I had an engine off the road in Tralee. Vandals… S.H: Yeah, when was this? J.C: It was about 1989. Vandals, they broke the light in a dolly, ‘twas called a dolly you know. And there were two white lights and a red light and they broke the red light so at a distance I could see no red light. So, unfortunately, I took the wrong colour then, you see ‘twas two white lights but they were in the wrong position and I went off the road. S.H: Do you think these people do this knowingly, knowing they could cause a terrible smash? J.C: Oh they did of course, ‘twas young fellas like you know. S.H: It could actually cause two trains to collide or something. J.C: Ah no, no, ‘twas only in a shunting-yard, you know. I was unlucky anyway. S.H: How would they get into the shunting-yard? J.C: Oh sure I mean coming from school ‘twas a shortcut going home. S.H: Oh I see it’s not even fenced off. J.C: No, no, ‘twas a shortcut going home you know and they’d be passing these places and unfortunately they broke the light and I walked into trouble over it. S.H: What was that like actually, was it that you got a horrible jolt? J.C: I got a big jolt and it took a while to put her back on the road then you know. S.H: You didn’t have to have time-off work or…? J.C: No, no, I didn’t. S.H: Do they have an enquiry into an incident like that? J.C: Oh there was no enquiry but… S.H: They just come around and have a look, do they? J.C: That’s it, yeah. S.H: Do you have any special railway police? J.C: Oh they’d have police now around Heuston and Inchicore and these places but in the yard over. S.H: Would they be very specialised? J.C: No, no, they’d be a Group 4 crowd you know. They’re around over in the yard you know for fear stuff would be stolen and that kind of thing, the same in all yards where there are Guinness now or groceries or stuff? So did you have a favourite journey when you were driving, a favourite train journey? J.C: Favourite journeys now were, the favourite trains that I worked anyway were the 8 o’clock routes to Dublin, that was a great train. I used do a lot of chaps turns on the 8 o’clock routes because there was money in it, there was nearly double the amount of what you’d earn on other jobs. You see there was all the mileage and the overtime. Well as I say I was a kind of family man and I didn’t spend much away from home. I always tried to make as much as I could for the family like you know. But of course a trip to Dublin on the 5.30, I remember one evening; I’ll tell you about a trip to Dublin. I left Cork one evening at 5.30 and you’d be supposed to pass Charleville at six minutes past six, and I passed Charleville at six minutes past six and at eleven minutes past six I was after passing Charleville down and I was going fairly well. All of a sudden the brakes went on the train. I got on to control and I told them that I was in trouble. I didn’t know what was wrong I said but the brakes were after going on and I said I’d get back to you. I jumped off the engine anyway to go back to the guard to tell him I was in trouble and I hadn't to go far when I saw what trouble I had. There was a hose between the engine and the first carriage, ‘twas gone, it must have blown into a field. The air from the engine was blowing mad you see, I was losing…. S.H: What would the hose do control the air pressure? J.C: Yeah. You see ‘twas the connection for the carriages so when I lost that, I lost all the brake, the brake went on. So I went back to your man anyway, Control and I said ‘I’m in right trouble’ I said, ‘the air hose is gone’ I said. ‘It was blown off’ I said, ‘Jesus’ he said, ‘we’re in right trouble’. ‘Why’, I said. He said ‘there’s no one in Cork to go to your assistance and there’s no one in Limerick. ‘The only thing’ he said ‘I can do’, and ‘twas just quarter past six at this time, he said ‘I’ll send a man down with a hose to you from Dublin on the 6.25’. ‘Is it codding me you are’, I said. ‘6.25, what time will that be down here to me?’. ‘Look’ I said, ‘leave it to me, I’ll see what I can do and I’ll get back to you’ you see. S.H: Right. J.C: And I walked back the train to go back to the guard to tell him that I was in right trouble. On my way back I found a big nut and bolt, right? S.H: Em. J.C: And I was thinking where am I going to get a hose and I thought there should be a hose in the back on the rear carriage. But you see I also thought that they are put on with a machine, so anyway I went back and told the guard, he was gone back a distance now but I gave him a shout and I started beating, flaking the big nut anyway. I flaked and I flaked. Jesus the next thing it started to come, I could feel it slackening and I kept at it and kept at it and I got it. I told the guard to call for a man that was on the train, his name was Mick O’Connell, he was an electrician in Dublin and I saw him on the platform in Cork. Now he was in his good clothes but at least he’d be of some assistance to me. S.H: What do you think the rest of the passengers were thinking by this time? J.C: Well I told your man to tell them that we’d be a while. S.H: Yeah. J.C: So anyway, he called for this Mick O’Connell, the electrician. Mick came out. ‘Jesus’, he said ‘what’s wrong with you’, and I told him. So we went up and I fixed on the tube, the hose and your man gave me a hand to beat it on then like, and I hooked up. Got up on the engine and phoned your man in Control again and I said ‘I’m ready now nearly to go on with this train’. ‘Your not’, he said. I said ‘I am, I’m ready now’. Says he ‘there’s a man on the 6.25 gone down anyway’. So I got the brake, got everything in order, everything was right, got up on the engine and off. Do you know where I met him? S.H: Where? J.C: Above in Templemore. We’d have been about two hours late; I was only half an hour late getting into Dublin. But I was congratulated, I got a letter from Dublin and I got a new uniform and I got