This collection of eight interviews concentrates on Cork City’s historic spine, North and South Main Streets. These streets link the island of the city centre with the North and South Sides of the city. They form a shopping and business area, which has also served a residential purpose down through the years. Although our broader collection contains much description of and stories from the area, these interviews (carried out between January and March 2015 and totalling 4 hours 28 minutes in duration) focus specifically on the streets, their past and their future. Interviewees include residents of the streets and their environs and those who work and have worked there, and the interviews encompass memories of the area from the 1940s onwards, descriptions of change in the area, and reflection on the area’s future. Interviews were carried out with local residents, one of whom is a local historian, representatives of three multi-generational family businesses (Leader’s clothing, the North Gate Pharmacy and Bradley’s Off-licence), a South Main Street resident and city planner, a cityscape historian, and a promoter who was particularly active in organising events in the nightclub Sir Henry’s in the late 1980s and early 1990s. MS: It might sound like kind of a stupid question now, but people actually give different answers. For you, where would the South Main Street start?
NH : Yeah, the South Main Street for me funnily enough now, myself and my sister now were talking about that the other day and to me the South Main Street started at Washington Street. You know the junction of Washington Street? And from that back up to the top of Barrack Street was the South and as you crossed the lights, I can’t even remember if there were lights there at the time, the junction there and from that down then was the North Main Street. I don’t know if I’m right or wrong like but that’s, that’s what I would have thought of like, ‘cause you went down as far there. You know, you might kind of, that there’d be shops down ‘long there now, the way you’d kind of would have advanced and you kinda got maybe some lino, or some wallpaper like that, there’d be a newer shop down there and we’d say go down to the end of the South Main Street. You know where, the locality would be where we were living. I was living around by am, Nicholas Church Place , where the, the old Nicholas Church Church is and so like there in the locality there was loads of shops for when you needed to do something bigger, she could have advanced a bit more. We would go to the North Main Street and that’d be a grand day to us there like to kind of go up to the North ‘cause we’ve cousins in the Northside we could meet them, you know that kinda thing like so.

Noreen Hanover was born in 1950 and grew up in the South Main Street area until 1975. Her family would have done most of their shopping on South Main Street and she relates the character of the shops there, their different purposes, as well as what hasn’t changed in the time since she lived there.
Noreen Hanover was born in 1950 and lived around Nicholas Church Place on the Southside of Cork until 1975. In this interview, she discusses the character and use of South Main Street, focusing a great deal on the types of shops that would have been present during her time there. She states that she would have been sent, as a child, to buy ‘loose’ ingredients for her mother – sugar, milk, a few eggs, etc. – and relates that she might have picked up an apple or an orange while shopping as well. She relates that she and a friend of hers used to go and look in the windows of the toy shops, near Christmas time, but that they would never have asked for anything in particular. Shops she lists as being largely the same or still in their old locations are The Enterprise (which was a pub and is now also a restaurant), the Brown Derby, and Twomey’s (on Barrack Street). When prompted, she describes what she defines as the beginning of South Main Street (beginning with the Washington Street junction) and where North Main Street would have started. She relates that going by bus to the Northside was a special treat as they would only rarely have been able to afford bus fare. Noreen also describes various shops that would have been on South Main Street: large department stores for men, bargain stores where they would have gotten free shoes as part of social welfare, spinsters running newspaper and comic shops, and Kilgrew’s toy shop. She mentions specifically that Patrick Street would have been an area for richer people to shop. Lastly, she discusses that before TV, which would have been introduced when she was approximately 11 or 12, her mother used to tell stories, many of which related to the local character and shops of South Main Street and the South Side of Cork.

In 2013, the Cork Folklore Project was commissioned by Cork City Council as part of Cork Heritage Open Day to create a film exploring the relationship between some of Cork's most historic buildings and the people who use them. The project carried out a series of interviews with local historians, people associated with the buildings, and Cork residents (the interviews in this collection were carried out by Mark Wilkins), and drew on existing audio and video interviews. Interviews in this collection featured in the DVD discuss the Trinity Presbyterian Church, the National Sculpture Factory, the Custom House/Port of Cork, the Pavilion, the Masonic Hall, Triskel/Christchurch, Cork Vision Centre, South Presentation Convent, Elizabeth Fort, St. Fin Barre's Cathedral, UCC Crawford Observatory and Blackrock Castle Observatory. The overall built heritage project was continued throughout 2013 and 2014 in order to create an interview collection and DVD on the other buildings featured in Cork Heritage Open Day. Interviews about UCC Boole Library and Cork City Opera House, which were not featured in the first DVD, form part of this collection. The DVD was edited by Ian Stephenson, and featured music by Mark Wilkins and photography by Gráinne McGee. The project was co-ordinated by Mary O’Driscoll.
The film contributed to Cork City Council’s Cork Heritage Open day, winning the Irish Heritage Council Heritage Week 2013 Award for the Best Interactive Event.
A second DVD was produced by the Cork Folklore Project in 2015, drawing on further interviews carried out by Mark Wilkins, entitled If the Stones Could Speak.

