Title A name given to the resource Stonemason Oral History Project Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Occupational Lore; Trades; Description An account of the resource This collection consists of 14 interviews with 12 people (11 male stonemasons and one female family member). It was carried out between November 2015 and April 2017 and documents the experiences of stonemasons based in Cork throughout the twentieth century. The interviews were carried out by CFP Researcher Michael Moore, himself a qualified stonemason. The collection explores the occupational and social context of stonemasonry; work practices, the social context, occupational lore, the secret language Bearlager na Saor and family ties. Most of the interviews are focused on the mid to late twentieth century with some stories and histories dating back to the eighteenth century This project’s second interviewee, Jim Fahy of the Cork Mason’s Historical Society, was inspired to include an oral history element to his ongoing research and documentation of stonemasonry, and this material is being accessioned to the CFP. Michael Moore characterized the project as an attempt to capture a snapshot of the lives and voices of stonemasons and ‘to record their insular world for posterity’, pointing out that ‘There is a need to document the living tradition of stonemasonry by recording people who work or have worked in masonry, particularly those born into it as part of familial ties.’ (Moore, 2016: 8). After finishing his leaving certificate he attended University College Cork for a year, but says it was not for him. Luckily Seán Lemass had changed the rules on who could be accepted into trades (before this you had to be the son of a mason to be accepted in the trade). Edward did his apprenticeship with PJ Hererty's. He describes how he got into the trade, what the pay was like, and what the conditions were like. Edward talks about the customs of masons, like sharing tobacco, vouching for other masons. W.G: Well there would be a bit about witches and that you would be a bit scary now. C.C: Scared to go out? W.G: That time ya.. Especially now when it would be getting a bit late in the evening. There was a lot more scare around then than then now. Frightening stories would have been told. C.C: Would you be sitting down telling stories now that night? W.G: Well we would like, the father would have plenty of those haunted house stories, we would be running into the corners. C.C: And all about ghosts and spirits? W.G: Oh ya, ya we believed quite a lot about the ghosts around that time. C.C: Was there any particular ones around here, was there any ghost stories? W.G: Ah! There’s one down there in the Boreen, that’s a well know place. It used to be called “The Style”, it was halfway down to the old barracks and going a way back. A lady used to tell me there was a priest seen there on numerous occasions…. praying late by night as we witnessed ourselves later on. I had a horse on the road at the time and the horse would be shying, scared you know, around to one side of the road, and it happened a couple of years later with a second horse my brother was driving. And my sister saw something very unusual down there one night. C.C: Oh! That girl that was home from England. W.G: Ya! C.C: What did she see? W.G: She was doing the romancing down there and saw an enormous cat, she thought she was seeing things first but her boyfriend, who was terribly brave fella, he was known to be a tough man, he got a desperate fright that night, he forgot about the romancing for quite a bit. C.C: What did he see, a big cat? W.G: It was supposed to be a huge cat, I didn’t believe it myself, but my sister said definitely, it was terribly unusual. There was something scary always about that area. My father was sitting up there one night and was pushed off the style and he put out his shoulder actually. C.C: Did he? W.G: So people don’t believe in haunted places. It was very convenient to where a young girl died at the age of 25 years, it was tragic and she is buried only a short distance from that … and apparently that was their premises that they owned, and there’s a style there… and it’s in that gate they used drive with their coach to get up to the house which is the house near me now. They lived in that house. C.C: The house next door? W.G: Ya. C.C: Is that right? W.G: Oh yeah! W.G: Her name is inscribed on the staircase inside, this girl. C.C: She died when she was 25? W.G: She died tragically, there’s a big story about that, but you would want to be sitting down for a while to go through that. But it’s a fact, because it came out on “The Echo” one night. C.C: Did it? W.G: Oh ya! I have the story on it there. C.C: When was that? A very, long time ago? W.G: Oh God that would be back a long way, oh they were French – Delahide was their names. C.C: What was her name? W.G: The father deserted them and went away to America and was away for 25 years and she grew up a beautiful girl and they had a house in Kinsale…. ‘n the meantime she was going around Cork and she met this foreigner or Yankee coming home and they took up together and the romance started off even though he was twice her age but age don’t come between love you know. C.C: I know. W.G: What happened then was, it was getting more serious, so one night he showed her, she asked him would he like to see a few photographs, there wouldn’t be a whole lot of them that time…. cameras weren’t on the go that much. She went through a few photos anyway and