fifty pounds and a letter of congratulations, I have it as a matter of fact still. So that was my good trip. S.H: Yeah, and what about Mick O’Connell? J.C: Oh, I’ll tell you the story of Mick O’Connell. In my report then I told them that ‘there was a man travelling on the train, an electrician, Michael O’Connell, and I would be very thankful to you if you would see fit that he should be compensated for the work that he did with me during the break-down’. He was paid four hours and he was brought in on over-time that Sunday. He got a Sunday and he got four hours for working with me. S.H: Very good. J.C: So he was a very happy man. Title A name given to the resource John Collins: Working Life, Railways, Corporal Punishment, Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource John was born in 1928. His family was from Bandon. His father worked on the Cork and Bandon Railway and was transferred to the city in 1929, the family living at Killbarry Cottages, Blackpool. The family moved to a house in Lower Road which was also owned by the railway company. John left school at 16 and joined the railway immediately. His earliest memory is of seeing the cattle trains pass the cottages and his dreaming of being a train driver. He tells a story about corporal punishment at school that rebounded on the master. He recalls a supernatural experience at work. John describes his work as a train shunter, preparing trains for travel to various stations, which he says was well paid. His first job had been cleaning the train engines, which he describes as dirty work. Kent station used to employ up to 500 men, but when steam trains were replaced by diesel trains, employment fell off. He worked as a fireman, loading coal into the steam engine, and was stationed in Courtmacsherry and Mallow. He explains that steam train drivers had to be very skilled at their job. He became a diesel train driver in 1962. He tells a story about unexpectedly having to work on a train all the way to Dublin when he was 17. He tells another story about repairing a train brake hose at night and receiving a commendation afterwards. He remembers an incident when a thief stealing barrels of Guinness from the wagons had a leg cut off by the train. He laments the closing of railway lines, particularly the line to Youghal, which he remembers as very busy. John retired in 1993 but retains his interest in the railways. H: Did you ever hear the phrase ‘‘ lime burners '' applied to the people around Millfield, the Millfield Cottages? L. F: No. S. H: I only mentioned that because somebody told me that, that was a name in the twenties and thirties sometimes applied half-jokingly later to people from around that area because apparently A lot of, quite a few people from that area joined the British forces in the First World War. L. F: Is that right? S H: And, yeah so the story went, and then after independence people didn't want much to do With them, you see because they were “lime burners”, and if somebody's been burning lime there's a horrible stench from them. L. F: I don't know? S. H: No I just thought that you know, perhaps you had heard the phrases, it's interesting to see how far these phrases carry. L. F: The only things I can tell you about the British thing right is, that em, my own mum was nearly killed by a hand grenade in the buildings down here you know Maddens buildings down here, she had just eh, she was in the shop getting messages… S. H: What shop would that be? L. F: That would have been, do you know it could have been Murnane’s, just one of the shops down the street here right, it had to have been right, and she had just got in the door right, and there was this unmerciful bang right, just right where she is and it damaged the door even right ...so. S. H: What happened? L. F: Somebody threw a hand grenade, at one of the Brits I think, maybe one of the rebels, threw it. S. H: Was anyone hurt? L. F: No, no one hurt. S. H: You, can't, she wouldn't remember the year, it would have been 1919 or 1920... L. F: Well she was living in the buildings at that time so, she wasn't married right so she must have been only a teenager, she must have been em, probably around fourteen or fifteen, but I remember her telling me that story. S. H: Did she also tell you something about hearing the shots that killed Thomas MacCurtain? L. F: She did, yeah... S. H: What could she remember about that? L. F: The shots, remember, em, remember hearing the bangs at the time of the, and, I, I'm not absolutely sure of the story but I think at the time, she might have been in somebody else’s house near at hand when it happened, and these bangs went around the place, and nobody, people are used to hearing bangs around then as well of course right ... and, or I said there's some shots gone off right, and it's only then did it come out that they were after being shot you know. So she did hear the shots, yeah. S. H: Did any of them have sort of Nationalist or Republican leanings, your family, or did events more or less pass them by? L. F: They did pass them by but there was always a close, like that thing like about the bomb now going off right, something similar happened to my father because he was a barber first, right, in his young days, when the British people were ruling completely, right, and they used have these sort of eh, I don't know what you'd call them, I suppose eh, this thing that they'd come in with their guns and search every place, do you know what I mean? So they came into the Barbershop and all hand up in the air immediately right and they searched the place and they gave it a real gruelling over, I mean right down into the pots and pans and whatever it was that they had in the thing looking for bombs and he was only a young fella at the time serving his time, he told me this and em, he eh, he was scared out of his livings, because they'd put the gun in your face and that was it