M W: That’s very good. Ok [pause], the crooked steeple, you're probably sick of telling people about the story of the crooked steeple.
J F: Well it’s a good story, now Chris Southgate who is a heritage architect in Cork and has done some work for us. He got a cherry picker up and got a good look at it and assured me it was just, weathering on the weather side, after it was built, you know, the prevailing wind and rain washed and watered out on one side and so it tilted in that direction but they are lots, and I am happy that it is reasonably safe, we had a bit of work done back in 2010 just before the President came and some beautiful photographs were in The Echo at that time. [Pause] Chris tells me it’s quite safe so that’s good, all sorts of stories that the workmen back in 1861 had a row with the architect, could happen so he did it on purpose or even and then they were drunk and that when the scaffolding came off and on the whole, the sign of their drunkenness was all there. The worst story maybe I shouldn’t even tell you this, but two gentlemen, I was working away in the Church grounds and the garden just dressed in ordinary clothes, and two Cork men came in just to see the church, and they said to me, I won’t try a Cork accent because I come from the North but they said you know the boy that designed this church, he hanged himself in that tower and I said don’t you tell me that. It was the first time I ever heard that and they were convinced, what it, I never heard that story before and I would deny it, what I think they were mixing up was the tragic story about Christ The King Church down at Turners Cross, where they was a over, a huge overrun apparently, and the story is that the architect, did take his own life.
M W: Lynch is that his name, was it?
J F: It may have been yeah.
M W: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
J F: So I think they mixed up the two stories but --
M W: Yeah.
J F: So we have a crooked spire but it is quite safe and there is no, as far as I know, no tragic story with it.
M W: Okay, I like the idea of the guys been drunk or maybe just doing it to spite the architect or something kind of, there is something very Cork about that.
J F: Well that is there is no documentary evidence for that.
M W: Yeah I know, there is always a rational explanation which is not as amusing or entertaining.
J F: Walter Burrell whose, who used to be a seamen’s missionary on the docks of Cork, he had these wonderful slide shows and I was there with him once in a National School showing slides about the ships and the docks and he says, quick as a fire there is the crooked spire of Trinity Presbyterian which represents, represents the crooked mans nature, he said, of human beings and I thought well Walter that’s as good an explanation as any, a good reminder [laughs] so.

Minister Farris talks about the history of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, York Street.
He talks about the present church building, which was established in 1861. He comments on its crooked steeple and the stories associated with it. The site of the church may once have been a drovers’ field for animals brought into the city. Some of the congregation continued to worship at an earlier church in Queen Street (Father Mathew Street), a decision informed by distinctions of social class.
The church got an organ in 1904, supplied by the Cork firm of Magahy. The church had been built in a Gothic style by English architect John Tarring.
Minister Farris talks about members of the congregation who died in the First World War.

