On February 10, 2024, the Cork Folklore Project hosted an engaging event at Triskel Christchurch, in partnership with the Environmental Research Institute and the Cork Traveller Women’s Network. Lord Mayor Kieran McCarthy launched the event to an enthusiastic audience of approximately 200 attendees, including members of the general public, sustainability groups, families, and representatives from the Travelling Community.
The event was facilitated by the Circular Tales team of Dr Clíona O’Carroll and James Furey. Throughout the day, the audience was treated to a series of songs, stories, and panel discussions that celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Travellers while emphasizing sustainable practices through recorded oral testimonies. Notable speakers included renowned Traveller singer and storyteller Thomas McCarthy, whose performances captivated the audience; furniture historian Claudia Kinmonth, who shed light on the historical significance of reused materials; Traveller advocate Mag O’Sullivan, who shared insights on contemporary issues facing the community; and Paul Bolger, Manager of the Environmental Research Institute, who discussed the importance of integrating traditional knowledge into modern sustainability efforts.
The event fostered a sense of community and shared learning, inspiring attendees to reflect on the significance of cultural heritage in promoting sustainable living practices. Overall, it was a successful gathering that not only celebrated the past but also paved the way for a more sustainable future.