she came to this chap about 19 and he said “who was that?”, “ That was my father”…. and he left a gasp out of him, so he didn’t say any more to her that night…. when he sat her down after a few nights later, he said he would have to break off the whole show that’s going on between us, the romance. “What’s wrong?” she said. He said, “that’s me in the photo”. Her own father, she was going to marry him in six months. C.C: You’re not serious. W.G: Oh I am, and you would imagine with the shock that the father would pan out but actually the girl died in a very short time. C.C: Broken heart? W.G: Well, shock I would say. And she’s buried down here, in just adjacent to the Commons Bar. C.C: Is that right? W.G: Yes. C.C: Her grave is there? W.G: Well, it was there, but the stories tell it was consecrated and all for her and the father became a recluse after that, he wouldn’t go out until midnight and drive and coach and he used have the horses’ feet padded and they thought it was a headless coach, …. which it wasn’t, but that was the same style in the gate that he used to go in there because he would be driving up to this house here to see her. The mother had died in the meantime. They had a house in Kinsale, but after she died, he never came out by day after that. But it was very tragic. C.C: And it was a true story? W.G: So that’s how we call it “The Haunted Style”, a combination of the two of them now live! C.C: Was her ghost, was she ever seen? W.G: Well, no. I saw a few things down there, but no like, not really. C.C: Did you see a few things down there? W.G: I met someone coming out the gate on at night all in black holding a white purse, 12:45, I was just coming down from Goulds and I be like my own father, I’d face anything. I’d be brave regards to that. I tracked her down a bit, but I didn’t want to go too far because she thought I might be following her or something. I thought she might go into Onslow Gardens, but she stood under the tree below, for quarter of an hour and I stayed above and there was no move out of her. So I was coming up another night then from Lyons Cottage, I was like a bit of a rover and I saw her again. C.C: The same woman? W.G: Up on the lane, there could be a possibility that she fancied some fella in Onslow Gardens. And then again, she had long hair and she had kind of a cloak on her. That’s why you wouldn’t see too many of them with that on. C.C: She never made a sound or anything? W.G: No, no. Never spoke or anything, so you could take that with a pinch of salt, or with a glass of brandy if you like. Founded in 1924 by Fr Christopher O'Flynn. The theatre, up to the year 2000 was based out of the upper floor in Linehan's sweet factory John Redmond Street which is why it gained the moniker "The Loft". Since its inception, the group has put on a variety of Shakespeare's works in various theatres in the city including the Cork Opera House and the Everyman Theatre. Pat says he went to a few meetings there. He mentions a man who used to go there, Declan Gould. Pat used to go there out of curiosity and to read their literature. He says he didn’t consider becoming a fully-fledged member. He got to know a congregation member called Larry who says does dance lessons. Pat says they were good employers and mentions Brooke Haughton of whom Mr Haughton was a Quaker. He said they did not discrimate and employed many Catholics. Pat mentions a neighbour who lived across the road from him, Patsy Frayne who was a Catholic and was employed as a caretaker in The Meeting House. Pat says they had an average meeting congregation of about 30 and sometimes it could go up to 50. Eileen, can you remember any of the toy shops in Cork, when you were growing up? E.O'S Well, I can, I tell you what, there was a little shop in Princes Street, "Jays", there was "Woolams" then, we used to call it King Street, it's now McCurtain Street, I suppose it was Kings Street when the British were here. But 'em they used to have beautiful toys in the Grand Parade, you know, and I suppose they had them in Cash's. The Munster Arcade was renowned for toys, big toys too, tricycles and scooters and the like, and Roches Stores, but they didn't go in for toys in as big a way as the Munster Arcade. L.C. Do you remember some of the games you played when you were younger in the street.? E.O'S. Well, we used to have hoops, you know you just rolled them along, and we used to have tops, different types of tops ( spinning tops ) one was a racer, you'd hit it with a stick, you'd buy the stick, it would have a leather type of whip, and you'd hit it and the top would fly along. Hoops, marbles, of course, a very general thing, marbles, called glassyalleys, oh and skipping ropes with handles L.C. What year would that have been about? ( 1920/ 21 ) E.O'S. Oh Lord, I suppose when I was about six or seven, nearly seventy years ago, ha! ha! but 'em there's a shop there where we used to get most of our things, it was at the corner of Oliver Plunkett Street, at the Grand Parade end. They specialised in hoops and tops, and the thing that you whipped the top along with, that was leather on a stick ( a top whip ), hoops, tops, marbles, what else had we? I think -- and teachers too I think that when we were -- even though it wasn’t too long ago, twenty years ago when we were growing up, they had this-- they had this-- there was no dividing their feelings. They either liked you or they didn’t. There was no in-between. And I don’t think that they gave people or children that time, the