Description
An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. F.Q: Coming back to Cork, em had you any kind of funny things em happen when you arrived first, you know misunderstandings or?
L.S.S: Em not, the only thing I remember was when I was in hospital having Charlotte my daughter in Finbarr’s, em the first time I was in hospital I was having a threatened miscarriage you know at twelve weeks, and I had to spend five, six days on a ward, and I do remember the whole religious thing hit me because nobody at that point you know when you go into a hospital the first thing they ask you after your name and address is your religion, and I kind of had a hard time getting my head around that, so I took a big deep breath and said I was Jewish, and the woman kind of looked at me strange. Then when I was on the ward I was in the middle bed of one side, so they were you know six bedded ward, and I was in the middle, and on Sunday morning they came and they curtained me off, and I thought what’s going on here, and you’d be scared back then because I was afraid that I was going to have a miscarriage, and em plus I was older than most people – I was thirty when I had my daughter so I was nervous, and they come in and they put all the curtains around me, and I say to the nurse what’s going on, and then they set up an altar at the end of the ward, and they obviously were going to serve Mass on a Sunday morning. And she said, and I said is there something wrong with me, is there a problem, is the doctor coming, is there something wrong; oh no she said, no, no, no, no, we’re just going to have Mass, and I said so why are you curtaining me off, oh we wouldn’t think it would be right for you to watch! And I remember thinking that was strange. And then the women on the ward, who were lovely, they were lovely women – we had such a good time together actually, except for the ones who were sad who might have had a miscarriage. But they were all passing around Holy Cards, and of course I thought this was hilarious, and they were passing me over, you know, would you like this one, or would you like this one, and sticking them into their bras and that kind of stuff you know; and I thought you know again that was very strange and funny. And then finally when I had Charlotte then, Thank God I didn’t have the miscarriage and I had her, but she was a very premature baby, and she was in the Special Care Unit in Finbarr’s em and a woman, so she wasn’t on the bed next to me, and a woman stopped me in the corridor one day, and I had her in August, and I was up on a farm before that so I was sitting out and I’m dark skinned anyway and I’d gone very tanned from the summer, so this woman stopped me on the ward, and she said oh you’re the one who had the miracle baby! And I said what do you mean the miracle baby? She was very premature, she was under four pounds, but she’s fine! And she said, no, no, no, you’re the black woman who had the white baby. (Laughs). Which amused me.

Liz was born into an upper middle class, liberal, Jewish family in 1948 in a suburb of New Jersey, USA. She has one brother and one sister. Her maternal grandparents lived close and were part of their family life. Her father commuted daily to New York City for work. Her grandparents were all immigrants into the States. Liz went to Vassar College, then a private women’s college in New York state. She and her husband came to Ireland in the 1970’s.
She played a range of childhood games in her neighbourhood particularly a game called ‘swamp fox’ which involved playing in sewerage overflow.
There is a good story about her grandmother who was a ‘flapper’ and party girl in the twenties and how they were all into show music, especially George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Divorce was unusual and difficult in the 1930s. Her grandmother had to travel to Nevada to get a ‘quickie’ divorce. She was a character.
As a family they didn’t keep kosher, but were aware as children that their tradition and heritage was Jewish. Their diet contained some Jewish food like brisket, pickled herrings and matzos.
Discusses how her parents started a reformed Jewish (non-Orthodox???) synagogue in a space shared by the Presbyterian church. They went there for Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah. Ethnic grouping was very important and socialising happened within your group. Liz was the only family member who was interested in observing Jewish religious holidays.
Originally Liz and her husband came to Dublin in 1974 through a university research fellowship. They came to Cork in 1977 when her husband got a job at Crawford Art Gallery she just says “the Crawford” so she could mean the school??.
They loved Ireland and were happy to be outside of the US because of their anti Vietnam war views. Their first impressions of Cork were of how grim it was and that there were lots of derelict buildings. Merchant’s Quay, for example, was all boarded up.
Liz gives a very humorous account of giving birth to her daughter Charlotte in St Finbarrs and how religious the hospital was. There were lots of holy pictures and crucifixes. How they closed off her bed with a curtain when mass was said in the ward.
There is a lot of good description about The English market and her Saturday morning ritual of going there to shop.
Liz discusses the dwindling of the Jewish community in Cork and the closure of the orthodox synagogue for Jewish New Year because there aren’t enough people to open it. How traditional the rules are that insist on women sitting up stairs.
Liz discusses the role of women in the synagogue and the differences between the Cork Orthodox community and the more liberal experience of her childhood.

Description
An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. C.O'C: What was Gurranebraher like in the early days?
K.O'C Well I remember my mother now and my aunt when they were young, they used to come up Gurranebraher for their walks, you know their walks of a Sunday, maybe their walks in the evening after school, and it was only countryside, all fields. And then I remember when we were very young my mother would take us up what’s Knocknaheeny now do you know Knocknaheeny up there and I can see her she’d be in the field knitting: they were all knitters: all the mothers were great knitters, the little jumpers and the little dresses because it was cheaper to knit. And we’d be jumping over the ditches going from one field to the other so you see that was countryside to me when I was young, and it’s all built up now, and this place was countryside to people sort of in my mothers area and era, and it’s all kind of built up now. But it was lovely when we came up and no matter where we went, what’s Churchfield now is all fields, so we’d be over around Churchfield and we’d have great laugh, there’d be little ponds and you’d be gathering up the grass, and you’d be putting it into the ponds so that the water would rise you know. Even Sun Valley Drive down there now that’s how we would used to go and come to school, it was all fields, there was one big, big slope and we’d be running up the slope and running down and running up the slope and you might be an hour or two late coming from school and you would be murdered because your dinner would be burnt in the oven or in the pot, but it was lovely. Then we used to go out Fairhill – that was all countryside – and farmers, it was all kind of farming land really: you’d be looking in at the cows grazing, and we used to go . . .

