This hospital was know throughout Cork City as 'd'Orthopaedic'. The Memories of the Orthopaedic project focused on a cohort of nine interviewees who were associated with ‘the Orthopaedic’ as former staff (including medical and housekeeping), patients and locals who grew up near the hospital in Gurranabraher. The interviews, all but one of which were carried out by Joanne McNamara of the Health Services Executive, took place between April and September 2017. The project resulted in the publication of The Ministry of Healing, St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital Cork: An Oral and Historical Record (by Tomás MacConmara for the CFP), and elements from the interviews were incorporated into an open-air display linked to a Slí na Sláinte (Path to Health) walking route on the new campus. The project was celebrated and the book launched on 12 April 2018 at the CFP Outreach Hub. It was run by Ann and her husband john who lived upstairs with their family. She recalls moving from the Marsh about 65 years ago to a brand new house. She remembers they were never allowed near the Orthopaedic “the fear of God was put into them about the Orthopaedic”. She recalls there was a little house outside the gate and there would be a light on at night and it would be the only light you would see around the whole of the Orthopaedic. She says “she doesn’t know where they got the idea they were in there chopping legs and hands off. That’s what you went in there for, you went in there, you lost something, a hand or a leg, some part. It was very quiet hospital, you’d hardly see anyone going in or out there. Mostly people came from the country and they would come up on the bus and it would be a day out for them to see their person in there. Thank God we never had to go in there to see anybody for years and years” CFP NOTE The Marsh is an area in cork also known as the middle Parish. She says it was “curiosity that drew them up towards the house and they would get up a bit of the way and you were hunted back down. A man would come out and hunt us away from the Orthopaedic. She clarifies the house at entrance was the Gate lodge of the Orthopaedic. The Interviewer ask about the walk up to the hospital from Bakers road which didn’t exist at that time Breda says she used to venture up towards the hospital when she was about 6 or 7. There was nothing except the shop up in the area. The credit union that is there now on Bakers road used to be in the basement of Gurranabraher church for years. She does remember one occasion when a neighbour ended up in the Orthopaedic with a few broken bones. When she heard she said “O my God, He’s down that hospital” Breda says she had never been in there but she had to go down to see him because he was a neighbour and had no one belong to him. Breda recalls going into the hospital “with the fright of God in her and she couldn’t even sit down because she was so nervous, but he seemed ok and it seemed a normal hospital. It wasn’t like what they had made it out to be”. Breda’s neighbour got on fine there and the visit had gotten rid of a bit of fear. She says she went out the gate “on air”. It was known to be used as a fever hospital or for polio patients. Breda says she always knew that the fever hospital was in Blackpool in Leitrim St. Her mother talked about it for years. Breda says her and her brother were both in the fever hospital because they picked up scarlet fever. She says it wasn’t too dangerous when she got it but her mother’s sister died aged 21 from scarlet fever because they didn’t have any cures at the time. Breda she was in the fever hospital when she was 3 or 4 and her brother was only 11 months older than her. Breda says her mother always talked about having to go down to the fever hospital and having to walk up the long steps leading up to it. She says she never thought the Orthopaedic had anything to do with fever hospital. She got a new house in Harbour View Road in Knocknaheeny. It was surrounded by fields. “You would get up in the mornings and open the curtains and there would see a cow, so the kids were all excited about that” There was such a demand for houses they rushed people in. the pathways were not even finished. Breda says she didn’t mind waiting for a footpath or gate or railings. She was delighted to have the house. The new house was at the back of the Orthopaedic. The back of the house was the wall of the orthopaedic Breda says when her children were growing up “she still had the fear of the orthopaedic and brought it with her” and maybe gave it to her children as well. When she was getting them off their dummies (children’s soothers) she used to say the dummies had gone over the wall into the Orthopaedic and none of her children used to go near the wall. She says it became a very busy and open hospital. It changed from that “Haunted place” they thought it was. People started getting jobs there, in the kitchen, the laundry. It gave employment to the Northside which was very badly needed, Breda says, because it was it was very poor up there. She says there was talk about it closing down which was terrible in her opinion. She says there was protests and people were going mad. A lot of the workers lived