right, and when they went away the guys that were, the other two barbers that were there were laughing about the whole thing, and they put their hand up the chimney and pulled down this box full of soot and opened it and here's two guns inside in it, the box right... S. H: You could have all been shot maybe yeah... L. F: Oh, no problem, you know, and he said that was the closest brush that he ever came across. S. H: Were they Black and Tans or Auxiliaries or Regulars or could he remember? L. F: The guys that came in were the Black and Tans, right, and the guys that were the rebels, or what we used to call em in those days, what were they? The IRA I suppose, the Old IRA I suppose, you know... S. H: That's very interesting. Title A name given to the resource Liam Foley: The war of Independence, Corporal Punishment, Music Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Liam is a musician and he discusses his introduction to playing, as well as talking about his family and his schooldays. Liam was born in 1940 in Water Lane. His father, John, was a cabinet maker, who also liked to play music, and could play accordion, mandolin and piano. He didn’t like school, where one teacher used a cane on the pupils; some parents accepted corporal punishment but others attacked some teachers; he tells a story about getting his father to frame a picture to win favour with a teacher who still continued to hit him. Liam tells a story about his mother avoiding a hand grenade thrown at British soldiers during the War of Independence, and her hearing the shots that killed Tomás MacCurtain [in 1920]. N.H: Well when we moved to Listowel in 1967 I think it was mm we were notorious we were the wild Hennessey bunch that blew into town one day and caused a storm until the day we left, what we used to get up to was ah there was a castle in the square in Listowel, and we used to climb that, get up to the top of it, and there was a gooseberry tree on the top of it and used to eat the gooseberries off it you know. We used to ride horses, we used to ah play games with this goat we had. You’d put down your head forward, and the goat would put down its head forward and run at you, you know, and you’d grab it by the horns and push and it would push you know? We’d ah … we used to… cowboys and Indians and all those things you know that children did back in those days you know. S.H: Can you remember any older sort of traditional childhood sort of games like ah .. variants of ‘four square’ or skipping ‘hopscotch’ boys don’t usually skip but ‘hopscotch’ or marbles or? N.H: Yeah, marbles conkers, ah the spinning top a piece of wood shaped sort of like a cone, and you have a piece of stick with its ring off it and you whip it and it spins, spinning top you know. And yoyos’ we had, but one of my earliest memories would have been in mm in Longford or Laisebrooke?? in the square in Laisebrooke playing conkers during the school break you know. S.H: Yeah. N.H: There was a lot of conker trees around the area you know, but ah .. yeah we had a lot of creatures as pets when we were growing up you know, we’d tortoises we’d hedgehogs, we’d foxes, we’d a hawk we’d ah… S.H: How did you come to have a hawk? N.H: We found - It fell out of a nest, and we had a crow as well. S.H: Gee, at the same time? N.H: Different periods. S.H: What sort of hawk was it do you know? N.H: Just an ordinary hawk. S.H: Yeah. N.H: I think we S.H: Was it friendly or? N.H: We used to feed it you know. I think we let it go, let it into the wilds. But we had a crow, Jacko was its name, and mm it would squawk every time it was hungry and it would be in the garage you know, and we’d go out and feed it bread and milk you know, but ah Jacko – I mean, he used to sit on my mother’s shoulder while she was reading a book you know, and he would try and read, try and communicate with us you know. Or when we had the foxes we used to play with the foxes. S.H: How did you come to have foxes? N.H: Ah my father brought them home one day from Tarbert, when Tarbert Power Station was being built you know, and ah he brought it home, thought that we might like it and its name was Rooey it was a vixen. S.H: What was its name? N.H: Rooey. S.H: Rooey, yeah. N.H: It means red one, red one and mm Rooey, we used to play with it and, it used to eat liver that is all it would do. We eventually gave it to Eamonn De Butleir who had a wild sanctuary up in Dublin somewhere – up in Wicklow. He came down from Wicklow one afternoon while we were at school, but he waited until we came home from school and then he took the fox and let it free in his reserve you know. S.H: Obviously, he thought it was nice to tell you kids it was going, he didn’t just want to take it. N.H: We had got a dog then you see, we fell in love with this pup called Sancha, and ah my mother rather than put the fox down we decided to give it to Eamonn De Butleir and let him look after it you know. S.H: Would the dog and fox not have been able to co-exist? N.H: Not really I wouldn’t have thought so because the fox would have been frightened of the dog you know, even though the dog would have been a pup you know. S.H: Yeah. N.H: They wouldn’t have really got on because the dog would have got older much quicker, and its instinct for a dog to hunt foxes anyway you know. He spent his earliest days in an orphanage. His father was from Egypt and his mother was Irish, and their relationship was frowned upon by his mother’s family. He was adopted and lived in Dublin and then in County Kerry. As a child, the family had a pet crow and a pet fox. His father was a construction engineer. In Listowel, he was taught by writer Bryan MacMahon and learnt to speak Irish. He talks about the difficulties of being mixed race in Ireland. ML Okay from the practical point of view it was to improve my English because I did a degree you know after dropping my medical studies. I did a degree in