Kay was born in Wolfe Tone Street and lived there until she was seven when the family moved to Gurranabraher. Her father was born in St Mary’s Road and her mothers family came from Kanturk. Kay went to St Vincent’s School.

BM: I remember certain teachers that I had a grá for, and I remember certain teachers that I was petrified of. I think -- and teachers too I think that when we were -- even though it wasn’t too long ago, twenty years ago when we were growing up, they had this-- they had this-- there was no dividing their feelings. They either liked you or they didn’t. There was no in-between. And I don’t think that they gave people or children that time, the understanding and benefit of the doubt like they do today. I really don’t think they made the effort and maybe they didn’t like the look of you or-- if you were-- like there were other people less more fortunate than I was. Kind of grubby or untidy, or if they came from a very rundown background very poor. I think they were actually bullied more than the rest. That always stuck, I remember one girl in my class and they had nothing, absolutely nothing. Now at the time with me, nothing to you anyway but as you grew up you often start to think, I mean, think that, that she, how she ever went there I’ll never know. Putting the dunce’s hat on her head, in the middle of the classroom and making her kneel down. I can remember the nun doing that to her.

She recalls her schooldays. She believes that children from poorer backgrounds were bullied by teachers.
She talks about her Communion and Confirmation; dating and the pros and cons of marriage and having children.

Description
An account of the resource
The Cork 2005 Project was carried out and funded as part of Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2005. Building on the theme ‘City of Culture’, the project explored the questions: ‘What is the everyday culture of Cork City?’ and ‘Who are the people of the city?’, and aimed to broaden our archival holdings to reflect the increased numbers of migrants making their home in the city. 37 ethnographic interviews were carried out with Cork residents, more than two-thirds of whom had come to Cork from elsewhere, exploring their relationship with the cultural and social landscape of the city. The interviews include accounts of family life and growing up in Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa Ukraine, and the United States.
A six-part radio series, entitled ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio in 2005, and a book of the same name was published in 2006. You can listen to the radio programmes on our website: How's it goin', boy? Radio Series.
The interviews in this collection all have a similar structure. We asked all interviewees to describe their childhood neighbourhoods and communities and to discuss their relationship with Cork city in the present day. We also discussed experiences of migrancy, first impressions and cultural contact with those who had come to Cork from elsewhere and with Corkonians who had experience of migration. Interviewees came from diverse areas including Australia, the Marsh, Nigeria, Brittany, Gurranabraher, Russia, Evergreen Street, Spain, Poland and Kurdish Iraq.
The collection project was carried out from March 2004 – June 2005. M.O'G: and I remember when I was going to Sullivan’s Quay school like you know and some boy was asked, “Murphy, where’s your book?” you know, “Sir, eh eh we’re all going to England, in a couple of weeks time, so Mam and Dad said there’s no point in getting books because we won’t be here”. And like the whole family, mother and parents and all the children, just everybody out. And I could see no end to it, this was going to go on forever, people were going to be emigrating forever, things would never get better, you know and everybody was coming back from England, and during the summer holidays you know you had gone over there to work they all had nice suits on, and they were able to buy the Examiner every day, and God there was really money and you know and that sense of what you did not have, was almost as important as what you did have going for you, you know.
J.M: Yeah you became acutely aware of it basically!
M.O'G: Absolutely I remember being down then at the Inisfallen, the Inisfallen used to go out three times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – and there were people throwing pennies onto the, and of course as kids you would be rushing to pick them up, you know, but there was something very sad about it, the young people all going away, and I remember being walking down Anglesea Street with my father one day, and I was about six or seven or eight and I said Dad why doesn’t the government do something about this and he said there’s nothing they can do. There was no hope, things were never going to get better, there was a sort of, I think TK Whitaker, who the man who got the Whitaker Plan going in the late 58, 59, or something he said on television that they were soul numbing days. Yeah that’s exactly the way it was, soul numbing, there was just no way out, things were never going to get better, there was no point even trying, because nothing was ever going to work. Thanks be to God, I was wrong, but like you know that’s the way it was.