in Churchfield. Farranree, Templeacre and Bakers road. There would be a lot of families without wages. Breda says it was the start of a lot of things shutting down on the Northside. “It was in people’s minds that they were shutting down everything. It went from the Orthopaedic to the North Infirmary which was down the road and the dental that was across the road from the North Infirmary was all shut down. There were starting to shut down things on the Northside of the city. That was horrible” The interviewer asks Breda about the sense of loss of the after the Orthopaedic was closed down and Breda replies that it is a brilliant building and that it is being used for community purposes for doctors and an A&E. She says that it should be used as a hospital because they took the North Infirmary and the Orthopaedic, there should be something for the Northside even if it was only an ambulance bay. Breda says the urgent care centre that is there now is fabulous but it will take time for people to get used to it Breda is asked do people still feel that something was taken away from them with the loss of the hospital and no matter what is there people will still feel they should have a hospital. She says there will be community involvement. Doctors will be moving in and not much else except that the dental will be there and it will be great when it gets up and running. She says people miss the hospital. “There is a huge lot of land there, they could have had a hospital, they could have had the health care service, they could have had the dental, they could have had a lot up here. They take one thing and give another. But I think people still feel that we were robbed”. Breda thinks the new development will be fabulous but will be mainly for younger families, where the older people will think they took our Orthopaedic. The interviewer informs Breda about new services going into the site, GP practices, Dental etc. and asks her if it will change their feeling about the Orthopaedic. Breda says “they probably will when it all start happening but you can’t blame people either, all down through the years things were taken and shut down and lost jobs and all of that and people won’t see all this till it’s up and running and its happening. It’s hard to put belief into people… There will probably be great benefit for people”. Breda recalls going into the Orthopaedic after she had an operation to get her dressing changed. It saved here having to go into town. Breda says access is another important factor, there should be pedestrian access from the Knocknaheeny side. Two different access roads that they were promised are now not happening. It leaves only one access road into the Orthopaedic and after putting all that money into it people probably won’t come down. Breda believes the planners are responsible and that another information session should happen and it could be advertised at mass because churches are starting to fill up again and people that hear it could go and spread it around the community. Breda says people don’t look at notice boards or buy papers anymore because of all the negative stuff on them. She also says put a leaflet into every house and give information that way. Also a credit union should put a leaflet into your deposit book. Breda feels there are positive things happening there, but she had heard “Doubting Thomas’s” (sceptical people) saying that will never finish they will run out of money. She says “you have that in the Northside because of stuff being taken from people. Title A name given to the resource Breda McShane: Orthopaedic Hospital Subject The topic of the resource Ireland; Cork; Gurranabraher; Healthcare; Occupational Lore: Description An account of the resource Breda grew up in Dungarvan Co. Waterford. She moved to Cork in 1975 after getting a job as a clerical worker for the Southern Health Board. Breda moved to Hollyhill in 1980. Six years later she got a transfer to the Orthopedic hospital payroll department. She talks briefly about the matron Maura O'Connell and her deputies. She mentions that the attendants being very friendly, great on a night out and brilliant singers. Breda describes the record keeping at the hospital. She also talks about the wages and the process of paying staff Breda also describes the layout of the hospital campus and speaks of the strange numbering system on the buildings. While she describes the campus as a peaceful place she does tell a story of young people picking magic mushrooms and getting chased off. She says that it wasn't greatly suited for postoperative hip replacement patients due to the steps at the entrance to all the buildings. Breda tells of a man who told her that there is a system of tunnels under the grounds. Breda then explains the love of horses that some of her colleagues had. This hospital was know throughout Cork City as 'd'Orthopaedic'. The Memories of the Orthopaedic project focused on a cohort of nine interviewees who were associated with ‘the Orthopaedic’ as former staff (including medical and housekeeping), patients and locals who grew up near the hospital in Gurranabraher. The interviews, all but one of which were carried out by Joanne McNamara of the Health Services Executive, took