English philosophy to become a secondary teacher and then by the time I finished I..my marriage was not going very well whatever you know and a few circumstances were together you know and I wanted to leave the country definitely then. My choice could be an English speaking country and because one of my best friends in Madrid was married to an Irish man from Cork you know she recommended to me that Cork would be an ideal place and everything. I came here and I’m here. I just came for 10 months and now it’s been almost 4 years since I came. SH And what do you think of the relative living standards between the two? Cork and (?) would they be similar standard of living or expectations? Would one be better than the other one? Or what would be some similarities or differences? ML That’s a hard question because I don’t know. There are many differences regarding you know as simple things as times for meals you know? That is kind of a big issue when you first move here you know? For me, it was really difficult to think about having my dinner at 6 when in Spain we never have it before 9 or 10 or if you go out for a dinner even later you know than some it kind of a big difference but I would say that nowadays we could just go towards … there are not so many differences. Most people try to be happy to get a living from their work and to improve their situation. SH Would you think that Irish people had a similar amount of money, disposable incomes, spending power or a bit more? ML No, I would there are more money in Spain because I don’t know how it works but most people that I know they are in debt. That some Irish people have rents in Madrid for example if you consider a teacher married to a nurse lets say their standard of living would be better in Spain than here. I don’t know exactly why maybe the tax system is stronger here or wherever and definitely things like food are much more expensive here than they are… the bare essentials not much you know? They are expensive. SH What about the poorer people do think they would be better off here or the welfare state would be more inclusive here for them? ML Definitely the welfare state is better here you know? They have more support from the state then they will have in Spain but for example, if you think people here they have kind of benefit employment or whatever but the thing is that if you go onto some kind of work in the black market it’s much better paid in Spain then here you know? Then I think that makes the difference because definitely Spain is the country in Europe with the highest rate of unemployment but people are surviving. They are so happy if you go to a disco it’s full of people. If you go to a restaurant it’s full and then I don’t know how people can manage but definitely they are managing. There would be little or no traffic on East View Terrace. There was just a row of houses, just sixteen houses on one side, on the left, and on the right you had the wall of Quaker graveyard, a blank wall. East View Terrace was the place to play ball to our mind! But some of the residents didn’t like it. We often held a full-scale hurling match there, on a Sunday afternoon. I remember one particular incident, one of the lads who used to play there with us, one age with myself, he and I and another chap, Michael Maverly (God Rest him) who was a few years older than us, and we were playing ball, at lunchtime in East View Terrace, and old guard Halloran coming on his bike, from Barrack Street Station to his home in Ballinlough at lunchtime just swung casually into the terrace and caught us playing ball. So he took our names and one of the lads who was with us there, his grandmother lived as he did, in East View Terrace, his grandmother came down and spoke to the guard and said “this lad wasn’t with them at all, this is Pat, my grandson, catching him by the hand and attempting to take him away. So Guard O’Halloran in his wisdom said, “ One moment Mam, that lad was playing with them when I came along. And incidentally, he said, “aren’t you the woman who came into the station to report these lads. The three of us were fined for playing ball there, three and sixpence (three shillings and sixpence) V.C: An innocent offence, B.McC: Three shillings and sixpence each, for playing ball, V.C: That was a lot of money then, B.McC: And very coincidentally when Guard O’Halloran called after the court hearing to collect the fine, it turned out that he went to school with my mother. V.C: He still took the three and sixpence though! Haha! B.McC: He still took the fine. Title A name given to the resource Billy McCarthy: Quaker Road, Public Baths, Childhood Description An account of the resource Billy was born in 1941. His mother, Mary Ann Cronin, was from Mayfield; her father, William Cronin served with the British army during the First World War, and later became a postman. His father’s family came from Dunmanway, West Cork. His father, Patrick McCarthy, served with the IRA between 1919 and 1921, and later came to Cork to work as a conductor on the trams. He was reared on Irish nationalist history and recites a poem he wrote in his twenties, The Glorious Hour, about Michael Collins and Tom Barry. Billy grew up at Quaker Road. The house had a large garden, and his father raised pigs; on the way to Murphy's Bacon Factory on Evergreen St, they were taken through the house itself. He comments on watching the pigs being slaughtered in the factory. Billy remembers Scannell and Finnegan’s shop, which sold oils, and scrap pictures for scrapbooks. Teenage treats could be got at Kiely’s Chip Shop Maylor St, which he believes was one of the first in the city, and at Harrington’s milk and cake shop. He tells a story about playing street hurling and being caught and fined by the police. Swimming could be done at the indoor Eglantine Street Baths and outdoor Lee baths at the Straight Road. In Summer these were always