understanding and benefit of the doubt like they do today. I really don’t think they made the effort and maybe they didn’t like the look of you or-- if you were-- like there were other people less more fortunate than I was. Kind of grubby or untidy, or if they came from a very rundown background very poor. I think they were actually bullied more than the rest. That always stuck, I remember one girl in my class and they had nothing, absolutely nothing. Now at the time with me, nothing to you anyway but as you grew up you often start to think, I mean, think that, that she, how she ever went there I’ll never know. Putting the dunce’s hat on her head, in the middle of the classroom and making her kneel down. I can remember the nun doing that to her. T.N: That’s right, me father was the Lord Mayor of Blackpool there we’ll say about three years ago or something like that. C.F: Right, how did he get that achievement? T.N: Oh, he was, I think it was through to the club, they used to go to Delaney’s club and he was up there and he was picked from the am... C.F: Right. And do Blackpool have a new Lord Mayor every year like you know the City would have one, do Blackpool have an honorary member to become Lord Mayor of Blackpool as well? T.N: I’m sure they do now because after my Dad now there was somebody else Lord Mayor and I think... C.F: Do you know who? T.N: At the, no, ‘twas my Mam now, my Mam and Dad would know who he is, I can’t remember the name. C.F: Jack Lynch lives in Blackpool; do you know anything about Jack Lynch? T.N: Jack Lynch. She went to Blackpool School, which was since demolished; there they used to be given milk and buns. Tina recalls some of a skipping rhyme she used to sing as a child. Her first job was in the Sunbeam factory, when she was about 14. She remembers holidaying in Youghal, travelling there by train. As a child she swapped scrapbooks with other girls. Founded in 1924 by Fr Christopher O'Flynn. The theatre, up to the year 2000 was based out of the upper floor in Linehan's sweet factory John Redmond Street which is why it gained the moniker "The Loft". Since its inception, the group has put on a variety of Shakespeare's works in various theatres in the city including the Cork Opera House and the Everyman Theatre. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com Pat talks about the composer Aloys Fleischmann and goes into his general story including his connections with the Cork Ballet Company which is how Pats wife got to know him. Pat met him a few times usually when he would call to the house to drop music off. He says he was a very unassuming man. He had an old broken down car with the door nearly falling off and he would have no mass on things like that. He also used to drive an old motor bike. He brought a friend of Pats wife up to Clonmel on the bike and took a corner quickly and they ended up in the ditch but they walked away from it. He says he was like Fr O Flynn in some respects in that he’d inspire people. He collaborated with Joan Denise Moriarty with The Cork Ballet Company. The Cork Ballet Company became The Irish Ballet Company so they set up a professional company out of Cork which the Cork Symphony Orchestra would play in collaboration with. Pat says they travelled to Europe and America but the Dublin based Arts Council said it could survive if it was based in Dublin, their funding was taken from them. Up to end of Fleischmann’s and Joan Denise Moriarty’s lives they were both heavily involved in ballet and music. The ballet and Cork Symphony Orchestra are still around but not in the same capacity as they used to be says Pat. M.M: I suppose dancing it would have been the Francis Hall (Sheare’s Street) in the Arcadia (lower Glanmire Road). CC. Did ye go to Pubs? M.M: When we got to the Pub scene, it would have been, O’ Riordan’s Pub in Merchant’s Quay. C.C: O’ Riordan’s pub. M.M: Yeah and she had a cafe overhead and we liked going there because we had to go to Confession nearly every Saturday. C.C: Yeah. M.M: And if you didn’t go to Confession on Saturday, and came home and still said you did that was another lie, that’s another lie you have to tell next week. C.C: That’s an extra one to add on to the rest. M.M: One on to that and Mrs. Riordan was very good cos we go down of a Saturday and we be playing darts or cards and when it’s time for Confession she’d hunt us out the door and she would give us a tea leaves on the way to chew on the way up to the Chapel, to take away the smell of the stout. C.C: Did she? M.M: Yeah. C.C: Get away? M.M: Yeah, malt tea leaves and you just suck on them on the way up to the Church.. C.C Jes, and then go into Confession. M.M: Go into Confession. C.C: And would yea go back down there again after yea come then? M.M: And back down to the pub then. C.C: And would there be a group of ye together? M.M: Oh yea, four or five, going to Confession. C.C: And what time was the closing time? M.M: Oh, we never be there at closing time, at that stage, you were always back. C.C: Probably falling on the ground, were ye? (Laughs) Before that? Title A name given to the resource Michael Murphy: Worklife; Murphy's Brewery; Childhood Subject The topic of the resource Life History: Description An account of the resource Michael was born in 1941. He was born in Francis Street. He had 6 brothers and 5 sisters. His earliest memory is of his grandfather’s funeral, with a hearse pulled by two horses, in 1945. His mother’s pregnancies and the arrival of newborn children was not discussed. His