place between April and September 2017. The project resulted in the publication of The Ministry of Healing, St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital Cork: An Oral and Historical Record (by Tomás MacConmara for the CFP), and elements from the interviews were incorporated into an open-air display linked to a Slí na Sláinte (Path to Health) walking route on the new campus. The project was celebrated and the book launched on 12 April 2018 at the CFP Outreach Hub. The CFP and the HSE subsequently entered into a two-year partnership, the 'Oral History for Health' project that carries out oral history in health care contexts (2019-2020), the first strand of which is the HSE Grattan Street Stories project. Title A name given to the resource Maura O’Connell: Orthopaedic Hospital, Working Life, Healthcare Subject The topic of the resource Ireland; Cork; Gurranabraher; Healthcare; Occupational Lore: Description An account of the resource Maura was matron of the Orthopaedic Hospital for 20 years until her retirement in 1997. In this interview Maura recalls the various roles she had in the hospital prior to her being appointed matron. Maura recalls that the nurses residents on the grounds of the hospital and comment that it was very upmarket for its day. Maura then talks about the first hip operation that took place in the hospital, that of a young woman who was 'delighted to be able to wear Cuban heeled shoes'. She then focuses on her time as matron, where she was responsible for around 200 nursing staff. Maura thinks she would hate working today due to inadequate staffing numbers. Maura than reminisces about past patients, like the children who were severely disabled from contracting Polio. She also mentions the likes of Joe Mac and The Dixies coming in on Christmas day to to entertain the staff and patients. Maura then describes the layout of the hospital and the campus. Title A name given to the resource Mary O'Sullivan: Orthopaedic Hospital, Working Life, Kitchen Staff Subject The topic of the resource Ireland; Cork; Gurranabraher; Healthcare; Occupational Lore: Description An account of the resource Mary worked in the hospital kitchen for 35 years from 1973. She describes the type of work that the kitchen staff had to preform, from cooking in the kitchen to scrubbing the walls in the corridors. Mary says there there would be 7 staff on per shift. The kitchen had separate menus for the staff and the patients. The kitchen staff worked from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, this meant that every three weeks the staff would get a day off for withe extra hours worked. Mary explains that she would not have got the job in 1973 had she not accepted to live on the campus. Then she would go home to her parents on her days off. She describes her training in the College of Commerce as a cook. Mary has fond memories of her time in the hospital, even though tensions could boil over in the kitchen there was good comradery between the staff. She describes how some patients might request a special meal which the kitchen would oblige. Mary describe the social aspect of work. They would go for drinks in the Cottonball or 'the Josh'( The Joshua Tree). The social club was very important. She also, mentions the lotto syndicate where they got five numbers and got fifty euro each. Mary describes Christmas time in the hospital, that in later years all the patients where brought to one building. And making sure the residence of Grove House got a nice homely cooking. Mary explains the communal element of the Orthopaedic Hospital compared to the other hospitals in the city. As a local Mary liked the hospital being in her community and used to take leisurely walks. And she is also excited about the new development of the campus. She then talks about Bill Twomey who was the gate keeper and lived in the gate lodge of the hospital. This hospital was know throughout Cork City as 'd'Orthopaedic'. The Memories of the Orthopaedic project focused on a cohort of nine interviewees who were associated with ‘the Orthopaedic’ as former staff (including medical and housekeeping), patients and locals who grew up near the hospital in Gurranabraher. The interviews, all but one of which were carried out by Joanne McNamara of the Health Services Executive, took place between April and September 2017. The project resulted in the publication of The Ministry of Healing, St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital Cork: An Oral and Historical Record (by Tomás MacConmara for the CFP), and elements from the interviews were incorporated into an open-air display linked to a Slí na Sláinte (Path to Health) walking route on the new campus. The project was celebrated and the book launched on 12 April 2018 at the CFP Outreach Hub. The CFP and the HSE subsequently entered into a two-year partnership, the 'Oral History for Health' project that carries out oral history in health care contexts (2019-2020), the first strand of which is the HSE Grattan Street Stories project. Title A name given to the resource Dr. John Curtin: Orthopaedic Hospital, Working Life, Healthcare Subject The topic of the resource Ireland; Cork; Gurranabraher; Healthcare; Occupational