Tommy Rooney: Second City Jazzband, Cork Academy School of Music
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Tommy Rooney was born in 1931. He was reared in Crosshaven and was the eldest of nine. His father’s family were from Dublin. He joined the army in 1945 at the age of 14 and remained in the service for 12 years. He played music during some of that time with civilian bands. After the army, he played with Donny Collins in Limerick for 9 years and with Michael O’Callaghan for 7 years. He then formed The Second City Jazz Band and played with them for 20 years. Recently he has begun teaching music at the Cork Academy School of Music in Sunbeam industrial estate. He married one of the Creedon's, a well-known sporting family from Shandon Street.
Tommy talks about his life as a musician. His early days in the army as a teenager. He talks about the very start of the showband era, the bands and Cork venues, such as the Arcadia. The experience of playing in Protestant halls in Northern Ireland.

Pat Nolan: Northside, Cork Academy School of Music
Interview exploring the ‘showband era’ (late 1950s to early 1970s) in Ireland from the perspective of Cork-based musicians and family members.
Pat is from John Street on the Northside. He was educated at the North Monastery, which was good for general studies but did not teach music. The school environment was harsh. He left school early. His father bought him a second-hand saxophone, and he later learned to play the clarinet. He joined a dance band after he left school, and played around County Cork.
He talks about the beginning of the showband era; and traces the course of its decline, which he says began towards the end of the 1960s. He recalls Rory Gallagher and his connection with the showband scene, and he praises Gallagher’s rhythmic sense.
He later went to University College Cork to get a degree in music. He joined the army band: it was composed of musicians rather than soldiers.
He played at the Boom Boom Room in Belfast, but bands became nervous after the violence began there in 1969. [He misattributes the 1975 Miami Showband Massacre to 1969]. He talks about the atmosphere in Northern dancehalls.
He discusses the extent of the Northside area; he values teaching music with the Cork Academy School of Music in Sunbeam industrial estate.

Michael O’Connell: Faranree, Politics, Childhood,
Life History:
Michael was born in the 1950s and grew up in Farranferris Ave below the Church of the Redemption in Farranree. He came from a family of 13 children. He was a student at the North Mon. His mother was a great GAA fan and a sporting person who played camogie. She was an extraordinary woman who managed to raise her children with very little money. His father was a quiet, intelligent man who worked on the building line and on the docks and was interested in politics. He met his wife Catherine and they married in 1972. He worked at Blarney Woollen Mills and then B&I on the Inisfallen for 17 years and became interested in local politics in 1973. He was Deputy Lord Mayor in 1976 and Lord Mayor of Cork from 2010 to 2011.
Michael remembers his community as a fantastic place to live with an amazing sense of community. He recalls the opening of The Church of the Redemption in 1958 as a huge event with Cardinal Cushing and Bishop Lucey. He speaks about the completion of Farranree, Gurranabraher, Churchfield and Mayfield estates in the 1950s.
He fondly remembers a well known local character Andy Gaw who used to collect money to give to the local children. He mentions the games they played such as slogging apples, catching birds like redpoles and finches and hiking in Rosses Wood.
He talks humorously about the first live television they saw through a neighbour’s window.
His visits to Maddens and Cissy O'Connell's shop on Bridge Street, and going to the pawn shop on Shandon Street and Gillabbey Street for the Sunday suit.
Michael talks about how difficult it was to feed a family of thirteen and the food they ate to survive. The use of allotments to grow vegetables.
He tells a story about getting plaster of Paris removed at the North Infirmary.
Going to the cinema in the Lido. ‘Jagging’ and going for walks with girls.
How Cork has changed economically and its impact on industry and young people.
He welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to Cork in May 2010 and talks at length about the logistics of the visit.

Marie Crean: South Parish, Cinemas, Black and Tan’s
Life History:
Marie was born (in the 1950s) and reared in High Street, in the South Parish, off Douglas Street; she thinks the street was formerly Quarry Lane. Some of her area was altered to make a new road. She went to school in South Presentation.
She recalls picking blackberries and slogging apples. There were few cars and everybody walked everywhere. As a child, she travelled a lot with her family on the train.
She talks about her early working life. She worked for Hanlon’s fish merchants.
Marie remembers her old neighbourhood and how some of it was demolished, both houses and shops, particularly Jackson’s Terrace.
Some men in her neighbourhood were involved in the War of Independence and the Civil War. She tells the story of the Black and Tan’s searching for them at a funeral.
Young people went courting on the disused Bandon railway line.
She worked making altar breads, with the Reparation Nuns.
She tells a funny story about how a corpse was washed and the water was thrown after the hearse afterwards.
She mentions several cinemas in Cork and recalls that The Savoy cinema had a great organist.

Jack Byrne: Blackpool, World War Two, Sports
Life History;
Jack talks briefly about life history and remembers local sporting heroes such as Christy Ring.
Jack (born circa 1926) grew up in O’Connell Street. His parents were both Northsiders. His father worked for the Post Office. His mother was born in 1888 and grew up on Scoura Hill. (Jack believes the term is a corruption of an Irish word, translating as Hungry Hill.) His father’s mother had a shop at Wherland’s Lane until 1922.
He mentions the Bride River and a walk along it called Debtor’s Walk where people who owed money could travel without being seen. He talks briefly about the ghost known as the Foxy Lady, which may have been the image of a young woman killed by machinery in the Sunbeam flax mill.
His father served in the British army and he says his neighbourhood had many ex-servicemen; he muses on people’s attitude to the Second World War, and on Irish neutrality.
He liked hurling and soccer and recalls cycling to Thurles in 1944 to see a match, and meeting Christy Ring. He describes Ring’s playing. There was no car or public transport during the war, and he recalls that 10,000 Cork people cycled to Fermoy for a match in 1943.
After school, he was unemployed for a year before finding work at the Sunbeam plant. Jack retired in 1988.