children’s clothes were passed on to a neighbour’s child. He recalls the practice of buying a habit for a dead person. His father (b. 1910) started work at the age of 10 at Murphy's bacon factory on Evergreen St. Michael’s best friend was a Jewish boy, Isaac Charger. He went to the Savoy cinema, dancing in Francis Hall and the Arcadia, drinking in O’Riordan’s, Merchant’s Quay. He went to confession after the pub; the owner gave him tea leaves to chew to take away the smell of drink. He started working in Murphy’s brewery in 1959 and rose through the company. Well it did too because, at that time we still had the original founders like Gus Healy and Eileen Curran and, and others: Tom Vesey, Teddy Healy, Norry O’Brian, Norry,…..Norry Healy, sorry as and. Quite a number of others that, that,…..Jonny Gallaher, she was another woman that, who came into that as well and, and they, they were there with us as well. So they brought us along another step of the way, and Gus Healy was absolutely wonderful that he was able to bridge that gap because he knew Fr. O’Flynn from the time that the loft was founded in 1924, right up until he died and then came in and then took over the role of, of chairman. And was chairman up till the time he died in 1986. So we were lucky, and of course, Eileen Curran was Fr. O’Flynn's disciple and she had his interpretation. She knew the plays backwards. She could quote from any of the plays without ever looking at a book, you know. And we were lucky. And then, like, we were maturing ourselves. Pierce, of course, my brother, was that much ahead of me and he, he was well into it as well. And you had Pat Lehane and other stalwarts of that particular time. Now I would have to say then a lot of the others had drifted away, like the Michael Twomey’s and Marie Twomey’s weren’t as and…. those that were around at the time when I mentioned like the: Kevin Sheehan’s, the Michael Mcauliffe and all of these. They, Monn Murphy’s, they had moved on a bit. Now one or two of them, like Monn, came back and did a few parts with us at later stages, you know. I know Monn did a reprise of Hamlet in, I think the mid, the mid 60's, 1964. She came back and reprised her role as ‘Ophelia’, you know. And Tom Vesey, of course, a very old great old stalwart of the original cast. He, he was there up until he died I think 1966. So they, we were lucky, you know. But then we had matured enough to more or less bring it on ourselves and Pierce immersed himself, my brother that is, immersed himself in the work of Fr. O’Flynn and Eileen Curran. When Eileen Curran passed on in 1977. And we also had a, a, a, an outsider who's contributed hugely to the loft of the period and he was a man by the name of John Morley. And he came into the loft in the early 70's and he, he, he was quite an outstanding character. He was English, old English, retired actor living in Cork for a period and he, he was, he was a great man of theatre, you know. And he taught us a lot of things apart from…. the plays and producing and all that, you know. He taught us a lot about creating properties and you know, and settings and all that as well. And he was an extremely talented man and wonderful guy and he understood Fr. O’Flynn and where Fr. O’Flynn was coming, from the word go. He had in fact in Dublin been a friend of Fr. O’Flynn’s nephew, John O’Flynn. And when he came to Cork he, he, he, he was involved briefly I think with The Everyman Theatre. But then he came along to us. And he, he was with us for many happy years really up until….. 1977. He was producing at the time that Eileen died rather suddenly on us in the middle of the last few rehearsals for, for The Winter’s Tale in 1977. And she was; Susan Cummins was a very good girl at the time who, who filled in, in between, between the Saturday and the following Wednesday she, she filled in for him …and she took over the role that was vacated by Eileen Curran, which was quite a substantial role actually in that play. And she, she was to give a very credible performance but John Morley, he directed that. And I learnt a great deal from him because I played ‘Leontes’, the king, in that I had a major role for the first half of, of the play and he was great. But he eventually; he was a member of the high religion and he was asked to go over to Bermuda with his wife, Valery, who was a lovely lady as well. That was about the end of the period where we had come out of The Opera House. We went back into the opera house in the 70s and then did quite a number of plays in The Opera House. But eventually, the burden of, of, of mounting pro plays in the opera house became a bit heavy for us all because we were all young and married and working and that sort of thing. So we tended to go back into The Theatre of the South, a little theatre in Castle Street and then after that then, when they built the The Cork Arts Club then in Knapp’s square we gravitated to there. We kinda, generally speaking, do most of our plays there now at the, at the moment anyway, but. So, that was, we were helped an awful lot to be able to do that, you know. Now, and I'm glad to say that there’s a new generation coming on after us headed up by Ciaran O’Leary and others, and Ray Brothers and Mike O’Neill and hopefully they'll carry the organisation on further into, into the next number of years. Her father was from the Fail hill area and her mother came from Whitechurch. Sheila was second youngest in a family of 7 girls and 4 boys. Her father worked in a government building