Lore: Description An account of the resource John, worked at St Mary's Hospital from 1972 to 2003 when he took early retirement. Initially he worked as an orthopaedic register but from 1978 he was consultant. He remembers thinking St. Mary’s was a very progressive hospital but the layout wasn’t suitable for the time because it was built with a small budget in 1938. He says foundations were built for 9 separate blocks for different stages on infectious diseases. John tells us how in 1949 changes began that would result in the hospital becoming an orthopaedic hospital. He says that the hospital brought in many polio sufferers after an outbreak in 1956. Similarly, John says, the hospital was very relevant when tuberculosis was more abundant. John says that the staff were highly trained and recounts more of the history of the hospital circa 1955. John recounts his busy weekly work routine between a number of hospitals including St. Mary’s, St. Finbars, St. Catherines Hospital (in Tralee), Edenburn (outside of Tralee). John recounts his daily routine which varied from day to day including: surgeries, ward rounds, clinics, discharges and paperwork. He recalls in the mid 1980s there being a major financial crisis and how their budget was cut substantially. John tells us that a senior surgeon retired and wasn’t replaced for 8 years which made things very difficult. John remembers Grove House when it was a home for nurses who would live there during their working week and go home for their days off. John recalls that the grounds were very well maintained by a full time gardener who would come to work in his horse and cart and would leave it to the rear of the administration block. John remembers various orthopaedic clubs from England and Scotland who would come to visit, and similarly who they would visit over the years. He says these links were as a result of the training they would have to do in England to get fully qualified. John recalls major cutbacks around 1993 and says that 300 patients were sent by helicopter to Belfast for surgery. He says that this would have been very expensive. John says that at that stage they were in the process of building a new operating theatre and that 1.6million was set aside to tackle waiting lists. He remembers that tenders were sent out and that the lowest tender came from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Title A name given to the resource Peter Sargent: Orthopaedic Hospital, Working Life, Healthcare Subject The topic of the resource Ireland; Cork; Gurranabraher; Healthcare; Occupational Lore: Description An account of the resource Peter moved to Cork in his early twenties when he had got a job as a typewriter mechanic. The job involved a lot of travel which did not suit him once he got married. Peter left this job for a position at St Mary's Hospital as a theatre attendant. After a few years in this role, Peter successfully applied for the role of anaesthetic technician. He didn’t administer anaesthetic but he set it up what the consultants would use. He would also set up the patient when they arrived and get them ready and then the nurses would arrive. They were all female nurses. He mentions that the sister frowned on male nurses. Peter talks of the hierarchy in the hospital and that certain staff could not talk to senior consultants. He tells a story of being reprimanded for calling a nurse by her first name. Peter then talks about union activity at the hospital. He mentions that Gerry O’Sullivan who was the cook at the hospital was the shop steward and that Joe O’Callaghan (later became Lord Mayor of Cork) would handle more serious cases. He recalls the social aspect of the job and mention the bars that they would frequent. Peter kept up with a lot of his collegues after retirement. This hospital was know throughout Cork City as 'd'Orthopaedic'. The Memories of the Orthopaedic project focused on a cohort of nine interviewees who were associated with ‘the Orthopaedic’ as former staff (including medical and housekeeping), patients and locals who grew up near the hospital in Gurranabraher. The interviews, all but one of which were carried out by Joanne McNamara of the Health Services Executive, took place between April and September 2017. The project resulted in the publication of The Ministry of Healing, St Mary’s Orthopaedic Hospital Cork: An Oral and Historical Record (by Tomás MacConmara for the CFP), and elements from the interviews were incorporated into an open-air display linked to a Slí na Sláinte (Path to Health) walking route on the new campus. The project was celebrated and the book launched on 12 April 2018 at the CFP Outreach Hub. The CFP and the HSE subsequently entered into a two-year partnership, the 'Oral History for Health' project that carries out oral history in health care contexts (2019-2020), the first strand of which is the HSE Grattan Street Stories project. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com The womens prison which is in Sundays Well and to the west of the Good Sheppard Convent, em, again very, very clear childhood memories of walking there from Ballyphehane, walking as far as Jail Cross and ironically passing the old county jail which is the building at the western side of UCC campus now or the Jail Cross side of it, em, always fascinated by the fact that it was closed and while one could go up the steps to the two storey building eh in the centre of the wall at the front and been able to look in and see so far into the yard and yet been aware of so much space behind it and the building itself never really getting I don’t remember getting a clear view of the building. But my mother had great devotion to a little girl who died very young known as little Nellie of Holy God and she would part of our visits over into that direction, our walks over would be to pray at her grave, em, I was always drawn by the high walls of the prison and wondering what was in there or how would I get in. Years later a chance came in my teens when myself and a friend happened to be walking up that way during the summer holidays from school. Now to the left of the steps up to the main building at the centre of the front wall eh there was an archway and two metal gates, now I had known for instance that 2RN which was the Cork Broadcasting Radio Eireann back in I think started in the late 1920s called RTE or 2RN as it was called broadcast locally from there for a couple of years and the PNT were using the front section of the yard as a depo as well, but the gates were open and this was my first time been able to see in and there was a truck entering so curiosity getting the better of us, the truck drove in, we hesitated a few seconds and then ran in to have a quick look around but thinking we had a bit of time to spare we went in around the yard and went in a good distance from the gate when the next thing we heard one of the gates closing, turning around and between the urge to get out and not be seen we froze for a moment, totally undecided on what to do but thankfully the men that were after parking the truck had to go back into an office and we legged it out of there like sprinters. Em the building as far as I know, the design of the building is similar to I think what would have been built in the famous Dartmoor prison in England at the time, and its interesting because I was on holidays in Devon last year and there’s a big debate because I think its going to close as a prison and there is a big debate in Devon as to what, could even be a national debate really, as to what to do with the building but to the best of my knowledge there was a kind of a standard blueprint for prisons built I think, I think that was opened in 1820 around the same time as the old county jail over at Jail Cross at UCC. Em and I’m not sure about that one because it is demolished now but I think the building in, in the Cork Prison, or the old women’s prison would be a similar design to the one at Dartmoor. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com I want to talk about Collins Barracks which is very close to the top of Patrick’s Hill and opposite the entrance to Collins Barracks is the entrance into the camp field of the, of the Barracks and the, this was a great amenity for the local people around Audley Place, Richmond Hill place, Suttons buildings and places and you know the army kindly allowed people over the decades to go in there and walk there animals and use them as a local private park nearly, and within the grounds of Collins Barracks of the camp field as it was known, there was a big green area there, I used to do three runs of it at one stage with a lovely big collie who is no longer with us now, but he was a bit, he was a wonderful dog and he, he loved his chase like sometimes he you know if anybody was moving he would love to run after them a little bit, oh he wouldn’t do anything to anybody but he was a wonderful, but it was a wonderful place to let him loose like, and the army kindly allowed all the locals and there was nearly a confraternity of people that knew one another, all bringing there animals at different times up there, and of course then there was a tennis club, club up there in earlier years and the pitch and putt club is still active and then the officers houses but it was, were within the camp field, and like all you had do was to wave over to the whoever was in duty at the front of Collins Barracks and they’ll allow you in like, there you know. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com Well, when I joined the college, we were told, that we could, this was a completely different system now, it was the ATHC, there are about fourteen different exams you had to do, we were told as part of our initiation, you know as students, that we could go into any class at any level, so the classes were being run on first year, second year, third year, fourth year level, and we could go into any class we wanted to go into, [pause] I went out in the first group because my name is ‘C’, and when I was out there I just said, I am not going back to my own class actually I am just going to stay out here and advance life drawing and all this sort of stuff, I said they will come and get me and give out to me [cough], you know, and I will just wait for that to happen but they actually never did. That’s the kind of place it was like, it was amazing. But my very first lesson, was antique drawing, and the college then, see