overcrowded, and he learnt to swim in the River Lee instead. Billy talks briefly about fishing for tadpoles, roach and trout. As a kind of initiation, young boys would lie beside the railway tracks as a train passed. He recalls “the snotty bridge”, an old limestone bridge that had developed stalactites underneath it over time. He sings a song called The Leprechaun. Billy recalls the polio epidemic of 1957 and the fact that Cork people were not welcome in other counties as a result. He briefly recalls the Marian year of 1954. He sings a song called “By Degrees”. He recalls whenever a boat would come in to Cork the women from Spangle Hill would go down the hill with prams to meet their husbands or male relatives who were coming over from England and use the prams to transport their luggage back up the hill. On a big day you would see a lot of them pushing prams up the hill. He says they would also use the prams for bringing shopping home. He speaks about fasting from midnight if you were going to communion the following day which he says was a very wrong thing to ask people to do. He says nearly every time you were at mass someone would faint especially if there was a large congregation. People would have to be led out of mass because they would get a weakness. He says the big fasting day would be Ash Wednesday. He tells by example a story of when he was teaching in Loughrea in Co Galway and he was staying in his digs in a hotel. He says a priest came down to speak to Humphrey and the other lay teachers staying there. He said to them that they didn’t have to fast for Lent but he couldn’t say that from the pulpit. Humphrey says the girls working in the hotel and kitchen would be looking for dispensation but they would not be given it. He speaks of the unfairness of this and the fact that teachers were regarded as scholars and therefore part of the Church but girls working in menial jobs were expected to fast. Well, of course as most people who knew him, knew him as a Fianna Fail TD, senator and councillor, obviously. But also, then as lord mayor in 64, 65, and again in 1975, which was the occasion for The Loft members presenting this particular photograph to him. It's a photograph of the city hall as it was in 1896, I think. But that's, that's the background to him. He was…. married to my sister, Rita, and they lived in, in Montenotte area for many years before moving to Blackrock, shortly before he died. A character, there's no question about it. He was small of stature…… had some little bit of a, a disability, I suppose it would be referred to as today. But it was no disability to Gus. Title A name given to the resource Margaret Farmer, Catherine McCarthy, Helen Donovan: The Emergency; The Black and Tans; Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Margaret remembers that her father used to shout “Up the Mollies” when he had drink taken. [Note: These particular Mollies were agitators controlled by Joseph Devlin MP in opposition to William O’Brien]. She recalls the days of the Black and Tans; on her Communion day a bomb went off in Cork, this was the Blackpool Bombing where several RIC officers were killed, and the tram she was in was stopped and passengers were taken off. She also talks about a raid by the Black And Tans on a neighbours house. They talk briefly about historical Irish figures, including President Seán T O’Kelly, who they say was nicknamed “The Leprechaun”. Margaret recounts that Noonan’s Road is named after two of her cousins killed by the Black and Tans. She talks about rationing during the war and the difficulties of using flour. Tea could be made from fried, grated carrot. Coal was carried along in a boxcar, which had two wheels and was pulled by too long handles. She talks briefly about “the glimmer man”, an official who checked houses for using rationed gas. She sings a verse of “The Night the Goat Broke Loose on Grand Parade”. She remembers being issued with gas masks during the Second World War; and the interviewees recall air raid sirens going off in Cork, and the locations of several air raid shelters. She sings a verse of a song about rationing [adapted from the song “Bless Em All”]. You obviously have a great love of Blackpool and adjacent areas. D L: I have, yes. S H: You would regard the Bride Valley, this whole valley here as a special place? D L: Oh, a very special place. I really think that over a hundred years, hundred and fifty years ago, I really think it was isolated from the City of Cork. That it was a place unto its own. A place that people would refer to; “Blackpool ". And not even mention Cork. S H: So where do you think the “dark pool” part actually came from? D L: Well, Blackpool was a very boggy area and there was three different rivers coming into Blackpool. And it was really a very boggy area and it took them a long time to get the rivers to run into one course. I'm just looking for a little bit here now. Anyway, they got 'em to run into one river and that carries on into the Northern part of the city and down into the River Lee. But um....what did you say then? S H: Oh, I just said.... well, has the physical appearance of the area changed much over last sixty years or so? D L: It has. Blackpool was made up of a lot of lanes. Small lanes. And the people that lived down there, most of them were related to one another. S H: And then those big anonymous blocks of flats were put up, it changed, I suppose. D L: They did. This is... I describe Blackpool as “A comfortable and long-established district, nestling between the hills of Farranree and the heights of Farrancleary ". And I said: " From such a hard and humble beginning, there are now many fine buildings and splendid streets, from Hatton's Alley, where was situated the original 'Blackpool' ". There was some leather-works or something there and the water took on a dark colour, and of course, that was “Blackpool", “Linn