as the lift operator. Sheila describes herself as her father's pet. Her father died when she was 9 years old, after which Sheila feared being put in the Good Shepherd. She describes her childhood clothing, how most of it came from her aunt in America and that they used to go to school in their bare feet. At school, all the children were treated the same no matter what there economic reality, all children were provided with Cocco and a bun in the morning. Sheila explains how she or her siblings never had toys growing up and mentions that she received her first toy at the age of 58 from her husband. She also mentions how a new frock would have been purchased for her communion but would have been taken to the pawnshop on the following Monday and never be seen again. Sheila states that this was quite a common practice at the time. Also, any money that was given to her for her communion by relatives and neighbours would have been taken off her by her mother. She notes how on an odd occasion she would get a slab of Cleeves toffee and that would last her three days. Teeth were cleaned by brushing with soot and salt which she says made her teeth clean and strong. Sheil then describes the games she played as a child and explains how they had a different game depending on what season it was. Sheila married at 19 to a carpenter. She describes married life and her job as a domestic servant for wealthy families in the city. She then goes on to describe pregnancy and childbirth in detail. Sheila finishes the interview by answering various questions comparing modern life to that of her youth. My mother had been one of the original children who Fr O’Flynn taught poetry, and… She was there at the very beginning as actually, as a very small child. She used to attend classes in the presbytery when she was aged only about 6 I think, and Fr. O’Flynn taught her poetry. Not Shakespeare, but Robert Louis Stevenson's Child's Garden of Verses. He had her saying poetry. And, and these classes in the presbytery, they were the very beginnings of The Loft. Fr. O’Flynn then found an old loft near Shandon and the classes moved into this premises, which ….my mother loved .And, she was in the week, the great week where they did eight different Shakespearean plays. She took part in that. And she also took part in a very famous production of The Midsummer’s Night Dream, which was held on the roof of The North Infirmary. And ….it was held for a private audience: the medical staff, and the nuns, and some clerics went and I think the bishop of Cork went. And my father…. attended it as a young boy, because his father was on the staff of The North Infirmary. So he was in the audience and he saw my mother play the part of ‘Puck’ in The Midsummer’s Night Dream and that was how my parent’s actually met. Was through Shakespeare, on the roof of The North Infirmary. So that’s quite a way to meet, it really is. DMC. And, and what year, what period was this? CD. My mother did ‘Puck’ when she was very young, so, she was born 1916 so…. I think she did Puck when she was about 12. Yes, she was very young, Puck. But, she always remembered that day, she said t'was one of the great days of her life, actually, playing ‘Puck’ on the roof of The North Infirmary. And, therefore when we were children she brought us up to meet Fr. O’Flynn because she adored Fr. O’Flynn and very much wanted us to, to be in the tradition of the loft, you know? I don’t know if he ever went out to see a film. I presume he did but that didn’t sort of light his fire at all really he had no particular, any interest in film, no particular interest in the theatre as such. Always remember that Fr O Flynn was exercising his ministry as a priest in the Loft and he was very subtly getting across the story of the gospels through the teaching of Christ through the plays of Shakespeare you know? That was his main thrust really so, yeah he certainly was in the 1930s well before I arrived they brought out a pamphlet for one of their shows about the evils of Jazz. They were very, very much opposed to jazz. He was anyway. I think he had convinced a lot of the guys up there at the time, and girls, that jazz, they kind of in a way that they were a little bit superior to that you know? That was, they regarded jazz as a little bit low class and I used to get that from Gus Healy you know who was very deeply involved from the inception of the Loft in 1924 up until he died in 1986 as Chairman of the Loft itself. He’d been Chairman actually since the time Fr O Flynn died in 1962 until he died himself in 86 so in all those years like he guided the Loft on a very steady course of development you know? And like the Loft in those days became a very popular place for aspiring actors, certainly during Fr O Flynn’s time of course and after the War, you know? A lot of young guys and girls that were interested in getting involved in theatre and it was kind of a thing to do at the time if you really wanted to put the stamp on your acting career it was nice to be able to say that you had spent some time in the Loft you know? And even for those who subsequently went on to become professional actors they would often refer to that like, that was where they learned their craft. Of Course, the whole thrust of Fr O Flynn and the Loft was to as he used to say himself constantly to educate the heart and the emotions that went with it. So he had no great interest in, you know, in new attitudes or anything like that that didn’t take that of acting, that didn’t