the school, as it existed then, was really a 19th Century structure in all its aspects practically, in terms of the structure of teaching, well that’s not, that’s not fair on my extraordinary tutors actually, but the kind of educational structure that was there, was kind of 19th Century. Em actually the, the hotel itself was built at the rear of the building, the entrance was on Pembroke Street. The restaurant is there now today, the entrance -- but that would have been the entrance to the hotel and that didn’t open until maybe about five years I think after em, [clock strikes] five years after the Commerical Buildings itself so twas the eh -- twas part of the Commercial Buildings, the main entrance was on Pembroke Street but you could -- you could also go through em the South Mall entrance through the Commercial Rooms into it. And actually when you go into the [unintelligible voices in background 08:35] South Mall today you’ll see there’s a plaque, a circular plaque on the, on the floor mosaic, kind of a plaque with a Cork coat of arms and it has ‘The Commercial Buildings’ written around it you know. Em so as I said it wasn’t really then until oh -- I think twas into the 1940s by the time the Commercial Buildings actually moved out of the front so twas that long before the hotel took over actually the front part of, of the South Mall eh, that building there you know. Title A name given to the resource Roger Herlihy: Imperial Hotel, South Mall, Commercial Buildings Subject The topic of the resource Built Heritage: Description An account of the resource Roger talks about the Imperial Hotel, South Mall, formerly the Commercial Buildings and the famous people who attended the hotel. He explains that South Mall used to be a channel of the River Lee and that is why some buildings on the street have steps going up to their front doors. He tells a story about hotel manager Charles MacDowell. He talks about Franz Liszt’s visit to Cork in 1840, and his playing at Hallaran’s asylum. Slavery abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke at the hotel and there is a plague there dedicated to him. Artist John Banvard demonstrated a long painted panorama known as The Three Mile Picture. Other visitors to Cork included Charles Dickens, midget Tom Thumb, and courtesan Lola Montez. The hotel was also occupied by anti-Fenian forces, and later by pro-Treaty commander Michael Collins. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com This was Unitarianism, was illegal up until the early part of the 19th Century in fact it was punishable by death to espouse Unitarian points of view, and understandably Unitarians would of kept their heads low and so and so this church evolved as a liberal Presbyterian church with the lifting of the prohibition on Unitarianism, Unitarian ideas, in the, I think it was 1817. Unitarianism grew as a more identifiable part of the church and this gave rise to friction, and basically there was a schism between the Unitarians who believed in the oneness of God and the Trinitarians who believed in the doctrine of the trinity and that split resulted in eventually Reverent Faris congregation going up, and they eventually built the trinity church and that is how that arose but he is quiet right, the Presbyterians and Unitarians worship here for many, many decades. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com I did a project about six years ago on the Jewish community in Cork and it was a subject that was very close to my heart because my maternal grandparents lived in 31 Geraldine Place in the heart of what the local people affectionately call Jew Town. As David Marcus said in his autobiography Buried Memories, no cartographer actually has it listed as Jew Town on a map of Cork but it’s a distinct place known to everybody just like Ballyphehane or Blackpool or anywhere like that and very close to my heart so I began writing about the Jewish community up at the Folklore Project. I focused in on the history of the Jewish people and their presence in Cork City and some prominent members of the Jewish community who contributed so much so much to Cork life because the Jewish community in academic, economic, social, political circles contributed greatly to the fabric of Cork life and society and also a little bit about their history as they dispersed after the War from Cork. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com My familiarity with Fota House is really more to do with Fota gardens, I did a course there, on the history of Irish Gardens and I also became familiar with the frameyard garden, the frameyard was really part of the production garden, so what people forget about country houses, is that the house and the garden were one entity, they were not separate entities, the garden provided the fruit and vegetables for the family and for some of the staff, and the garden also provided, a supply of flowers in bloom for every month of the summer, essentially. Now it was the head gardeners job to provide army after army of flowers in bloom, also to provide, soft fruit, for the desert section of the families dinners and for the guests, so the house and the garden really were two sides of the same coin, now when we