Dubh” in Irish. "The streets and lanes have spread out, northwards there is Great William O'Brien Street, Brocklesby Street, where our beloved school is situated, Commons Road, Thomas Davis Street, named after the great Irishman who said ' Educate, so that you may be free ', Dublin Street and Dublin Hill, Mallow Road and Millfield Village. Then towards the city, there is Watercourse Road, O'Connell Street, called after the great Statesman who won emancipation for the Catholic Irish; then, to manifest the genuine core of its honest Irishness, let the long list of the lanes of Blackpool be written. Spring Lane, Walshe's Lane, Green Lane, Foster's Lane, Slattery's Lane, Wherland's Lane, Broad Lane, Narrow Lane, Sunday School Lane, Quarry Lane, Peacock Lane, Keller's Lane ". Long: Working Life; Balckpool; Austrailia Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Denis grew up in Blackpool. His father was a train driver. He worked for the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) but wanted to earn better money and went to Australia in the 1950s. He tells a funny story about visiting a rocket range and meeting someone who recognised him from Cork. He describes Blackpool as having been made up of numerous lanes and observes that its name derived from it being a boggy place full of streams. He comments that the River Lee is said to claim at least one life by drowning a year. There were two holy wells at Sunday’s Well; another called Lady’s Well at Leitrim Street. He talks briefly about Poulraddy Harbour, Micah’s Harbour, and Corkeran’s Quay. The latter two places had grand names but were insignificant. He sings a verse of a song about the latter called “The Cruise of the Mary Jane” and a song that a teacher made Denis remembers that there was an incident with a harbour ferry in the 1940s which lost its steering and caused great panic. He recalls the sports played in Cork, including bird-catching. Denis wrote a book called The Spirit of the Glen, about Glen Rovers GAA club. There was a flood in Blackpool in 1935, and he recounts a funny story about a boy floating by on a sofa. He remembers that a local man developed a way to generate his own electricity using water power. He was a teacher; under the system then, school monitors could become teachers without passing a teaching exam. And of course then like the old home, like, they believe in this month like, the Snap-Apple there, the Samhain, that the Almighty gives permission to the people to come to their house, that are gone. To visit their house that night. And again, like, some of the older women would light a plum candle, that night, and clean it, and have the house nice and clean. And there was no fear. I mean there wouldn’t be fear of anything like it was just done. S.H: Yeah. On the All Saints’ Eve, 31st of October? E. dB: Yeah. The candle would be lit, by them. S. H: What was the common name in Cork for that eve, was it All Saints’ Eve, or Hallowe’en or Snap-Apple Night? E. dB: Snap-Apple Night, sure when we were children it would be Snap-Apple Night, you know? S.H: There seems to have been some confusion. You know how All Souls’ Day is the 2nd of November, the feast following All Saints’. But in earlier times people sometimes referred to Hallowe’en as All Souls’ Night, is that right? E. dB: Well that only came with Christianity. The Church like were kind of crabbid like that, and you see, pre-Christian it was a big, big, big ceremony, with you know different things all the, you must remember, the apples are in, the harvest is in, the men are coming in, they won’t have to watch the shores for the Vikings with the storms and things, and you see like it was a big huge thing. But like the Church, they didn’t take it from us, the little magic. But they had to put “All Saints’ ” and they had to put “All Souls’ ” in it to diminish it a bit because you know, what we believed is, you know is, to hold us, to bring us into a different belief. So that would have been that. S. H: Yes. Did you ever hear it referred to as “All Souls’ Eve,” as well? E. dB: I did. Oh yes, “All Souls’, ” oh yeah? S. H: And people would know that you were meaning the 31st. of October, rather than the 1st of November? E. dB: Oh, they would, sure that’s the night, long ago then, we’d have to try and be home before 12 o’clock, we’d be frightened, you know now. You wouldn’t be out that night late. You see, on the streets. S. H: And did you hear of people making visits to graveyards around that time, pray for deceased relatives? E. dB: Oh, I did of course. There is an indulgence now, they say like, you know. I’ve been out now in Douglas there in the graveyard last week, I was doing a bit of work, and I be going around to Saint Finbarr's now, doing a little bit of work this week, please God, and I’ll call into Saint Finbarr's, we’re supposed, you know, to remember him and pray for him and they say like, you know, that time you could get out very easy, out of you know, if you were down, paying for your little wrongs, you could, you know, get a small bit... S. H: Yeah, a discount. E. dB: Yeah, it was a grand bit, yeah, that’s the idea, sure that’s what’s lovely. Indulgence. No fear or nothing, but, a thinking of those that are gone. Title A name given to the resource Eibhlís de Barra: Northside, Gender, Childhood Games Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Eibhlís was born on the Southside of Cork. Her husband was from Blarney Street, on the Northside. She recalls childhood games such as The Chaineys, and The Gobs, and Scaa, the latter two played with small stones. She quotes some of the skipping rhymes and remembers the rope games. Eibhlís comments on the value of the Irish language, and on English as spoken in Cork. She talks about home births, and about the process of dying at home, comparing it to sanitised hospital scenarios. Traditions of All Souls and All Saints Day. After