take that into account. No interest in the technicalities of acting you know? That didn’t interest him. But what interested him was getting inside the emotional elements of the characters you played. And he was right because unless you do that your characters are going to come across rather stilted and wooden you know? But by really adopting the characters, kind of a method system really in a way with, I’m sure himself and Stanislavski would have had a great deal in common in that sense you know? But he wasn’t you know, open to any immorality or anything like that although open-minded in his own way. That so often say to them, the older guys when they were coming back on busses from performing and things like that you know, he used to say to them down the back of the bus, he’d be up in the front of the bus and he’d say “no keyhole romancing down there” you know? So like if you were, he didn’t mind you, you know having a bit of a romantic session with your girlfriend but provided you weren’t hiding it so in that sense he was a bit ahead of his time. Founded in 1924 by Fr Christopher O'Flynn. The theatre, up to the year 2000 was based out of the upper floor in Linehan's sweet factory John Redmond Street which is why it gained the moniker "The Loft". Since its inception, the group has put on a variety of Shakespeare's works in various theatres in the city including the Cork Opera House and the Everyman Theatre. All interviews in this collection were collected CFP researcher and ex Cork Shakespearean Company member David McCarthy. Pat says also that he was serving as an altar boy at an ordination of a priest and he remembers on the way out seeing Bishop Lucey sitting down and he thought he didn’t look that severe a man. He also says that he had a voluptuous breakfast in front of him and Pat remembers thinking how he’d like to have some of that breakfast. Pat says there was a story told that during Lent Bishop Lucey said you couldn’t eat cakes during lent but you could eat a biscuit. Pat says a Cork firm brought out a cake that looked like a biscuit to get around this and they were nicknamed “Connie Dodgers”. Pat says he didn’t want to be moving out to another church to do the ordination mass and that he wanted to do it in the Cathedral. Pats father said how Bishop Lucey stood up to the Protestants on the Board Of Management Of The Savings Bank. Pat speaks of how a professor of moral theology in UCC at the time of Humanae Vitae made a statement that if anyone had any problems they could come to him and he would give them advice. Pat says when Bishop Lucey heard this he saw red and summoned him to the Bishops Palace. Pat says soon after Fr Paul went out to Africa. He says a time later Bishop Lucey went out to meet him. He says that Fr Good is still alive and living out in Douglas. He is supposed have said that the bishop that he knew here and the bishop out in Africa were two different people. Pat says according to Ger Cassidy (an older former neighbour) there was a sin of company keeping which would involve courting couples. He says it was a special time. He says unlike the youth of today there was no throwing of eggs. He says his father would put an old ten pence piece into the apple, tie it to a string and then tie it to a lamp and swing it. They would take turns at attempting to take a bite from the apple to get the ten pence, he adds they were lucky they didn’t choke on it. He also says there was a game with an apple in a dish of water and he describes going from door to door dressed up. He says he always saw it as a triumph when they were given a few pence as that was what they really wanted. He says they would be out for two or three hours on Halloween night and they must have done the whole of Togher. He forgets the names of half the games but says snap apple was one. He says they used to have a great time with their parents and neighbours kids in the living room.Alan says there was a neighbour who along with two friends would go out as Wren Boys on Stephens Day. He says they would dress up as women and put on shawls and wear makeup to look like women. One of them had a bodhran and they would go from door to door banging the bodhran. And of course then like the old home, like, they believe in this month like, the Snap-Apple there, the Samhain, that the Almighty gives permission to the people to come to their house, that are gone. To visit their house that night. And again, like, some of the older women would light a plum candle, that night, and clean it, and have the house nice and clean. And there was no fear. I mean there wouldn’t be fear of anything like it was just done. S.H: Yeah. On the All Saints’ Eve, 31st of October? E. dB: Yeah. The candle would be lit, by them. S. H: What was the common name in Cork for that eve, was it All Saints’ Eve, or Hallowe’en or Snap-Apple Night? E. dB: Snap-Apple Night, sure when we were children it would be Snap-Apple Night, you know? S.H: There seems to have been some confusion. You know how All Souls’ Day is the 2nd of November, the feast following All Saints’. But in earlier times people sometimes referred to Hallowe’en as All Souls’ Night, is that right? E. dB: Well that only came with Christianity. The Church like were kind of crabbid like that, and you see, pre-Christian it was a big, big, big ceremony, with you know different things all the, you must remember, the apples are in, the harvest is in, the men are coming in, they won’t have to watch the shores for the Vikings with the storms and