Evelyn Wainwright
Polio
Evelyn was born in the 1940s. Her parents were living in England prior to her birth. Father worked for Ford in Dagenham. Evelyn only met her father a handful of times. After her parent’s relationship ended Evelyn’s mother and her older brother Barry moved to the corporation estate of O’Growney Crescent in Ballyphehane. At the age of 3 Evelyn contracted polio. Two years were spent in Cappagh Hospital in Finglas Co. Dublin.
Evelyn brings us through her live, from schooling Turners Cross which she made lifelong friendships but also had her first instance of isolation. Not following on to secondary education Evelyn got a job in the Textile industry, first at Mel Industries then in the Sunbeam.
Evelyn talks about her life getting married and having a family in her early 20s, the realities of living with polio and raising children. She talks about her involvement in groups such as Disabled Driver Ireland and Polio Survivors Ireland.
Evelyn also describes her mother character in a time when single mother s might have been looked down upon. She mentions an aunt the also had polio.
Evelyn also touches on how disability access while it has improved from the days of her youth has not really been thought through with any real concern for those with disabilities.

Eileen Jones: Blackpool, Shawlies, Sunbeam,
Life History:
Eileen Jones (b. 1931) was born in Millfield Cottages. When she was 4 years old her family moved to Welsh’s Lane in Blackpool; members of her extended family lived nearby. Her mother was born in 1896. Her father was a builder’s labourer.
There was no secondary school in Blackpool, but some students could stay on in primary school. She left at 14. She praised a teacher, Miss Hourigan, who gave the class a love of the ritual of the mass, and of basic maths and arithmetic, which stood to them in later life.
Eileen worked in the Sunbeam factory, and in Cork Spinning Company. She later got a job in Roches Stores, and she tells the story of how she came to get chosen for the job.
She talks in detail about the neighbourhood of Welsh’s Lane; how visiting strangers were quizzed. Children played out all day, their meals served according to the time kept by a local factory siren.
She recalls some of the words of the rhymes they sang while skipping. She lists the names of the lanes she knew in her youth.
Mentions that Kilcully graveyard had a lot of Traveller graves [Interviewee calls the Travellers ‘gypsies’]
She remembers the names of local shops; and The Co-Op where you earned stamps to exchange for goods.
She talks about a savings bank in St Mary’s Hall; it was a shilling to join.
Eileen remembers the clothes women wore before the war: shawls, kitchen aprons, petticoats. Her grandmother wore a black shawl; Traveller women wore fawn and brown plaid shawls. She tells a story about a woman who collected shawls from the deceased when they were laid out.
When she was born she was not expected to live and was taken close care of. She tells the story of her being christened with a name chosen by the priest.
She worked in the Sunbeam factory. Her supervisor lead prayers during the day. She didn’t like the portrayal of the workers in “The Sunbeam Girls”. The women workers sang as they worked.
Eileen also recalls bonfire night, drinking ‘razza’ and listening to people singing. Workers could go for baths in the Sunbeam factory; few people had baths in their houses.

Cork, Ireland, 1930s-2000s
Billy McCarthy: Childhood, Catholicism, GAA.
Life History: Catholicism, Cork Airport, Emigration, Farming, Fishing, Fitzgerald’s Park, GAA, Holy Communion, Hurling, Inisfallen, Legends, The Lough, Nationalism, Poverty, Religion, Quaker Road, Sunbeam, Travelers, Trams, War of Independence.
Billy, a one-time Cork Folklore Project member of staff and long-term collaborator, was born in Cork in 1941 and grew up with his six siblings in Quaker Road. His mother was born in Cork and his father came from Dunmanway. Billy attended St Marie’s of the Isle convent school and then Christ the King School in Turners Cross.
Billy recalls that, even though times were hard, life was good, and people didn’t feel underprivileged because all their neighbours were equally poor. He talks about emigration and the Innisfallen ship that sailed out of Cork City every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, full of emigrants. He would make money as a child carrying bags for country people arriving by bus heading for the boat. He witnessed the heartbreak at the quayside, and he calls this the ‘sad side’ of life in Cork.
Billy recalls having to leave school at fifteen to take over his father’s job as a bread van driver when his father took ill. His career also included working at Sunbeam (Sunbeam Wolsey Textiles), which he describes in detail, and at Cork Airport.
Billy talks about his father, who started off working as a tram driver then became a bread van driver, and who was also involved in the War of Independence. Billy talks about the characters he met while working with his father, collecting eggs and bread from country people and Travellers. He tells a tragic-comic story about his Holy Communion and the May procession.
He talks about various aspects of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), including his presidency of the Douglas club, an account of what hurling is and how it is played, and the link between the GAA and Irish Nationalism.
He tells a humorous story about being taken out of school to cycle from Cork to Watergrasshill to tend sheep on land his father owned.
Billy also remembers fishing and playing hurling up at the Lough. He shares memories of the Lough and its changing environment over the years. He remembers trying to meet girls in Fitzgerald’s Park. He recalls motorcycle racing on Monahan Road and Centre Park Road, and on the Carrigrohane circuit on Sundays.