marriage, it was traditional for the woman to live near her mother and grandmother; for the man to move to her area. She recalls the important role of women in families; men were left to their hobbies and remained peripheral. She talks about the importance of storytelling and tells a story about a clever man making a wish with a fairy. She muses on Irish history and concludes that the rich always betray the poor. She tells a story about two Scottish men who died fighting for Ireland at different times, one being ‘Colkitto’ [also known as Alasdair Mac Colla (d.1647)]. Eibhlís remembers Mardyke in her youth, says it was better then. There was a men’s part to the area, where men gathered to play cards. She talks about the rivalry between Northside and Southside and the sometimes violent rivalry between GAA clubs Barrs and The Glen (St Finbarr’s and Glen Rovers). There was a shop in Barrack Street where women could leave their children while they went to work. She describes people from the Northside as a distinct people, who were rogues but could be very nice. She speaks about the War Of Independence and Black And Tans drunken rampages during the curfews. She speaks of two brothers who were on opposite sides during the Irish Civil War where one shot the other. He says it was a special time. He says unlike the youth of today there was no throwing of eggs. He says his father would put an old ten pence piece into the apple, tie it to a string and then tie it to a lamp and swing it. They would take turns at attempting to take a bite from the apple to get the ten pence, he adds they were lucky they didn’t choke on it. He also says there was a game with an apple in a dish of water and he describes going from door to door dressed up. He says he always saw it as a triumph when they were given a few pence as that was what they really wanted. He says they would be out for two or three hours on Halloween night and they must have done the whole of Togher. He forgets the names of half the games but says snap apple was one. He says they used to have a great time with their parents and neighbours kids in the living room.Alan says there was a neighbour who along with two friends would go out as Wren Boys on Stephens Day. He says they would dress up as women and put on shawls and wear makeup to look like women. One of them had a bodhran and they would go from door to door banging the bodhran. Pat says also that he was serving as an altar boy at an ordination of a priest and he remembers on the way out seeing Bishop Lucey sitting down and he thought he didn’t look that severe a man. He also says that he had a voluptuous breakfast in front of him and Pat remembers thinking how he’d like to have some of that breakfast. Pat says there was a story told that during Lent Bishop Lucey said you couldn’t eat cakes during lent but you could eat a biscuit. Pat says a Cork firm brought out a cake that looked like a biscuit to get around this and they were nicknamed “Connie Dodgers”. Pat says he didn’t want to be moving out to another church to do the ordination mass and that he wanted to do it in the Cathedral. Pats father said how Bishop Lucey stood up to the Protestants on the Board Of Management Of The Savings Bank. Pat speaks of how a professor of moral theology in UCC at the time of Humanae Vitae made a statement that if anyone had any problems they could come to him and he would give them advice. Pat says when Bishop Lucey heard this he saw red and summoned him to the Bishops Palace. Pat says soon after Fr Paul went out to Africa. He says a time later Bishop Lucey went out to meet him. He says that Fr Good is still alive and living out in Douglas. He is supposed have said that the bishop that he knew here and the bishop out in Africa were two different people. Pat says according to Ger Cassidy (an older former neighbour) there was a sin of company keeping which would involve courting couples. I don’t know if he ever went out to see a film. I presume he did but that didn’t sort of light his fire at all really he had no particular, any interest in film, no particular interest in the theatre as such. Always remember that Fr O Flynn was exercising his ministry as a priest in the Loft and he was very subtly getting across the story of the gospels through the teaching of Christ through the plays of Shakespeare you know? That was his main thrust really so, yeah he certainly was in the 1930s well before I arrived they brought out a pamphlet for one of their shows about the evils of Jazz. They were very, very much opposed to jazz. He was anyway. I think he had convinced a lot of the guys up there at the time, and girls, that jazz, they kind of in a way that they were a little bit superior to that you know? That was, they regarded jazz as a little bit low class and I used to get that from Gus Healy you know who was very deeply involved from the inception of the Loft in 1924 up until he died in 1986 as Chairman of the Loft itself. He’d been Chairman actually since the time Fr O Flynn died in 1962 until he died himself in 86 so in all those years like he guided the Loft on a very steady course of development you know? And like the Loft in those days became a very popular place for aspiring actors, certainly during Fr O Flynn’s time of course and after the War, you know? A lot of young guys and girls that were interested in getting involved in theatre and it was kind of a thing to do at the time if you really wanted to put the stamp on your acting career it was nice to be able to say that you had spent some time in the Loft you know? And even for those who subsequently went on to become professional actors they would often refer to that like, that was where they learned their craft. Of Course, the whole thrust of Fr O Flynn and the Loft was to as he used to say himself constantly to educate the heart and the emotions that went with it. So he had no great interest in, you