things, and you see like it was a big huge thing. But like the Church, they didn’t take it from us, the little magic. But they had to put “All Saints’ ” and they had to put “All Souls’ ” in it to diminish it a bit because you know, what we believed is, you know is, to hold us, to bring us into a different belief. So that would have been that. S. H: Yes. Did you ever hear it referred to as “All Souls’ Eve,” as well? E. dB: I did. Oh yes, “All Souls’, ” oh yeah? S. H: And people would know that you were meaning the 31st. of October, rather than the 1st of November? E. dB: Oh, they would, sure that’s the night, long ago then, we’d have to try and be home before 12 o’clock, we’d be frightened, you know now. You wouldn’t be out that night late. You see, on the streets. S. H: And did you hear of people making visits to graveyards around that time, pray for deceased relatives? E. dB: Oh, I did of course. There is an indulgence now, they say like, you know. I’ve been out now in Douglas there in the graveyard last week, I was doing a bit of work, and I be going around to Saint Finbarr's now, doing a little bit of work this week, please God, and I’ll call into Saint Finbarr's, we’re supposed, you know, to remember him and pray for him and they say like, you know, that time you could get out very easy, out of you know, if you were down, paying for your little wrongs, you could, you know, get a small bit... S. H: Yeah, a discount. E. dB: Yeah, it was a grand bit, yeah, that’s the idea, sure that’s what’s lovely. Indulgence. No fear or nothing, but, a thinking of those that are gone. Title A name given to the resource Eibhlís de Barra: Northside, Gender, Childhood Games Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Eibhlís was born on the Southside of Cork. Her husband was from Blarney Street, on the Northside. She recalls childhood games such as The Chaineys, and The Gobs, and Scaa, the latter two played with small stones. She quotes some of the skipping rhymes and remembers the rope games. Eibhlís comments on the value of the Irish language, and on English as spoken in Cork. She talks about home births, and about the process of dying at home, comparing it to sanitised hospital scenarios. Traditions of All Souls and All Saints Day. After marriage, it was traditional for the woman to live near her mother and grandmother; for the man to move to her area. She recalls the important role of women in families; men were left to their hobbies and remained peripheral. She talks about the importance of storytelling and tells a story about a clever man making a wish with a fairy. She muses on Irish history and concludes that the rich always betray the poor. She tells a story about two Scottish men who died fighting for Ireland at different times, one being ‘Colkitto’ [also known as Alasdair Mac Colla (d.1647)]. Eibhlís remembers Mardyke in her youth, says it was better then. There was a men’s part to the area, where men gathered to play cards. She talks about the rivalry between Northside and Southside and the sometimes violent rivalry between GAA clubs Barrs and The Glen (St Finbarr’s and Glen Rovers). There was a shop in Barrack Street where women could leave their children while they went to work. She describes people from the Northside as a distinct people, who were rogues but could be very nice. She speaks about the War Of Independence and Black And Tans drunken rampages during the curfews. She speaks of two brothers who were on opposite sides during the Irish Civil War where one shot the other. You obviously have a great love of Blackpool and adjacent areas. D L: I have, yes. S H: You would regard the Bride Valley, this whole valley here as a special place? D L: Oh, a very special place. I really think that over a hundred years, hundred and fifty years ago, I really think it was isolated from the City of Cork. That it was a place unto its own. A place that people would refer to; “Blackpool ". And not even mention Cork. S H: So where do you think the “dark pool” part actually came from? D L: Well, Blackpool was a very boggy area and there was three different rivers coming into Blackpool. And it was really a very boggy area and it took them a long time to get the rivers to run into one course. I'm just looking for a little bit here now. Anyway, they got 'em to run into one river and that carries on into the Northern part of the city and down into the River Lee. But um....what did you say then? S H: Oh, I just said.... well, has the physical appearance of the area changed much over last sixty years or so? D L: It has. Blackpool was made up of a lot of lanes. Small lanes. And the people that lived down there, most of them were related to one another. S H: And then those big anonymous blocks of flats were put up, it changed, I suppose. D L: They did. This is... I describe Blackpool as “A comfortable and long-established district, nestling between the hills of Farranree and the heights of Farrancleary ". And I said: " From such a hard and humble beginning, there are now many fine buildings and splendid streets, from Hatton's Alley, where was situated the original 'Blackpool' ". There was some leather-works or something there and the water took on a dark colour, and of course, that was “Blackpool", “Linn Dubh” in Irish. "The streets and lanes have spread out, northwards there is Great William O'Brien Street, Brocklesby Street, where our beloved school is situated, Commons Road, Thomas Davis Street, named after the great Irishman who said ' Educate, so that