think, of gardens and gardeners, we have an image of some guy raking up leaves in a field, the gardener in a country house had the most important position, aside from that of the butler or the leader of the household staff. Now the gardener, occupied quite an unusual position because to be the head gardener was to occupy a fairly elevated social position, it was a way, in which young men, usually who would have started as gardeners boys and then became foreman, journeymen, foreman, and then head gardeners, it was a way for them to elevate their social position but really to be head gardener was to be a very important person, because you liaised with the master of the house particularly in the Victorian period, the leaders of aristocratic families competed with each other in raising exotic plants and flowers and the head gardener worked quite closely with the head of the household to achieve success with garden specimens, very often these were quite exotic and the reason they had exotic plants and flowers, was because Ireland was then nominally part of the British Empire and Irish and British plant hunters went out and brought back seeds and specimens, which people then competed to bring to bloom, or to bring to, bring to success. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com Well this is the drawing room and this was one of the worstly effected building or rooms in the building because as you can see there was partial collapse of the ceiling here, and behind all this, I don’t know if the possibly, don’t know the construction of lath plaster ceilings, basically, even though, this area here was the area that had fallen, the whole rest of the ceiling was very weak at that point as well, because the way that the base of the ceiling would be first put in place is you get your joists crossing the entire ceiling and on top of that, I put laths and laths of timber that would perhaps be about one inch in thickness, they vary, they don’t have to be very particular, and there then nailed, from this side of the room, and so if you can imagine these are spread out then at intervals, maybe of half an inch and from this side the plaster is pushed up into the laths and as the plaster ceases the laths and as the plaster is pushed up this is a piece of plaster now it falls up and curls over and forms a little ‘U’, which is known as a nib, and quiet often in old buildings like that, the nibs actually break, they break at the line of the lath, so this whole, this whole building, this whole ceiling was very, very, weak. So even though this is the area that looked damaged the entire thing had to be from the other side the floor boards lifted and all the nibs prepared. This had fallen in one piece but as it hit the floor it smashed considerably so. If you wish to access further archival material please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com I think probably the most distinctive thing about Quakerism is that it is based on the premise that everybody is equal. Religion really equal and that we don’t need any kind of intermediary between us and God or the Spirit and, for that reason, back when Quakerism came into being in the 17th Century they decided they didn’t need priests or Ministers or any kind of Pastor and, essentially, the whole structures of how Quakers do things are based on the idea that we can have that direct contact. So the appearance of a Quaker meeting on a Sunday morning, Quaker meeting houses are very different than what most people are used to in terms of churches or temples or synagogues or whatever. The building will be very simple, very little adornment and there’s no programme at all. There’s nobody leading the service. We just sit in silence for about, mostly silent for about an hour. Occasionally somebody may get up and say something that they feel moved to say and, in principle, we believe that sometimes when this happens that person is actually moved to say something by the spirit of God and so, in some sense, they are acting as the Minister of the meeting during the time that they get up and speak. So that’s what a Quaker meeting is like. That’s the form of worship that Quakers use, mostly silence with a bit of sort of inspired ministry from a number of people during the course of about an hour. All the work that would normally be done by paid clergy or priests or Ministers is done by committees essentially, by officers who are appointed for a few years and then they may step down and somebody else will be appointed to do the job. It was carried out between November 2015 and April 2017 and documents the experiences of stonemasons based in Cork throughout the twentieth century. The collection explores the occupational and social context of stonemasonry; work practices, the social context, occupational lore, the secret language Bearlager na Saor and family ties. Most of the interviews are focused on the mid to late twentieth century with some stories and histories dating back to the eighteenth century This project’s second interviewee, Jim Fahy of the Cork Mason’s Historical Society, was inspired to include an oral history element to his ongoing research and documentation of stonemasonry, and this material is being accessioned to the CFP. Michael Moore characterized the project as an attempt to capture a snapshot of the lives and voices of stonemasons and ‘to record their insular world for posterity’, pointing out that ‘There is a need to document the living tradition of stonemasonry by recording people who work or have worked in masonry, particularly those born into it as part of familial ties.’ (Moore, 2016: 8). He describes the tradition of families passing on trades through the generations and the difficulties facing anyone seeking to enter the trades without a family lineage. If you wish to access further archival material for this interview or other interviews please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com JF The thing about it is now I’m the last of my family as a mason, once I die there’ll be no one to take it up after me and that’ll be the end of my family’s time in the masons trade which goes back generations, and it’s sad thing really at the end of the day like because I would have loved my 2 sons like 1 of em even to take it up but they had no interest in it like, and I feel like as if you know and that’s the reason I’m so hooked up with historical side of things now is that what’s there I’m trying to preserve it and not only that I want to promote it as well, so like that’s the reason I’m so involved in it now and getting the banner restored now and things like that you know. It’s really important and not only that I’ve managed to save a lot of the records of the plumbers, the carpenters, the electricians, all these things were left in bags inside in carpenters hall, just abandoned and left there and the next thing for the them you know yourself a black plastic bag the next thing that was going to happen to that was it was going out in a skip. Title A name given to the resource Jim Fahy: Masonry, Apprenticeships, Emigration Subject The topic of the resource Stonemasons: Occupational Lore: Description An account of the resource Jim Fahy is a stonemason who was interviewed in 2015 by Michael Moore from the Cork Folklore Project, also a stonemason. Jim Fahy comes from several generations of stonemasons on both sides of his family. He describes the ‘closed trade’ system, which would have given him entrance into the profession due to his family lineage. When the system ‘opened’ he was required to do formal training despite the fact that the mason’s traditional rule gave him the right to enter without formal training, through apprenticeship. He started his apprenticeship or training in 1975. He vividly describes the hard working conditions and the skill of the stonemason. He describes the union customs such as ‘paying their script’ and being brought to ‘the green table’ in the mid-1970s until the Recession in 1981. He laments the current state of the profession and fears that properly trained tradesmen will soon become extinct. Most of the interviews are focused on the mid to late twentieth century with some stories and histories dating back to the eighteenth century This project’s second interviewee, Jim Fahy of the Cork Mason’s Historical Society, was inspired to include an oral history element to his ongoing research and documentation of stonemasonry, and this material is being accessioned to the CFP. Michael Moore characterized the project as an attempt to capture a snapshot of the lives and voices of stonemasons and ‘to record their insular world for posterity’, pointing out that ‘There is a need to document the living tradition of stonemasonry by recording people who work or have worked in masonry, particularly those born into it as part of familial ties.’ (Moore, 2016: 8). If you wish to access further archival material for this interview or other interviews please contact CFP, folklorearchive@gmail.com JF You’d see people saying, he’s stone mad that fella, but how that name came was, that came from the old masons, the old stonemasons because they’d be working on a stone wall right, and then they’d, when you do stone work, you’d have to stand back from it and look at it and you’d see, oh I have to cover that there, that’s not running right there that joint is going to high or you know that stone now, I don’t think that stone is good enough there, and you’d have to stand back from your work and then he said, you could be dressing a stone, and you could be dressing it for five minutes, now they dressed all the stone by hand, the stone today is all guillotined [Cut square by a machine] there’s no art in it today as such, like there’s still art in it because anytime I handle a guillotine stone now, I still put the chisel to it, even though it’s square enough and the face is good enough, I still put the chisel to it, just to give it the chisel marks, to let people know that you’re after going at it, that you’re not just after putting it in like cladding on a wall, you know, and that’s what I do with it, but as I say MM Put your touch on it JF Yeah, I always put a touch on it, I’ll always touch it, and I’ll tell the young fellas I’m showing, you touch that, always touch it, just don’t stick it in, anybody can stick it in like that, you touch it and do a nice job on it and take pride in what you do Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