An in-depth, evocative interview about growing up in The Middle Parish highlighting poverty and the power of education in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Mícheál Ó Geallabháin gives intimate and warm detail about family life, community spirit, class, sport, music and emigration.
Mícheál was born on 15th of October, 1945 in the South Terrace but grew up in Kyrl Street in The Middle Parish. He was the eldest of a family of seven. He has four brothers and two sisters. They moved out to Ballyphehane in the late 1950s. His father worked for Beamish Brewery.

A place-based interviewing project exploring everyday life in Cork City, with excerpts disseminated on a series of online digital maps. <br /><br />In 2010, the Cork Folklore Project initiated a new collection and dissemination project, entitled the Cork Memory Map. We wished to step up our interviewing programme and enhance public access to our holdings through the creation of an online map of stories and memories. A central concern in this initial stage was to keep our research agenda as open as possible in terms of generating accounts of everyday life in the city down through the years. As we were not carrying out topic-focussed interviews (in contrast to previous projects on topics such as song in the Northside, drag hunting and occupational lore), the place-based focus enabled us to explore everyday life at different stages of interviewees’ life histories, remaining open to cues from the interviewees while maintaining a sense of direction and purpose for all involved. The fact that the interviews were structured around memories of place, rather than taking the form of life history interviews, also had an impact on the material gathered. The initial phase of interviewing was carried out in the main with older residents of Cork City, Ireland, who grew up in the city centre or adjacent suburbs and who were born between 1929 and 1950. Lasting between 45 minutes and two hours, individual interviews in the Memory Map project tend to follow a similar pattern. A description of the interviewee’s childhood neighbourhood is followed by a succession of ‘grand tour’ questions about daily routines, work and play within the neighbourhood. Places important or familiar to interviewees were explored, as were routes habitually taken through the landscape. This narrative base was used as a springboard for using cues provided by the interviewees as the basis for follow-up questions on significant people and activities mentioned. <br />A sub-collection of shorter interviews was generated during Heritage Week (20-28 August) 2011. The Cork Folklore Project, in collaboration with Civic Trust House, launched the Memory Map Project with an exhibition and collection event throughout the week. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to ‘put themselves on the map’ through short interviews. The Memory Map also featured in a ten-minute Curious Ear documentary broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 during Heritage Week, and available as a podcast (The Curious Ear/Documentary on One (Cork City Memory Map) http://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/2011/0816/646858-curious-ear-doconone-cork-city-memory-map/).<br /><br />The bulk of the interviews were carried out between July and December 2010 (21 interviews), with 9 full-length interviews carried out in the second half of 2011, along with 18 shorter interviews carried out during heritage week, 23-27 August 2011, and 9 interviews in the second half of 2012. 1 video interview was carried out in January 2014 with Memory Map interviewee Pat Speight. The design for the map and supporting database design was carried out by Cheryl Donaghue (UCC) as project work for an MSc in Interactive Media, with assistance from Colin Mac Hale. <br />The Project received support for the further technical development of the map from the Irish Heritage Council in 2012. The map itself has undergone various iterations, the most recent being its preparation for use on the Omeka platform by the CFP team and PhD candidate Penny Johnston in 2016/2017.<br /><br />Existing and subsequent interviews from the CFP collections have also been utilised for the online mapping dissemination project: the interviews designated as ‘memory map’ interviews are those carried out specifically with the map in mind from 2010 onwards. Description
An account of the resource
Alice remembers visiting her grandmother in Togher, which was the country, and eating bread and home-made butter. Her grandfather was a farm labourer. The house had an earth floor, and a ceiling made of sewn flour bags. Someone described the house as a cow shed with a door. It had a lean-to for the hens.
Her mother used to knit jumpers after being given the wool, which was weighed afterwards to see if she had stolen any. Alice comments on social relations with better off Cork families.
Rasa used to be sold for a penny.
She mentions her family's involvement in the War of Independence and the Civil War. Alice also talks about her father working in London during the Blitz.
Alice describes the Lido Cinema as a fleapit. She recalls having to have a penny for the ‘black babies’ collection. She used to go slogging apples, and her mother would make an apple tart. She talks about bonfire night in her youth and in modern times.