you may be free ', Dublin Street and Dublin Hill, Mallow Road and Millfield Village. Then towards the city, there is Watercourse Road, O'Connell Street, called after the great Statesman who won emancipation for the Catholic Irish; then, to manifest the genuine core of its honest Irishness, let the long list of the lanes of Blackpool be written. Spring Lane, Walshe's Lane, Green Lane, Foster's Lane, Slattery's Lane, Wherland's Lane, Broad Lane, Narrow Lane, Sunday School Lane, Quarry Lane, Peacock Lane, Keller's Lane ". Long: Working Life; Balckpool; Austrailia Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Denis grew up in Blackpool. His father was a train driver. He worked for the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) but wanted to earn better money and went to Australia in the 1950s. He tells a funny story about visiting a rocket range and meeting someone who recognised him from Cork. He describes Blackpool as having been made up of numerous lanes and observes that its name derived from it being a boggy place full of streams. He comments that the River Lee is said to claim at least one life by drowning a year. There were two holy wells at Sunday’s Well; another called Lady’s Well at Leitrim Street. He talks briefly about Poulraddy Harbour, Micah’s Harbour, and Corkeran’s Quay. The latter two places had grand names but were insignificant. He sings a verse of a song about the latter called “The Cruise of the Mary Jane” and a song that a teacher made Denis remembers that there was an incident with a harbour ferry in the 1940s which lost its steering and caused great panic. He recalls the sports played in Cork, including bird-catching. Denis wrote a book called The Spirit of the Glen, about Glen Rovers GAA club. There was a flood in Blackpool in 1935, and he recounts a funny story about a boy floating by on a sofa. He remembers that a local man developed a way to generate his own electricity using water power. He was a teacher; under the system then, school monitors could become teachers without passing a teaching exam. Title A name given to the resource Margaret Farmer, Catherine McCarthy, Helen Donovan: The Emergency; The Black and Tans; Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Margaret remembers that her father used to shout “Up the Mollies” when he had drink taken. [Note: These particular Mollies were agitators controlled by Joseph Devlin MP in opposition to William O’Brien]. She recalls the days of the Black and Tans; on her Communion day a bomb went off in Cork, this was the Blackpool Bombing where several RIC officers were killed, and the tram she was in was stopped and passengers were taken off. She also talks about a raid by the Black And Tans on a neighbours house. They talk briefly about historical Irish figures, including President Seán T O’Kelly, who they say was nicknamed “The Leprechaun”. Margaret recounts that Noonan’s Road is named after two of her cousins killed by the Black and Tans. She talks about rationing during the war and the difficulties of using flour. Tea could be made from fried, grated carrot. Coal was carried along in a boxcar, which had two wheels and was pulled by too long handles. She talks briefly about “the glimmer man”, an official who checked houses for using rationed gas. She sings a verse of “The Night the Goat Broke Loose on Grand Parade”. She remembers being issued with gas masks during the Second World War; and the interviewees recall air raid sirens going off in Cork, and the locations of several air raid shelters. She sings a verse of a song about rationing [adapted from the song “Bless Em All”]. She finishes by singing a verse of a song beginning with “My lovely rose has lost its crimson gold…” Margaret made a reference to the television, her son Donal Farmer, played the part of the priest in the series "Glenroe". Well, of course as most people who knew him, knew him as a Fianna Fail TD, senator and councillor, obviously. But also, then as lord mayor in 64, 65, and again in 1975, which was the occasion for The Loft members presenting this particular photograph to him. It's a photograph of the city hall as it was in 1896, I think. But that's, that's the background to him. He was…. married to my sister, Rita, and they lived in, in Montenotte area for many years before moving to Blackrock, shortly before he died. A character, there's no question about it. He was small of stature…… had some little bit of a, a disability, I suppose it would be referred to as today. But it was no disability to Gus. He speaks about fasting from midnight if you were going to communion the following day which he says was a very wrong thing to ask people to do. He says nearly every time you were at mass someone would faint especially if there was a large congregation. People would have to be led out of mass because they would get a weakness. He says the big fasting day would be Ash Wednesday. He tells by example a story of when he was teaching in Loughrea in Co Galway and he was staying in his digs in a hotel. He says a priest came down to speak to Humphrey and the other lay teachers staying there. He said to them that they didn’t have to fast for Lent but he couldn’t say that from the pulpit. Humphrey says the girls working in the hotel and kitchen would be looking for dispensation but they would not be given it. He speaks of the unfairness of this and the fact that teachers were regarded as scholars and therefore part of the Church but girls working in menial jobs were expected to fast.