know, in new attitudes or anything like that that didn’t take that of acting, that didn’t take that into account. No interest in the technicalities of acting you know? That didn’t interest him. But what interested him was getting inside the emotional elements of the characters you played. And he was right because unless you do that your characters are going to come across rather stilted and wooden you know? But by really adopting the characters, kind of a method system really in a way with, I’m sure himself and Stanislavski would have had a great deal in common in that sense you know? But he wasn’t you know, open to any immorality or anything like that although open-minded in his own way. That so often say to them, the older guys when they were coming back on busses from performing and things like that you know, he used to say to them down the back of the bus, he’d be up in the front of the bus and he’d say “no keyhole romancing down there” you know? So like if you were, he didn’t mind you, you know having a bit of a romantic session with your girlfriend but provided you weren’t hiding it so in that sense he was a bit ahead of his time. Founded in 1924 by Fr Christopher O'Flynn. The theatre, up to the year 2000 was based out of the upper floor in Linehan's sweet factory John Redmond Street which is why it gained the moniker "The Loft". Since its inception, the group has put on a variety of Shakespeare's works in various theatres in the city including the Cork Opera House and the Everyman Theatre. All interviews in this collection were collected CFP researcher and ex Cork Shakespearean Company member David McCarthy. My mother had been one of the original children who Fr O’Flynn taught poetry, and… She was there at the very beginning as actually, as a very small child. She used to attend classes in the presbytery when she was aged only about 6 I think, and Fr. O’Flynn taught her poetry. Not Shakespeare, but Robert Louis Stevenson's Child's Garden of Verses. He had her saying poetry. And, and these classes in the presbytery, they were the very beginnings of The Loft. Fr. O’Flynn then found an old loft near Shandon and the classes moved into this premises, which ….my mother loved .And, she was in the week, the great week where they did eight different Shakespearean plays. She took part in that. And she also took part in a very famous production of The Midsummer’s Night Dream, which was held on the roof of The North Infirmary. And ….it was held for a private audience: the medical staff, and the nuns, and some clerics went and I think the bishop of Cork went. And my father…. attended it as a young boy, because his father was on the staff of The North Infirmary. So he was in the audience and he saw my mother play the part of ‘Puck’ in The Midsummer’s Night Dream and that was how my parent’s actually met. Was through Shakespeare, on the roof of The North Infirmary. So that’s quite a way to meet, it really is. DMC. And, and what year, what period was this? CD. My mother did ‘Puck’ when she was very young, so, she was born 1916 so…. I think she did Puck when she was about 12. Yes, she was very young, Puck. But, she always remembered that day, she said t'was one of the great days of her life, actually, playing ‘Puck’ on the roof of The North Infirmary. And, therefore when we were children she brought us up to meet Fr. O’Flynn because she adored Fr. O’Flynn and very much wanted us to, to be in the tradition of the loft, you know? She speaks about how her father was one of only six people in the city issued with a pass during the curfew at the time of the burning of Cork during the War Of Independence. She speaks about some of the local residents of the time such as Seamus Murphy the sculptor, tilly and Aloys Fleischmann and Joan Denise Moriarty. She speaks about her family’s long association with the medical profession and her own training and work as a surgeon. Title A name given to the resource Sheila Dalton: Family Life; Marriage; Childhood Subject The topic of the resource Life History; Description An account of the resource Sheila was born and raised on Gurranabraher Avenue. Her father was from the Fail hill area and her mother came from Whitechurch. Sheila was second youngest in a family of 7 girls and 4 boys. Her father worked in a government building as the lift operator. Sheila describes herself as her father's pet. Her father died when she was 9 years old, after which Sheila feared being put in the Good Shepherd. She describes her childhood clothing, how most of it came from her aunt in America and that they used to go to school in their bare feet. At school, all the children were treated the same no matter what there economic reality, all children were provided with Cocco and a bun in the morning. Sheila explains how she or her siblings never had toys growing up and mentions that she received her first toy at the age of 58 from her husband. She also mentions how a new frock would have been purchased for her communion but would have been taken to the pawnshop on the following Monday and never be seen again. Sheila states that this was quite a common practice at the time. Also, any money that was given to her for her communion by relatives and neighbours would have been taken off her by her mother. She notes how on an odd occasion she would get a slab of Cleeves toffee and that would last her three days. Teeth were cleaned by brushing with soot and salt which she says made her teeth clean and strong. Sheil then describes the games she played as a child and explains how they had a different game depending on what season it was. Sheila married at 19 to a carpenter. She describes married life and her job as a domestic servant for wealthy families in the city. She then goes on to describe pregnancy and childbirth in detail. Sheila finishes the interview by answering various questions comparing modern life to that of her youth.
