collection. She used to go slogging apples, and her mother would make an apple tart. She talks about bonfire night in her youth and in modern times.
